Use Playwright Test to capture screenshots of representative Magento storefront pages and states, then compare later runs with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). Keep the baseline and test runs in a consistent browser and operating-system environment, review visual diffs before updating snapshots, and retain functional tests for behavior that screenshots cannot verify.
Choose a testing path that fits the storefront
Magento storefronts can use different frontend stacks, so first identify the storefront implementation and its support requirements. If it is Adobe Commerce Storefront, Adobe advises checking the @dropins/tools version in the project’s package.json against its browser compatibility guidance. Browser support depends on the boilerplate suite; do not treat one suite’s browser list as a timeless Magento-wide requirement.

For a direct, code-owned workflow, Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions within its test runner. Percy is another possible path: its Playwright client repository documents a Playwright integration. Consider baseline ownership, diff review, CI fit, browser and viewport coverage, data handling, maintenance, and cost when evaluating a hosted service. Current Percy pricing and plan details are not established here, so verify them directly before choosing.
Build a useful route and state matrix
Start with pages where a rendering defect could obstruct shopping or navigation. This is a practical starting point, not an Adobe-prescribed checklist; adapt it to the store’s routes and features.

| Store area | Useful visual state to capture |
|---|---|
| Home | Initial page with primary navigation and key content visible |
| Category or product listing | Product grid, filters, sorting, and pagination where applicable |
| Product detail | Default selection and a selected variant, if variants exist |
| Search | Results for a stable query, plus an empty-results state if relevant |
| Cart | Empty cart and populated cart, if both matter to the store |
| Checkout entry | Initial checkout state without proceeding through unrelated payment flows |
| Navigation and feedback | Open menu, validation message, or another important interactive state |
Use controlled test data and deterministic navigation. Keep locale, currency, authentication, inventory, and consent state predictable. Wait for the content and fonts under test to load; suppress animation, rotating content, and timestamps when they are not themselves the subject of the test. These controls reduce incidental differences, but they cannot eliminate rendering variation between environments.
Set browser and viewport coverage from support needs
Use the support matrix for the storefront’s actual boilerplate and the browsers your project promises to support. Adobe’s storefront guidance recommends testing the oldest and newest supported versions of each major browser the team cares about, along with real phones and tablets and common viewport widths. The compatibility table is tied to specific @dropins/tools suites and can change, so check it alongside the project’s installed version rather than copying a browser row into a permanent policy.
Keep the matrix focused: every browser, viewport, and route combination multiplies the number of screenshots to maintain. Add combinations for supported or business-critical experiences, not merely because a device preset exists. Browser emulation is useful for repeatable viewport checks, but it is not a substitute for testing on real phones or tablets when those devices are part of the support requirement.

Install Playwright Test and add a screenshot assertion
In an existing JavaScript project, install the test runner and its browser binaries using the official Playwright installation guide. The following test assumes that BASE_URL points to a test storefront with stable content and that the home route is accessible.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('Magento storefront home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await page.goto(process.env.BASE_URL ?? 'http://localhost:3000', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
});
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png', {
fullPage: true,
});
});
Run the test with the Playwright test runner, for example npx playwright test. The first run creates the expected snapshot; subsequent runs compare the rendered page against it. Keep snapshots in the runner’s expected snapshot location and commit reviewed baselines with the test changes. Do not regenerate snapshots automatically just to make a failing run pass.
Capture a repeatable interactive state
For a state such as an open menu, drive the page into that state through the same user-facing control the test is intended to cover, then capture it. Replace the selector with one that exists in the storefront.

test('navigation menu visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 900 });
await page.goto(process.env.BASE_URL ?? 'http://localhost:3000');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Menu' }).click();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-menu-open.png');
});
Make the state’s prerequisites explicit: seed or select the intended product data, set the required locale or currency, and authenticate consistently if the page requires it. Avoid capturing while content is still changing. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation notes that browser rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Run baseline creation and comparison in the same controlled environment wherever possible.

Review and update baselines deliberately
A screenshot mismatch means the rendered output changed; it does not by itself prove a defect. Examine the expected, actual, and diff images produced by the test setup. Determine whether the change is intentional, an application regression, or environmental noise. Fix unintended changes in the application or test setup. Update a baseline only after reviewing and accepting an intentional visual change.
- Check whether the changed region affects layout, product information, navigation, readability, or a user action.
- Confirm that data, locale, currency, consent state, and viewport match the baseline run.
- Check for late-loading fonts, images, or third-party content before relaxing a comparison.
- Keep baseline changes reviewable alongside the code that caused them.
Run the suite in CI without introducing screenshot noise
Use a stable CI browser image and fixed viewport and device settings. Generate and compare snapshots in an aligned operating-system and browser environment; otherwise font rasterization or other rendering differences can create failures unrelated to the storefront change. Preserve failure artifacts such as expected, actual, and diff images where your Playwright setup makes them available, so a reviewer can diagnose a mismatch rather than merely seeing a failed test.

Scale coverage gradually. A small route set on one supported desktop configuration is easier to keep trustworthy than a large matrix whose baselines are noisy or rarely reviewed. Expand browser and viewport coverage when support commitments or observed risk justify the maintenance cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep visual tests alongside functional tests
Visual assertions catch changes in what the page renders, including spacing, typography, and visible content arrangement. They do not establish that checkout submits correctly, a filter returns the right products, or an accessibility interaction works. Adobe’s Commerce testing resources cover Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source and point to application-testing approaches such as the Functional Testing Framework. Adobe cloud guidance also discusses testing before launch, including MFTF for application testing and Codeception for PHP code intended for contribution to Cloud package repositories. Use behavioral tests for behavior and screenshot comparisons for rendering.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Many pixels differ on every run | Runs are using different rendering environments or changing page data | Align OS and browser versions, viewport, headless mode, locale, currency, inventory, and test data. |
| Only text or layout shifts differ | Fonts or content may not have finished loading, or the page content is dynamic | Wait for relevant content and fonts; stabilize timestamps, rotating banners, and other changing content. |
| A screenshot is blank or incomplete | Navigation may have finished before relevant application content rendered | Wait for a meaningful page element or state before the assertion and confirm the route loaded the intended storefront. |
| An interactive screenshot does not match | The expected state was not reached consistently | Use a deterministic interaction and assert that the menu, variant, validation message, or other state is visible before capture. |
| Failures appear only in CI | CI may differ from the baseline environment or lack stable test inputs | Use the same browser image and fixed settings for both; inspect the actual and diff images before changing the baseline. |
| Snapshot updates hide a real regression | Baselines were refreshed without review | Review each visual change and update only intentional changes; keep the baseline diff in code review. |

For a one-call screenshot outside the Playwright baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients.
For example, capture a public storefront URL as WebP with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for a version-controlled Playwright visual regression suite when you need to compare reviewed baselines in CI. Its free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
