ChatGPT text can look different after you paste it because Word or Google Docs decides whether to preserve the copied formatting, adapt it to the document, or strip formatting entirely. The result depends on the paste option, the app version, and the styles already in your document—not on one universal ChatGPT clipboard format. For a clean paste, use Ctrl+Shift+V on a PC or Command+Shift+V on a Mac in Google Docs, or choose Keep Text Only in Word.
Why does ChatGPT text change font or spacing when I paste it?
Paste behavior is controlled mainly by the receiving app. Word offers choices to keep the source appearance, adapt text to the destination, or remove formatting. Google Docs also provides a paste-without-formatting shortcut. Existing paragraph styles and direct formatting in your document can affect how pasted text looks.

Microsoft describes three Word options: Keep Source Formatting retains the copied text’s formatting and associated style definitions; Merge Formatting discards most direct formatting while potentially retaining emphasis such as bold or italics; and Keep Text Only removes formatting and non-text content so the text takes on the style of the destination. The same passage can therefore appear differently depending on the selected paste command and the document’s styles. Microsoft explains Word’s paste-formatting choices.
The exact clipboard data produced by ChatGPT is not established consistently for every client, browser, and operating-system combination in the cited sources. A Google Docs Product Expert suggested in a community reply on October 30, 2023, that copied content from outside sources can bring along code that conflicts with Docs; that is a support explanation, not a universal specification of ChatGPT’s clipboard output. How do I paste ChatGPT text into Google Docs without formatting?
- Place the cursor where the text should go in your Google Doc.
- Paste as plain text: press Ctrl+Shift+V on a PC or Command+Shift+V on a Mac. Google lists these as the platform-specific shortcuts for pasting without formatting. See Google Docs keyboard shortcuts.
- Apply document styles afterward if you want headings, spacing, or emphasis. Plain-text paste is useful for avoiding unwanted source appearance, but it also removes formatting you may have wanted to keep.
Which Word paste option should I choose?

Choose an option for a single paste
After pasting in Word desktop, open the Paste Options control and select Keep Text Only, Merge Formatting, or Keep Source Formatting according to the result you want. If Paste Options is not visible, Microsoft says it can be enabled in Word’s Advanced options; the control may not appear when the clipboard contains pure text.

Make text-only paste the default in Word desktop
- Open File > Options > Advanced.
- Under Cut, copy, and paste, find Pasting from other programs.
- Set the default to Keep Text Only if you want copied content from ChatGPT or other applications to paste without source formatting.

Does Word for the web use the same paste behavior?
Not exactly. Microsoft says Word for the web differs from desktop Office because of browser technology limitations. While editing in Chrome, Firefox, or Chromium-based Edge, use Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or Command+Shift+V on Mac to paste text only. What if I want headings and emphasis rather than plain text?
Plain-text paste removes formatting, so it is not the right choice when you want to retain structured headings or emphasis. In Word, try Merge Formatting to adapt the text to the destination while keeping some emphasis. In Google Docs, if the copied content is Markdown and you want Docs to convert its structure, use the separate Paste from Markdown workflow: right-click in the document and select Paste from Markdown.
