To release a key that you previously held with Puppeteer, call await page.keyboard.up('Shift') (replace Shift with the key you held). This dispatches a keyup event. Use press() instead when you only need a normal press-and-release action.
Release a held key with keyboard.up()
Call keyboard.down() to hold a key, perform the actions that need it held, then call keyboard.up() to release it:

When to use down() and up()
Use the two calls separately when an action must happen while a key is held—for example, hold Shift while moving the text selection with ArrowLeft:

await page.keyboard.press('Backspace');For a one-shot action, await page.keyboard.press('Enter') already performs both the keydown and keyup sequence, so an explicit up() is not needed.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using
type()for a special key: Usepress('ArrowDown')orpress('Enter')for special keys;type()is for text entry. - Expecting
sendCharacter()to release a key: It emits neither keydown nor keyup. Useup(key)to dispatch keyup. - Calling
up()after a simplepress():press()includes release already. Use separatedown()andup()calls only when the key needs to remain held during intervening actions.
These calls control Puppeteer’s browser-side virtual keyboard events; they do not release a physical key on the host computer. The API references reviewed span Puppeteer 25.3.0, 25.9.0, and 25.10.0, so consult the current documentation if your installed version differs.
