To check for memory errors in Windows, save your work, open Run with Windows + R, enter mdsched, and choose Restart now and check for problems. If the test reports errors, take them seriously—but don’t assume the result identifies a particular RAM stick. Retest with memory settings at their supported defaults, then compare modules and slots systematically.
Choose a test that fits your situation
| Method | What it does | What it can and cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Memory Diagnostic | Runs a built-in Windows test after a restart. Microsoft documents Standard as the default and Extended as a more thorough, slower option. | Convenient for a first check, but a clean run only means that run did not detect an error. It does not rule out an intermittent problem. |
| MemTest86 | Boots from USB media, outside the normal Windows session. | Offers a separate testing route, but a failure can involve other platform components and does not automatically identify a defective module. |
| Memtest86+ | An alternative project with public technical documentation. | Its documentation also cautions that CPU, cache, or motherboard behavior can affect results. Do not assume it is identical to MemTest86 or that either tool always detects every fault the other misses. |
| One-module and slot comparisons | Tests individual RAM modules and supported slots to narrow down where a problem follows. | Requires physical access and careful notes; reseating and system-specific memory mapping can affect the outcome. |
Prepare before testing
- Write down what is happening: for example, repeatable crashes, random restarts, freezes, blue screens, application errors, or failure to boot. A symptom or stop code alone does not prove RAM is faulty.
- Save open work before any restart-based test. Back up important files before extended diagnosis, especially if memory errors are repeatable; marginal memory can contribute to data loss or disk corruption.
- If the computer is stable enough to use, note any memory profile or overclock settings, such as XMP. You will want to know whether a result occurred at the current settings or at the supported defaults.
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- In Windows, save your work and close applications. Open Run from Start or press Windows + R.
- Enter
mdschedand select Restart now and check for problems. The computer restarts and begins the test. - The default test is Standard. To choose the more thorough Extended test, press F1 on the diagnostic screen, change Test Mix to Extended, then press F10. Extended takes longer.
- After Windows restarts, check the notification after signing in. If you missed it, open Event Viewer and go to Application and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > MemoryDiagnostics-Results > Debug. Microsoft identifies Event ID 2001 as indicating that no memory errors were detected.
A result with no detected errors is useful, but it is not a guarantee that the computer has no memory problem. Intermittent faults can be difficult to reproduce. If the symptoms continue, try another test or repeat testing under a controlled configuration.
Try a bootable test if you need a separate check
MemTest86
PassMark distributes MemTest86 as a bootable memory diagnostic for use from USB media. Follow its current USB instructions to prepare the drive, and back up any files already on it first—the preparation process can erase existing contents. No particular brand or drive capacity is established as necessary here.
A test outside Windows can be useful when you want another route to check memory, but it is not a perfect way to isolate a RAM stick. PassMark notes that CPU or motherboard problems can also cause a test crash, and a reported address alone does not necessarily map to one particular DIMM.

- APPLICABLE SCENARIO: This memory diagnostic analyzer is used to test various faults caused by hardware open circuits and short circuits in memory, addressing issues such as poor graphics memory performance
- FAST CHARGING: The memory tester use LED lights to test all data cables in the memory. When hardware faults occur in these data cable circuits, the brightness of the LED indicator light will change, whether they are particularly bright or not. Insert the memory module that need to be tested into the slot of the memory tester. If all indicator lights are on and the brightness is consistent, indicate that there is no open circuit or short circuit fault in the data line circuit of the
- USING TIPS: If the indicator light flashes during testing, indicate poor with the gold finger. If the indicator light does not light up, indicate an open circuit fault in the hardware. Check the wear of the gold finger, whether the is damaged, and whether the PCB circuit is open, identify the faulty pin based on the numerical indication of the indicator light, and then use a multimeter to identify the specific cause of the fault. After passing the hardware test of

Memtest86+
Memtest86+ is another project with technical documentation. Its documentation likewise explains that testing exercises the CPU, caches, and motherboard as well as memory. Treat either tool as evidence about system stability, not as a stand-alone diagnosis of every possible failure.
What a memory-test error means
Do not dismiss a reported error just because the computer still seems usable. PassMark says most reported memory errors are valid and advises correcting valid errors. Its troubleshooting guidance notes that a small number of failing addresses and one or two failing bits can be strong evidence of a real error, and that intermittent errors are still valid. There can also be system-level complications, including cases where a test has trouble determining the amount of memory.

