Test your site against a forecast built from your own traffic history and sales plans—not a universal “Black Friday multiplier.” Exercise realistic browsing and checkout journeys, raise load in controlled stages, and measure completed purchases, latency, and errors against thresholds your business sets before the test. Then fix bottlenecks, check quotas and costs, and rehearse monitoring and recovery before the event.

Set a peak-load target and pass criteria

Start with prior holiday traffic, other campaign peaks, current growth, and the coming promotion plan. Estimate the workload you need to handle, then state what the estimate means: requests per second, concurrent users, completed transactions per minute, or a combination. There is no generally established Black Friday traffic multiplier or universal required user count; the target depends on your forecast, architecture, user expectations, and service objectives.

Choose pass criteria before you run the test. For example, set maximum acceptable response times and error rates for product browsing and purchase completion. Those values are business-specific: the sources cited here do not prescribe universal latency or error thresholds. Track successful end-to-end purchases as well as individual requests. A large request count is not useful if customers cannot finish checkout.

Google Cloud’s documentation, updated September 24, 2026, recommends load testing critical projects and workloads three to five months before an event. That gives a team time to analyze results, address capacity limits, and review quota requests and test costs rather than discovering constraints during the promotion.

Model the shopping journey, not just a homepage

Build scenarios around the paths that matter to sales. A typical journey may include a landing or category page, product details, a selection or cart action, and checkout. Identify the requests and dependencies for each step, including the cache behavior you intend to test. If checkout carries a session, cart, or other state from one request to the next, preserve it in the scenario and count a purchase as successful only when the full journey completes.

  • Keep a functional check separate. At low load, confirm that important pages and purchase actions work before interpreting a capacity test.
  • Use realistic request data. Include the relevant product choices, parameters, and session state; a repeated request to one endpoint may not represent customer behavior.
  • Choose cache conditions deliberately. Decide whether the run should represent warm-cache, cold-cache, or a mix. Otherwise, results may reflect an accidental cache condition rather than the event workload.
  • Include relevant dependencies. Scope the components that affect the journey, such as APIs, databases, caches, payment systems, or other third parties, where they are part of your architecture.

AWS Prescriptive Guidance recommends measuring a shopping transaction as a distinct datapoint because checkout comprises dependent requests. Keep both the transaction outcome and component-level request metrics: the first tells you whether the customer completed the task, while the second helps locate a slowdown.

Choose the test shape for the question

One run cannot answer every capacity question. Write down the hypothesis, load curve, duration, and pass/fail criteria for each run. AWS Prescriptive Guidance and Grafana k6 documentation describe different approaches for different behaviors:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Test shape What it answers What to observe
Baseline or smoke check Do the key pages and journey work at modest load? Endpoint health, errors, and whether a purchase can complete.
Expected-load test Can the system handle the forecast workload within its stated limits? Transaction completion, latency, errors, and infrastructure behavior against your pre-set criteria.
Stepped capacity or stress test Where does the system cross a performance or error threshold, and does scaling respond? Results at each load step and whether the configured scaling signals have time to act.
Spike test How does the system respond to a sudden increase? Errors, latency, recovery, and whether the service handles the abrupt change.
Soak or sustained-load test Does performance degrade during prolonged demand? Time-dependent slowdowns, back pressure, and other changes over the hold period.

Use a load curve that reflects the production concern. A gradual step-up is useful for finding a limit and observing scale behavior; an abrupt spike tests a different failure mode. A sustained hold can expose problems that a short peak misses. The right duration and intensity depend on the system and the question, not a universal recipe.

Verify the load generator can deliver the workload

A test can measure its own infrastructure instead of your website if the generator runs out of CPU, memory, task capacity, or account quota. For a distributed test, check the configured regions, task count, virtual users per task, ramp-up, and hold duration. Confirm current quotas and regional capacity for the account and service you plan to use.

AWS’s managed distributed load-testing solution guidance recommends calibrating gradually: raise users per test container while monitoring generator CPU and memory. Run one calibration test at a time when tests share a cluster, because overlapping runs can make shared-cluster metrics difficult to interpret. The example resource limits in that AWS solution apply to its documented default configuration, not to every load generator.

Compare the load you intended to generate with the load actually achieved. If generator resources are saturated or the test cannot reach its planned rate, do not treat the result as a valid measure of the site’s capacity.

Monitor the whole run and diagnose the result

Collect user-facing latency, failed requests, completed transactions, and relevant infrastructure signals while the test is running. For a multi-service site, review the components on the measured path—such as the load balancer, application, database, cache, APIs, payment integration, and other dependencies—rather than relying on a single server metric.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Watch for a load-model trap: with a closed, concurrency-based generator, a slower target can reduce the request rate the test achieves. The site may appear to receive less load precisely because it is responding more slowly. AWS recommends using a constant-request-rate tool when investigating degradation so the offered load does not silently fall as response times rise. Tracing or correlation IDs can help connect a slow customer transaction to the service that caused the delay.

For each run, record the scenario and cache conditions, intended and achieved load, successful transaction count, latency and error outcomes, scaling behavior, and evidence for the bottleneck. Change one meaningful factor, then repeat the same scenario where possible so you can compare results. Review cloud costs and quotas as part of the test plan; Google Cloud recommends evaluating results and requesting quota increases where needed.

Turn test findings into event readiness

Capacity is only one part of preparing for a major sales event. Assign who watches the service, how incidents are escalated, and how the team will recover it. Rehearse the response rather than relying on an assumed plan. Google Cloud’s peak-event guidance recommends disaster-recovery simulations one to three months before the event, plus monitoring during execution and post-event analysis.

Google Cloud’s account of Apigee during the 2018 Black Friday period reported a 95% rise in customer API calls compared with the comparable 2017 period, and peak traffic increasing from 48,000 to 108,000 transactions per second. It also reported 99.999% platform availability for that period. These are historical, vendor-reported figures for Apigee traffic—not a current benchmark for retailers or a target for your own site. The retailer preparation described by Google Cloud included pre-mortems, tabletop exercises, API monitoring, and a staffed war room.

Choose a testing approach by capability, not headline user count

Whether you use an open-source tool, managed distributed service, or a mix, compare approaches against the work your team actually needs to do:

  • Workload fidelity: Can it model multi-step browsing and checkout, including state, cookies, and request data?
  • Load control: Can it produce the needed fixed request rate, concurrency, step-up, sudden spike, or sustained hold?
  • Coverage: Does it exercise backend protocols, real-browser experience, or both? Grafana k6 documents browser metrics and combining browser-based tests with other performance tests.
  • Generator scale and location: Can generators reach the expected load from relevant regions without running into CPU, memory, task, or quota limits?
  • Observability: Can you connect test results with application metrics, logs, traces, and completed transaction outcomes?
  • Cost and operational fit: Can the team run the tests within available quotas and budget, then interpret results early enough to make changes?

A managed distributed option can help when a single machine cannot generate the required workload; AWS documents a solution that accepts JMeter, k6, or Locust scripts. It is not mandatory, and no test platform by itself guarantees event readiness. Choose the least complex setup that can safely produce and explain the workload you need.

Use ScreenshotNeo for visual checks, not load generation

A load test measures capacity and transaction behavior; a screenshot API does not generate that load. For a separate visual check of how a page renders, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page as an image or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. It also reports page verdict and billing headers, and only clean shots are billed. This can help inspect a promotion page, but it is not a substitute for functional checks or traffic testing.

Or skip the browser setup:

One GET request returns a screenshot; replace the sample URL with the page you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python and Node.js versions of the same request:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
  • Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed.
  • An MCP server lets AI agents use tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
