Use browser automation to wait for a network-idle condition before capturing the page. In Playwright, navigate with waitUntil: 'networkidle' and then call page.screenshot(). In Puppeteer, its screenshot guide demonstrates waitUntil: 'networkidle2'. Network idle is only a quiet-period signal—not proof that every visual update or application task is finished.
Capture after network idle with Playwright
Install Playwright and its browser if they are not already in your project, then run this Node.js script. It waits for Playwright’s networkidle navigation condition before saving a PNG.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle',
timeout: 30_000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Replace https://example.com with the target URL. The finite navigation timeout prevents the script from waiting indefinitely; the finally block closes Chromium even if navigation or capture fails. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, though this example launches Chromium. See the Playwright Page API for current navigation and screenshot options.
Capture after network idle with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates navigating with networkidle2 and then taking a screenshot. This runnable example also sets a navigation timeout and ensures the browser is closed on failure.

await page.goto('https://example.com', {

Use the browser automation library already present in your project unless you need a particular engine or wait behavior. Puppeteer also exposes page.waitForNetworkIdle() as a separate API; its options let you configure the idle period. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide and waitForNetworkIdle API reference.
What network idle means—and what it does not
Playwright defines networkidle as no network connections for at least 500 ms. Its documentation discourages using this condition as a general signal that a page is ready for testing. Treat it as a practical quiet-period heuristic, not a guarantee that all content has loaded or all scripts have finished changing the page.

A page can become network-quiet while client-side hydration, delayed rendering, animation, or other work is still underway. Conversely, polling, streaming, or recurring analytics requests can keep network activity going even though the part of the page you need is already visible. The screenshot call itself does not wait for network requests to finish; the preceding navigation or explicit wait is what establishes the capture timing.

Wait for the result you need on dynamic pages
If the screenshot must show a particular result—such as a report, product price, or search result—wait for that visible state or element as well as, or instead of, general network silence. A page-specific condition is usually more meaningful than asking whether the whole page is quiet.

await page.goto('https://example.com/results', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 30_000
});
await page.locator('[data-testid="results-ready"]').waitFor({
state: 'visible',
timeout: 15_000
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'results.png' });
Replace the example selector with one that identifies the actual completed state on your page. Playwright’s documentation recommends web assertions to assess readiness and documents locator-based waiting in its Page API. If your application signals completion through a different element or state, wait for that specific signal.
Choose the right capture level
- Playwright: A suitable choice when you want its high-level page API or need the documented browser-engine options of Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit.
- Puppeteer: A suitable choice for a Puppeteer project; its screenshot guide shows the
networkidle2navigation pattern, and its API includes a separate network-idle wait. - Chrome DevTools Protocol: Use the lower-level
Page.captureScreenshotcommand when you need direct Chromium control, such as format, clipping, or capture-beyond-viewport parameters. It is unnecessary for a standard automation workflow. See the Chrome DevTools Protocol reference.
Troubleshoot waits and screenshots
- Navigation times out: The page may have persistent network activity or may not have reached the requested lifecycle condition in time. Set an appropriate finite timeout, then wait for the relevant visible element if general network idle is a poor fit.
- The screenshot is missing content despite network idle: Network silence does not guarantee rendering or application work is complete. Wait for the target content or a page-specific ready state before capturing.
- The wait never seems to finish: Polling, streaming, or recurring requests can prevent a quiet period. Use a visible-state or locator wait for the content you need rather than requiring the entire page to become idle.
- The output is captured too early after navigation: Confirm that the wait is configured on the navigation call and that the screenshot happens afterward. For dynamic content, add an explicit state wait before the screenshot call.
- The browser process remains open after an error: Put browser closure in a
finallyblock, as in the examples, so cleanup runs if navigation or capture throws.

Does network idle guarantee every image has loaded?
No. It indicates a period of network quiet, not that all visual rendering or application work is complete. Wait for the specific content your capture needs.
