How to Test Responsive Layouts with Percy Across Viewport Sizes

Configure Percy widths around your app’s real responsive transitions, capture separate DOM states when the interface changes structure, and budget one screenshot per width.

Configure Percy to render visual snapshots at widths that exercise your application’s real responsive breakpoints. A single captured DOM can cover several widths when it represents the page correctly at each size; if the interface changes its DOM based on viewport width, resize the test browser and capture the relevant state at each width instead.

Choose viewport widths that test real layout changes

Start with the breakpoints and component transitions your application actually uses—not a generic device list. Include representative narrow and wide layouts, and add widths immediately on either side of a breakpoint when a change there could cause a visual defect. For example, if a navigation bar switches to a menu at a particular CSS breakpoint, cover the layouts on both sides of that transition.

Percy’s documented default width list is [375, 1280] when no widths are configured. Treat those as starting values, not proof that your product’s important responsive states are covered. The appropriate set depends on your application’s behavior.

Configure Percy’s responsive widths

You can set widths in the project’s .percy.yml configuration using snapshot.widths, or use snapshot-level settings where the SDK supports them. For example, a project configuration can specify:

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

  widths:
    - 375
    - 768
    - 1280

The values are pixel widths. Percy’s configuration reference also lists a default minimum height of 1024 pixels. Snapshot-level overrides and the precedence of settings depend on the SDK, so check the documentation for the SDK and version used in your project before relying on a particular override.

Capture the right page state at each width

When one DOM is suitable across widths

In the standard workflow, Percy captures a DOM snapshot and renders it at the configured widths. You can trigger a snapshot from your existing browser automation at a stable, representative application state; Percy can then render that DOM at the configured sizes without requiring the test to resize the browser for each width. This works only when the captured DOM represents the relevant page state across those sizes.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
  • SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter

Use consistent snapshot names for the same UI state so the width variants can be compared and grouped meaningfully. BrowserStack/Percy describes the workflow this way: “You provide a list of responsive breakpoint widths and we take care of the rest.”

When the DOM changes with viewport size

Some applications change structure in response to viewport width, rather than simply restyling the same DOM. In that case, a DOM captured at one width may not represent the interface at another. Resize the test browser to each relevant width, capture the correct viewport-specific state, and repeat for the states that matter.

  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
  • Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
  • In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Percy documents responsive DOM capture workflows that can group multiple captures, but the approach requires suitable deferred uploads and matching snapshot names. The responsiveSnapshotCapture flag also has prerequisites and a defined support scope; the feature documentation identifies Percy SDK implementations for Selenium and Playwright. Confirm the required versions and workflow for your integration rather than assuming the flag works identically everywhere.

Review visual diffs and account for usage

Review each responsive comparison against its approved visual baseline in Percy. Each configured responsive width counts as a separate screenshot for monthly usage: BrowserStack’s example counts one snapshot rendered at 375px and 1280px as two screenshots. Plan coverage accordingly, especially when you add many widths or capture multiple states.

Troubleshoot responsive Percy snapshots

  • A breakpoint is missing from the comparison: Check the effective snapshot.widths configuration and any SDK-specific snapshot override. Confirm that the width list includes the transition your application needs to test.
  • The rendered layout looks wrong at a width: Determine whether the captured DOM is valid for that viewport. If the application changes DOM structure at responsive breakpoints, capture a separate snapshot after resizing the browser to that width.
  • Responsive DOM capture does not work in your integration: Verify that your SDK and browser setup meet the documented prerequisites for responsiveSnapshotCapture. Support is scoped to specified workflows and versions; do not assume every integration supports the flag.
  • A narrow viewport cannot be captured as expected: Check the responsive capture feature documentation for browser-specific and older Selenium width limitations. Those implementation constraints are not recommendations for your application’s breakpoints.
  • Screenshot usage is higher than expected: Count every responsive width as a separate screenshot, then account for the number of UI states you capture at those widths.

For a standalone screenshot rather than a Percy baseline comparison, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
