You can stream a prerecorded video on repeat from a Linux mini PC by sending it to YouTube Live through OBS Studio or FFmpeg. YouTube receives an encoder feed; it does not loop a video from a playlist for you. Set up the media loop and stream settings, test the full playback cycle, and treat “headless” as remote administration—not proof that OBS can run without a graphical session.
Before you set up the mini PC
- Check YouTube eligibility: Your channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility and encoder setup.
- Choose the stream format: Decide the video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and visibility (for example, unlisted while testing). Use media you have the rights to stream, including permission for continuous looping and monetization if applicable. A license to use a track or video does not automatically establish those permissions.
- Check the computer and network: OBS requires OpenGL 3.3 or later on Linux. Confirm your distribution, graphics driver, encoder availability, cooling, and sustained upload capacity on the actual machine; the OpenGL requirement alone does not establish that a mini PC can encode your chosen stream reliably. Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, set its title and visibility, and choose the stream configuration you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the encoder settings. Enter them in OBS or FFmpeg as appropriate. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.”
- Keep Live Control Room open during testing so you can check its preview and stream health.
Set up a looping video in OBS Studio
OBS is the more visual option: it lets you build a scene with a media source and can be easier to manage if you need overlays or multiple scene elements. Install it using the official Linux guidance, then configure the scene and media source graphically.

- Create a scene in OBS and add a Media Source.
- Select the local video or audio file and enable Loop. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Set playback-end and restart behavior to suit the scene. Check Show nothing when playback ends if you do not want the last frame to remain visible when the source stops. Test the transition at the end of the file and into the next loop.
- Check the audio meter and listen to the stream preview. Confirm that audio is present, at a suitable level, and not unintentionally silent or distorted.
Configure YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder streaming, CBR (constant bitrate), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use only a codec your installed OBS build and hardware actually support. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a performance guarantee for your mini PC. The guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Start at a format your hardware can sustain, then check YouTube’s current table for the matching codec and frame rate before choosing a bitrate.

Set the OBS stream service to YouTube, select RTMPS if available, and enter the server URL and key copied from Live Control Room. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where those controls are exposed. Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends 20% spare bandwidth and says to account for both primary and backup streams when applicable. See YouTube’s streaming tips. Measure sustained upload capacity under realistic conditions rather than relying on a brief peak speed test.
Start the stream and verify a complete loop
- For the first test, use unlisted or private visibility where that fits your channel and workflow.
- Start streaming in OBS and check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators. Confirm the correct video, audio, and stream metadata appear.
- Wait for the media to reach its end and begin again. Make sure the source does not disappear, pause, or leave an unintended blank scene at the loop point.
- Test with representative movement and audio, not just a static frame. Monitor the stream health while the mini PC runs at the intended settings.
- Before relying on the setup unattended, test what happens after a network interruption, power loss, and encoder restart. YouTube’s documentation here does not guarantee that OBS will automatically reconnect or that a broadcast will resume without operator action.
What “headless” means for OBS
OBS offers launch parameters including --startstreaming, --profile, --collection, and --scene; see the OBS launch parameters. After configuring and testing a profile and scene, an operator can use the startup flag in automation. That documents a way to request streaming at launch, not a complete headless-service recipe.

The official materials do not establish that every Linux OBS build works without a display server or graphical session, or that a particular system service or virtual display arrangement will be sufficient. If the mini PC is remotely administered, confirm the selected build’s graphical-session requirements and test startup and recovery on that machine before leaving it unattended.
Command-line alternative: loop the input with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a possible non-GUI path for a fixed media file. Its -stream_loop -1 input option repeats an input indefinitely; see the FFmpeg documentation. It does not by itself produce a universally suitable YouTube command: the right output settings depend on the file’s video and audio codecs, whether it contains audio, your target bitrate, available hardware encoding, and the YouTube endpoint.

Build and test the command for the actual file and FFmpeg build, and verify the stream in Live Control Room before using it unattended. If you stream-copy, the source codecs and timing must be suitable for the output; if you re-encode, confirm that the CPU or supported hardware encoder can sustain the chosen settings. Keep the stream key out of shell history, shared scripts, and process listings where practical. No single command can be assumed to work for every media file and Linux installation.
RTMPS or HLS?
For the ordinary encoder workflow described here, use RTMPS if your encoder offers it. HLS is not simply a more convenient way to loop a local file: YouTube’s HLS workflow uses HTTPS, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments, and POST/PUT requests. It also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Use HLS only when its supported codec or workflow is needed; consult YouTube’s encoder settings and HLS ingest requirements.

Troubleshooting
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies within the past 90 days; review eligibility in YouTube Studio.
- Live Control Room does not show a feed: Recheck the selected stream, server URL, and key. Ensure the encoder is actually streaming and that the key corresponds to the intended event. Reset an exposed key.
- The preview buffers or health is poor: Reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the encoder and connection can sustain. Check sustained upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, including a backup stream if used.
- Video works but audio is missing or wrong: Check the source’s audio track, OBS audio meters, and the audio heard in the preview. Confirm that the media file actually has the intended audio.
- The picture or sound breaks at the loop point: Test the source’s playback-end and restart settings, then watch a full transition. Check whether the scene goes blank or the file’s final audio/video frames create a gap.
- OBS will not start or encode reliably on the mini PC: Verify the Linux graphics stack meets OBS’s OpenGL 3.3 requirement and confirm the chosen encoder is available. Reduce settings and test again; the documentation does not specify a universally suitable mini PC or hardware configuration.
- The stream stops after an interruption: Do not assume the encoder or YouTube will resume it automatically. Test network and power recovery, determine whether manual action is needed, and monitor the first unattended run.
