Use a dedicated test account to establish an authenticated browser state, load that state in your tests, confirm the protected page is ready, then compare a named screenshot against an approved baseline. Authentication gets the browser to the right page; the screenshot assertion detects visual changes once it is there. Keep the saved login state secret, and run baseline and comparison tests in the same browser environment.
Choose a framework and define the checkpoint
Prefer the browser test framework your project already uses unless you have a concrete need for another framework or a hosted visual-review workflow. Playwright Test includes screenshot comparison through toHaveScreenshot(). Cypress can capture screenshots, but comparison with an approved baseline is provided by a visual-testing plugin or integration rather than its screenshot command alone.

| Decision | Playwright Test | Cypress with visual testing |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot comparison | Built-in toHaveScreenshot() and reference images. Playwright visual comparisons. |
cy.screenshot() captures an image; a plugin or service adds comparison. Cypress visual testing and screenshot guide. |
| Authenticated setup | Save and load browser storage state. Playwright authentication. | Drive the app to a logged-in state in the test before capture. Cypress visual testing. |
| Review workflow | Reference images and test output; teams manage approval in their existing workflow. | Some integrations provide hosted diff and approval workflows. Cypress documents Percy as one example. |
| Scope | Capture a page or configured screenshot path. | Capture full pages or selected elements, depending on the integration; use checkpoints that represent meaningful states. |
Choose a checkpoint that answers a real regression question: for example, whether the signed-in account overview still lays out its navigation, balance panel, and recent activity correctly. Use an element capture when a component alone is under test; use a full-page image when relationships across the page matter. A screenshot is not an accessibility test: it does not determine whether text contrast meets accessibility standards.

- Use a dedicated test environment and test account rather than a personal account. Decide whether tests can safely share that account. Sharing works when tests do not interfere through server-side mutations; use separate accounts or isolate the data when one test changes state another test reads.
- Make test data repeatable. Seed or reset the account to known values, and control changing API responses with fixtures where appropriate. Dates, fonts, third-party content, and viewport size can also affect the rendered image.
- Treat authentication state as a secret. Playwright warns that saved browser state may contain cookies and headers capable of impersonating the account. Store it in a local auth directory such as
playwright/.auth, add that directory to.gitignore, and never commit the state file.
Set up authenticated screenshots in Playwright
The following pattern saves storage state in a setup project and reuses it in the visual test. Replace the example URLs, selectors, and credentials with your application’s login flow. Store credentials in environment variables or your CI secret store; do not put real credentials in source code.

1. Ignore generated authentication state
# .gitignore
playwright/.auth/
2. Create a setup test that signs in and saves state
// tests/auth.setup.ts
import { test as setup, expect } from '@playwright/test';
import fs from 'node:fs';
const authFile = 'playwright/.auth/user.json';
setup('authenticate', async ({ page }) => {
const email = process.env.TEST_USER_EMAIL;
const password = process.env.TEST_USER_PASSWORD;
if (!email || !password) throw new Error('Set TEST_USER_EMAIL and TEST_USER_PASSWORD');
fs.mkdirSync('playwright/.auth', { recursive: true });
await page.goto('https://app.example.test/login');
await page.getByLabel('Email').fill(email);
await page.getByLabel('Password').fill(password);
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign in' }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account overview' })).toBeVisible();
await page.context().storageState({ path: authFile });
});
3. Configure the setup dependency and authenticated project
// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
projects: [
{ name: 'setup', testMatch: /auth.setup.ts/ },
{
name: 'chromium-authenticated',
use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'], storageState: 'playwright/.auth/user.json' },
dependencies: ['setup'],
testIgnore: /auth.setup.ts/,
},
],
});
In a project that already has a Playwright configuration, merge the setup dependency and authenticated project into it rather than replacing unrelated settings. Keep the browser project, viewport, and operating environment consistent when creating and checking screenshot references.
4. Assert the signed-in state, then compare the screenshot
// tests/account.spec.ts
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('account overview visual checkpoint', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://app.example.test/account');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Account overview' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account-overview.png', { fullPage: true });
});
Run the test with npx playwright test. When the named reference does not exist, Playwright creates it; inspect and approve that initial image through your normal code-review process. Later runs compare against the saved reference. The assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to match before saving, which helps avoid a capture taken while rendering is still changing. For a deliberate design change, review the difference first and only then update the reference using Playwright’s screenshot-update workflow, such as npx playwright test --update-snapshots.

Make the visual comparison reliable
Wait for a meaningful ready condition
Do not rely on an arbitrary sleep as proof that the page is ready. Assert on the content or state that matters, such as a signed-in heading, loaded table row, or completed status. Cypress puts the principle plainly: “Best Practice: Take a snapshot only after you confirm the page is done changing.” Cypress visual testing.
Control rendering noise at its source
- Use repeatable API fixtures or seeded records when live values would vary between runs.
- Set a fixed viewport and keep fonts and browser settings consistent.
- Disable or finish animations before capture. Avoid taking the image during transitions or while lazy-loaded content is still appearing.
- For unstable third-party content that cannot be controlled, mask or hide only the small affected region. Broad image thresholds can conceal real regressions elsewhere.
- Capture a small number of meaningful states rather than snapshotting every incidental screen. Focus on important pages and shared components.
Keep baseline and comparison environments aligned
Pixels can differ with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate references in the same environment used for comparison—ideally the same CI image and browser version—and avoid casually regenerating baselines on a developer’s different machine.

Cypress capture and comparison
Cypress’s cy.screenshot() captures an image, and Cypress can automatically capture screenshots when tests fail in cypress run. Neither behavior by itself compares an image with an approved baseline. For regression checks, add a visual-testing plugin or service, then configure it to capture the logged-in state, compare against a reviewed reference, and present or report the difference. Cypress documents Percy as an integration option with a review workflow.
Regardless of the integration, perform the same sequence: establish the authenticated state, assert that the target page is ready, capture the intended page or component, and review the resulting diff before accepting a new reference.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The test is redirected to login. The state file may be missing, expired, or generated before the login completed. Confirm that the setup test reaches a signed-in page before saving state; regenerate the file and check that the authenticated project loads the correct path.
- CI cannot find the state file. The setup project may not run before the authenticated tests, or a stale local file may be masking the issue. Confirm the project dependency and that the setup test writes to the same path configured as
storageState. - Local runs pass but CI reports screenshot differences. Check operating system, browser version, headless mode, viewport, fonts, and test data. Align the reference-generation and comparison environments before changing thresholds.
- The screenshot is intermittently different. Replace fixed waits with an assertion for the actual page state. Control API data and dates, wait for lazy content, and disable or finish animations. Mask only a narrow uncontrollable region.
- Concurrent tests corrupt each other’s results. A shared account may be mutable. Give parallel tests separate accounts or isolate/reset their server-side data.
- A baseline update makes failures disappear. Updating references without reviewing the diff can turn a regression into the accepted image. Inspect the change and establish why it is intentional before approving it.
- The screenshot looks correct but users still report accessibility problems. Visual diffs do not measure properties such as text contrast against accessibility criteria. Run accessibility checks separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright create a reference image automatically?
Yes. The first run of a named `toHaveScreenshot()` assertion creates its reference; review that image before treating it as approved.
Can screenshot regression tests replace accessibility testing?
No. A pixel comparison does not evaluate standards such as text contrast; run accessibility checks separately.
