You can run a YouTube Live loop from a Raspberry Pi by having an encoder repeatedly play a local video and send it to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The setup depends on your Pi model, operating system, file format and encoder; there is no single command verified here for every combination. The steps below cover the YouTube connection and the settings to check, while making clear what you must test on your own hardware.
How the setup works
The Raspberry Pi reads a video file, repeats it when playback reaches the end, and sends the resulting stream to YouTube Live. An encoder may simply pass through a compatible, pre-encoded video or decode and encode it in real time. Those approaches place different demands on the Pi: real-time encoding uses processing capacity, while playback or remuxing depends on the encoder’s file-loop support and compatibility with the source.

Before choosing settings, identify your Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS version, video container and codecs, desired resolution and frame rate, and whether your encoder will re-encode the file. Also check that the Pi’s upload connection can sustain the stream bitrate. The official guidance below gives YouTube’s ingest settings and relevant Pi video information, but does not establish a tested end-to-end file-loop recipe for a particular Pi and OS.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2907883.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream, then enter them in your chosen encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it; YouTube says RTMPS encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Connection and stream-key guidance is available at https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9854503.
- Treat the key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in a public command or screenshot, or share it with someone who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, rotate or reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Choose video and encoder settings
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and no more than 4 seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Pi or internet connection can sustain them. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702.

- Choose a resolution and frame rate that the source, encoder and Pi can maintain continuously; YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends up to 60 fps.
- Use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. A connection that fluctuates or is shared with heavy uploads may cause stream-health problems even if its advertised speed appears sufficient.
- Check that the selected codec is actually supported by the chosen Pi and encoder. YouTube publishes recommendations for H.264, AV1 and H.265, but that does not mean every Pi pipeline can output each one.
- If the file is already encoded in a format accepted by your encoder, playback or remuxing may avoid a real-time encode. Verify compatibility and ensure the encoder explicitly supports looping the file at end-of-file.
Set up file looping and test before going live
In the encoder, select the local file as the video source and enable its repeat or loop option. Configure the YouTube stream URL and key, protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. The exact setting names and behavior vary by encoder and version. In particular, check what happens when the file reaches its end, when the network disconnects, and when the encoder process restarts; looping playback alone does not guarantee that the YouTube connection will reconnect.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for the stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm that the preview shows the expected picture and audio, and review YouTube’s stream-health indicators before starting the broadcast.
- Start the stream from the encoder or Live Control Room as required by your chosen workflow. Monitor audio, video and stream health after it begins. YouTube recommends testing the feed and checking the preview and stream health; its guidance is at https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702 and https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853834.
What a Raspberry Pi can sustain
Do not assume all Pi models encode video the same way. Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation says Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its low-latency option can use CPU cores less efficiently and reduce the maximum achievable frame rate; the documented camera workflow can achieve 1080p30, but performance depends on the source and pipeline. That camera example is not a guarantee for looping a file through a different encoder. See Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note, updated 6 May 2026, compares Pi 5 software encoding with Pi 4 hardware encoding and includes FFmpeg benchmarks: Raspberry Pi H.264 encoding performance note. Those encoding benchmarks are not a verified YouTube file-loop command or a promise of sustained streaming performance. Test your selected file and settings on the exact Pi you plan to use.

Plan for interruptions and long broadcasts
For an always-on setup, test what happens after a network interruption, encoder crash, Pi restart and power interruption. Check CPU load, temperature, available storage, network stability and Live Control Room stream health during a sustained test. These are practical reliability checks, not guarantees that a Pi will stream continuously or recover automatically.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold does not establish that one longer broadcast will be archived, nor that a continuous stream can run indefinitely. For a long-running channel where preserving separate archives matters, consider planned shorter sessions and confirm the current YouTube guidance before relying on a particular archive outcome: YouTube live stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL, key and protocol in the encoder. Confirm that the stream is set up in Live Control Room and that the encoder supports the selected ingest protocol.
- The preview is missing, unstable or reports poor health: Check upload stability and bitrate first. Reduce the output demands to a resolution, frame rate and bitrate the connection and Pi can sustain, then test again.
- The video stops at the end of the file: Confirm that looping is enabled for the file source and that the encoder’s loop behavior works at end-of-file. Restarting the stream process and reconnecting to YouTube are separate behaviors; verify both rather than assuming one implies the other.
- Video stutters or the Pi struggles: Check CPU load and temperature, then test a lower resolution or frame rate, or use compatible pre-encoded playback if your encoder supports it. A benchmark for one Pi pipeline does not predict performance in another.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset or rotate it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- A long broadcast is missing from archives: YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume that a longer single broadcast will be saved as an archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Pi, computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
