Urlwatch vs Wachete: Which Web Page Monitor Should You Choose?

Choose urlwatch if you want to run and schedule a configurable monitor yourself; consider Wachete if you want a hosted service that checks pages while your own devices are offline. The right fit also depends on whether the target page needs JavaScript or login access, how you want to receive alerts, and the current limits of Wachete’s plans.

How urlwatch and Wachete differ

The key distinction is where each check runs. urlwatch is software you invoke on a machine or environment you control. Wachete says its monitors run on its servers, so your computer or phone does not need to stay on. Neither model is automatically better: self-hosting gives you control over configuration and scheduling, while a hosted service avoids maintaining a checking environment.

Where checks run When you run it, commonly through a schedule you configure. On Wachete’s servers, according to its FAQ.
Configuration YAML job definitions, processing filters, and reporter configuration. Hosted monitor setup with a page URL, extraction target, frequency, and alert settings.
Page handling URL retrieval, browser navigation for JavaScript-dependent pages, and documented shell jobs. Wachete advertises dynamic and login-protected pages and monitoring of whole pages or selected sections.
Alerts and integrations Terminal, email, and third-party reporters are documented. Wachete lists email, phone notifications, chat destinations, API, webhooks, Zapier, browser extension, and mobile-app options.

These are capabilities described by the respective projects and vendor, not a guarantee that every site will work. Check the exact page and access requirements before relying on either monitor.

How urlwatch checks for changes

A urlwatch job describes what to retrieve or run. On each invocation, urlwatch obtains the job’s output, applies configured processing, compares it with the previous state, and calls enabled reporters when it detects a difference. This makes it useful when you want to filter out irrelevant page text or choose where and when the monitoring process runs.

#1 Best Overall
Web Alert (Website Change Monitor)
  • Notification when a website of your choice changes
  • Visual difference of all modifications to a website detected (diff)
  • Choose exactly which part or parts of a page to watch
  • Check pages even behind logins, HTTP Authentications, form posts or long navigational sequences

Scheduling and operating effort

You are responsible for installing and configuring urlwatch and ensuring a suitable environment runs it on schedule. Its documentation illustrates cron scheduling and recommends not running the illustrated setup more often than every 30 minutes. That is a documentation recommendation for the example, not a universal service limit. A check cannot happen while the schedule or environment is unavailable.

Pages and notifications

The documented job types include ordinary URL retrieval, browser navigation for JavaScript-rendered pages, and shell commands. Filters can extract or transform content before comparison, helping reduce noise when only a portion of a page matters. Reporters include terminal and email options as well as third-party services. Browser navigation and filters add flexibility, but do not guarantee access to pages protected by bot checks or unusual authentication.

How Wachete handles monitoring

Wachete describes itself as a hosted monitor: its FAQ says checks run on servers in different locations. It advertises whole-page and selected-part monitoring, dynamic pages, login-protected pages, and changes to text or files such as PDF, Word, and Excel documents. Listed notification and integration routes include email, phone, Slack, Teams, Discord, Telegram, API, webhooks, and Zapier.

These are vendor-stated capabilities. If a particular page requires authentication, depends on JavaScript, or is business-critical, confirm that Wachete supports the exact case and plan you intend to use rather than assuming a general feature description guarantees success.

Plan allowances and details to verify

Wachete’s homepage, as accessed in 2026, listed these static-page allowances. The displayed paid prices and check intervals appeared as question marks, so the table does not establish costs or checking cadence.

Wachete tier as displayed Static pages listed Price and check interval in accessed view
Free 5 Price and interval not stated; displayed as “?”
Paid tier 50 Price and interval not stated; displayed as “?”
Paid tier 100 Price and interval not stated; displayed as “?”
Paid tier 500 Price and interval not stated; displayed as “?”
Paid tier 3,000 Price and interval not stated; displayed as “?”

The same pricing view displayed zero dynamic pages in plan rows, while Wachete’s separate feature material advertises dynamic-page monitoring. Do not infer from that discrepancy that dynamic monitoring is unavailable or included: confirm current plan terms directly on Wachete’s pricing page. The page also describes a seven-day subscription trial and says payment accepts PayPal, Google Pay, or credit card.

Which monitor fits your use case?

Consider urlwatch when you want control

  • You are comfortable installing software and maintaining a machine or environment to run it.
  • You want to choose the schedule and configure YAML jobs, filters, or reporters.
  • You prefer monitoring output under your control rather than relying on a hosted service.

Consider Wachete when you want hosted checks

  • You want checks to continue while your own devices are turned off.
  • You prefer a hosted service and its listed notification or integration channels.
  • You need to evaluate its advertised handling of selected page regions, dynamic content, or login-protected pages.

For either option, start with the actual target page. Identify whether it renders content with JavaScript, requires login, changes frequently for unrelated reasons, or exposes a stable section you can monitor. Then confirm that the tool can access it and that the alert route and plan limits suit your needs.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for capturing pages

If your goal is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than maintain a change monitor, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a like-for-like replacement for urlwatch or Wachete’s change alerts. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its API is documented at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation.

  • Connection between camera and Wi-Fi router :Up to 30 m (100 ft.) Transmission distance in open field; Wi-Fi Frequency is 2.4 GHz; WLAN: 802.11 b/g/n

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
