Compare the same page in the same browser environment, at the same viewport and state, against an approved screenshot baseline. Repeat that process for each supported language, script, route, and responsive size. A pixel diff reveals visual changes; it cannot tell you whether a translation change is intentional or whether the page has a defect. Review the regional-language text and layout directly.
Plan what to compare
Start with the parts of the site where a visual regression would matter, then make the coverage explicit. Record locale and route in test names so a changed image has enough context to review.

- Routes and components: Include key pages and shared elements such as navigation, search, forms, and checkout or application submission where relevant.
- Languages and scripts: Include every supported language and any distinct script or mixed-script variant that appears in production.
- Responsive sizes: Capture the widths that correspond to the site’s supported layouts, not just one desktop viewport.
- Browsers and devices: Cover the browsers and devices the site actually supports. Add cross-browser runs when they address a real user or rendering risk.
Use real production text or approved representative strings. Latin placeholder text will not reveal whether regional glyphs render correctly or whether longer translations fit.
Make screenshots repeatable
A useful comparison depends on controlling the capture environment. Microsoft Playwright notes that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors (Playwright visual comparisons).

- Keep the browser build, operating system, viewport, rendering settings, and capture mode consistent between baseline and comparison runs. Pin the environment where practical.
- Freeze test data and page state so changing dates, prices, user records, or other dynamic content do not create noise.
- Wait for the page to reach a stable visual state. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing; its assertion options also allow animation handling (Playwright PageAssertions).
- Disable animations when appropriate, but do not hide or alter content whose visual behavior you intend to test.
Set up local comparisons with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot assertions are a practical starting point when you want baselines alongside your tests. Install Playwright Test, then add a test for each important route and locale. In this example, the first run creates the reference image; later runs compare against it.
- Install: Run
npm init playwright@latestin your project and follow the prompts to add Playwright Test. - Create a visual test: Save the following as
tests/visual.spec.ts. Replace the example route and locale values with your site’s supported cases. - Create and inspect the baseline: Run
npx playwright test tests/visual.spec.ts. Review the generated screenshot before treating it as the expected appearance. - Compare later changes: Run the same command in the same environment. Inspect any reported difference; update the baseline only after confirming the change is intended.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('Hindi home page at desktop width', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1365, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/hi/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home-hi-desktop.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled',
});
});
Use explicit names such as home-hi-desktop.png or search-ta-mobile.png to distinguish route, locale, and viewport. Add separate tests or parameterized cases for the actual combinations you support. The example uses networkidle as a simple wait condition; sites with persistent network activity may need a more specific readiness signal, such as waiting for a key element.

Review regional-language rendering
Inspect each target language in the screenshot rather than relying on a numeric diff alone. Check the rendered page for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Missing glyphs, tofu boxes, or unexpected fallback fonts.
- Clipped, overlapping, or unexpectedly wrapped text.
- Navigation labels and buttons that no longer fit or align correctly.
- Mixed-script content, punctuation, and longer translated strings that change the shape of a page.
- Text direction and alignment where the language or component requires them.
These are practical checks to apply to the site’s own language variants; they do not imply that every Indian language or script has the same rendering risks. If a translation or design change is intentional, review and approve the new expected screenshot rather than replacing the baseline automatically.

Tell defects from rendering noise
When a diff appears, first rerun it using the same browser and operating system as the baseline. Then determine whether the change comes from a real layout regression, a font or rendering-environment change, dynamic content, or animation. A threshold can help tolerate small irrelevant pixel changes, but a permissive threshold may conceal a real text or spacing defect.
Mask only regions that are genuinely dynamic and irrelevant to the test, such as a changing timestamp. Keep text and glyph regions visible: masking the very language rendering under review defeats the purpose of the comparison.

When hosted browser review helps
Local Playwright comparisons fit teams that can keep their test environment controlled and want baselines in the existing test and code-review workflow. A hosted service can be useful when you need centralized visual review or managed browser coverage. BrowserStack’s cross-browser visual-testing guidance notes that browser and operating-system differences can affect fonts and form controls, and that each browser counts as a separate screenshot (BrowserStack cross-browser visual testing). Percy documents a Playwright integration for sending comparisons into its hosted review workflow (Percy Playwright integration).
For any hosted workflow, check the provider’s current plan terms and expected snapshot usage before expanding browser coverage. Run additional browsers when they correspond to supported user environments or a specific rendering concern, rather than multiplying captures without a review need.

Keep accessibility checks separate
A screenshot diff can show visual changes, but it cannot establish that a page is accessible. Pair visual review with keyboard checks, semantic and assistive-technology review, and applicable WCAG evaluation. W3C WAI describes Easy Checks as a preliminary review and says normal-size text should have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 (WAI Easy Checks).

Can a pixel difference tell whether a regional-language translation is wrong?
No. It identifies changed pixels, not whether the wording or layout change is intended. Review the text and approve intentional updates as new baselines.
Should I mask text that changes between screenshot runs?
No, not when text rendering is part of the check. Mask only irrelevant dynamic areas; keep the language and glyph regions visible.
