To catch mobile regressions before release, automate a small set of important journeys across the browser engines and viewports your audience uses, compare screenshots for key visual states, and track lab and real-user performance separately. Emulation makes checks repeatable; it does not prove behavior on every physical phone, so test on real target browsers or devices when a feature depends on the platform.
Build a mobile test matrix around your users
Do not multiply every page by every phone and browser combination. Choose coverage using your analytics, browser-support policy, and the risk of each feature. Include a narrow mobile viewport and the browser engines that matter to your audience; add combinations when their extra coverage is worth the maintenance.

Playwright can configure projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and combine them with mobile device profiles such as Pixel and iPhone presets. A preset can emulate characteristics including user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch support, and individual tests can override those settings. It is a useful approximation, not proof that the page behaves identically on a physical device. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep the browser binaries aligned with the Playwright version: each Playwright release is tied to specific browser binaries. When updating Playwright, update and reinstall its supported browsers, then review the project documentation for current profiles and behavior. The browser and device matrix is a project decision, not a universal checklist.

Automate the mobile journeys that matter
Start with journeys where a failure has a clear cost to users. Typical candidates include navigation, opening and closing the menu, search, form validation, and product or account flows your site supports. For touch-sensitive interfaces, verify the resulting state rather than merely checking that a control received a tap.
Write assertions against observable outcomes: the expected page or URL, a visible menu, a confirmation, or a validation error. Prefer stable selectors and deterministic test data so a failure points to a product change rather than shifting test setup. The exact journey list should follow your site; the browser tooling enables device and browser configuration but cannot decide which user paths are important to you.
Use visual comparisons for important states
Choose representative pages and states—such as a loaded page, an open menu, or a validation message—and capture them at selected mobile viewports. In Playwright Test, toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image on its first execution and compares later captures against it. Review proposed baseline changes instead of accepting them automatically. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Keep the comparison environment stable. Playwright identifies operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can affect screenshots. A pixel difference means the rendered image changed; it does not, on its own, tell you whether the change is a defect. Pair visual diffs with functional assertions and human review of meaningful layout changes.
Visual checks are especially useful for spotting clipping, unexpected wrapping, shifted elements, missing content, or overlays at a chosen viewport. Treat baseline updates as reviewed code changes, so an intentional redesign is distinguishable from an accidental mobile layout regression.
Measure performance in both lab and field
Use lab runs to catch changes before release
Run Lighthouse or browser performance tooling during development and CI to compare under controlled conditions. Lighthouse’s default configuration emulates a mobile device; its screen, user-agent, and throttling emulation can also be configured. Record the run configuration when comparing results, because scores from different emulation or throttling settings are not equivalent. See Lighthouse emulation documentation.

Lab checks can help identify a regression early, but a simulated audit is not a substitute for how users experience the page on their own devices and networks.

Use field data to understand real users’ experience
Evaluate Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile, with mobile and desktop segmented separately. Google’s published good thresholds are:
| Metric | Good threshold |
|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | ≤ 2.5 seconds |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | ≤ 200 milliseconds |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | ≤ 0.1 |
These are Google’s threshold guidance, updated May 7, 2025—not results achieved by any particular site. Field data reflects variation in devices, networks, and interactions, so use it alongside controlled lab runs. Lighthouse can measure LCP and CLS in lab; INP requires real interaction. Total Blocking Time is a lab proxy, not the same metric as INP. See web.dev’s Core Web Vitals threshold methodology.

Know when emulation is not enough
Use actual target browsers or devices when a risk depends on platform-specific behavior: for example, media playback, touch, keyboard behavior, viewport changes, or platform permissions. Choose hardware and browsers according to your support commitments and audience; the browser matrix should answer a concrete risk, not aim for every possible combination.
Be precise about Safari coverage. Playwright runs WebKit, not branded Safari; its documentation says macOS WebKit is the closest Safari experience for relevant scenarios such as video playback. Chrome for Developers recommends testing Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari and fixing browser-specific issues. That cross-browser recommendation does not make Playwright WebKit identical to Safari. The Chrome for Developers page was last updated April 16, 2024; its Lighthouse PWA audit is deprecated, so do not treat that audit as current guidance. See Playwright’s browser documentation and Chrome for Developers’ cross-browser guidance.
Choose coverage by signal, fidelity, and upkeep
- Coverage: Which browser engines, branded stable browsers, viewport sizes, and actual devices are represented?
- Repeatability: Can you keep viewport, browser version, operating-system image, and network conditions consistent?
- Signal: Do you need functional assertions, pixel changes, lab metrics, field experience, or a combination?
- Platform fidelity: Is an emulated engine adequate, or does the feature warrant branded Safari or a physical device?
- Maintenance: Will the benefit of more device projects and visual baselines justify the time needed to keep them reliable?
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot for visual review or a regression record without building the capture setup, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts a URL in one GET request and can return an image or PDF. For this example, it captures the mobile viewport dimensions shown in the URL parameters; adapt the capture options to the state and viewport you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
