Start with Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, then play Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. That release-order path best preserves the series’ story reveals. Ultra Despair Girls is an optional, action-focused spin-off; skip it if you only want the numbered mystery games.
Recommended first-play order
- Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc — Start here. It is the series’ first entry and introduces the killing-game premise and Class Trials. Spike Chunsoft’s game page identifies it as the beginning of the series.
- Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair — Play this second. NIS America describes it as the sequel to Trigger Happy Havoc. NIS America’s announcement establishes that relationship.
- Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls — Play it after the first two if you want the story-bridging spin-off. It follows Komaru Naegi and Toko Fukawa in an action-adventure, rather than another numbered mystery-and-trial game. NIS America described it as bridging the first two titles in its 2015 announcement.
- Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony — Continue here after the earlier Hope’s Peak sequence. Spike Chunsoft frames V3 as a new world with a new cast, while the official series portal places its release after the first two games and Ultra Despair Girls. See the V3 game page and official series portal.
This order follows the official release chronology and the publisher-described sequel and bridging relationships. It is a first-play recommendation, not a claim that every entry has identical gameplay or is required to understand every later game.

Do you need to play Ultra Despair Girls?
No, not if your goal is to play only the numbered mainline mystery games. It is a spin-off and changes the format to action-adventure. For the fuller story sequence, place it after Goodbye Despair and before V3; its publisher’s description of it as a bridge between the first two makes playing it earlier a poor fit for a first run.
Is Danganronpa V3 the same as Danganronpa 3?
No. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is a game with a new cast and “new world” framing. Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School is an anime, not another game in this play-order list. The similar numbering can cause confusion, so check the full title when choosing what to watch or play.

What is included in Danganronpa Decadence?
Danganronpa Decadence is a four-game Nintendo Switch collection: Trigger Happy Havoc, Goodbye Despair, V3: Killing Harmony, and Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp. It does not include Ultra Despair Girls. Spike Chunsoft describes Decadence as a physical collection with all four games on one release; its North American announcement lists Amazon among retailers and notes availability may be limited. That announcement does not establish current stock or price.
Danganronpa S is a boardgame-style bonus game, not a substitute for any of the narrative entries. If you want the bridging spin-off as well, you will need to obtain Ultra Despair Girls separately where it is available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which edition or platform should you choose?
Choose based on the platform you own, whether you want a physical Switch bundle or individual editions, and whether you want to play Ultra Despair Girls. Decadence bundles the three main games and Danganronpa S for Switch; it does not solve the spin-off requirement. For other platforms, check the current regional store listing for each title before buying.