- [Compatibility] RAM memory diagnostic analyzer Suitable for desktop ddr3, ddr4, ddr5udmm, ddr5rdimm memory, making it an ideal choice for repairing computers without causing any harm.
- [User-friendly Design] RAM tester ddr3 ddr4 easy-to-use memory diagnostic analyzer with indicator lights for quick fault detection and memory module testing.
- Power Mode] Ram memory tester can be powered by battery or type c cable, allowing for charging and discharging at the same time.
- [Hardware Diagnostics] Led lights help identify open circuits and short circuits in memory, improving graphics memory performance.
An error means the test observed a problem under the conditions of that run. It does not, by itself, prove that a specific RAM module is defective or that RAM is the only cause. Incompatible memory, overly aggressive timings, firmware, the motherboard, or the CPU and its memory controller can also be involved.
Retest at supported default settings
- Consult the motherboard or system manual for the recommended slots and supported memory configurations.
- If a profile such as XMP is enabled, disable it temporarily and return memory to supported default settings. Retest to see whether the error persists without the profile.
- If problems continue, check the system or motherboard maker’s support information for a relevant BIOS update. Follow the maker’s update procedure; do not change memory voltage casually, since excessive voltage can damage components.
If errors disappear at defaults but return with a profile enabled, that points toward a stability or compatibility issue with the configured settings; it does not establish that the memory is healthy in every configuration. Keep the system within configurations supported by its maker.

Find out whether the problem follows a module or a slot
When practical, compare one module at a time in slots recommended by the motherboard manual. Keep a written record so each result can be tied to the physical stick, slot, settings, and test used.
- Shut down the computer and follow the system or motherboard maker’s instructions for safely accessing and handling memory.
- Test one module in a recommended slot at supported default settings. Record which physical stick and slot you used, the test, and the result.
- Repeat with the other module or modules, keeping the slot and settings the same where possible.
- If a result differs, swap a module into another supported slot and repeat. Change one thing at a time so you can see whether the error appears to follow the stick or the location.
- If the error follows the same stick across supported slots: that supports a module fault. Confirm with repeat testing before seeking warranty service or replacement.
- If different known-good modules fail in one slot: investigate the slot, seating, motherboard, firmware, or memory-controller path rather than assuming every module is bad.
- If modules work individually but fail together: check the manual’s supported multi-module arrangement and compatibility guidance; the issue may involve configuration, timings, or platform stability.
These comparisons narrow the possibilities; they are not definitive proof. Moving a module can reseat it and improve a poor contact, while memory-address mapping varies by CPU and motherboard design. A changed result after reseating does not by itself show that the memory hardware is healthy.
What to do when errors persist
- If repeatable errors remain at supported defaults and appear to follow one module, contact the memory or system maker about warranty replacement.
- Before buying replacement RAM, check the exact system or motherboard documentation, including its qualified-vendor list and supported memory configuration.
- If multiple known-good modules fail in one location, or a test repeatedly locks up, the motherboard, CPU, firmware, or memory controller may need investigation. Contact the system or component maker if its stability guidance does not resolve the issue.
- Keep important data backed up while diagnosing a system with repeatable errors. Do not treat the absence of an obvious crash as a reason to ignore them.
Why results may not match from one run to another
Memory faults can be intermittent, and results can change with settings, seating, module placement, or other platform behavior. A test that passes once does not cancel a reproducible error from another run. Record each run’s settings and hardware arrangement, return to supported defaults, and repeat comparisons methodically. If the failure remains inconsistent or the test itself crashes, involve the system or component manufacturer rather than assigning blame to a particular stick from one result.
