You do not need to test every possible browser, version, device, and operating-system combination.
What is cross-browser testing?
Cross-browser testing checks whether a website works for its intended users across different browsers, browser versions, devices, operating systems, and hardware capabilities. It also includes whether people using keyboards and screen readers can complete important tasks. The goal is dependable, accessible functionality—not pixel-for-pixel sameness in every environment. Which browsers should I test?
Start with your supported-platform promise and the combinations that matter to your audience. There is no practical way to cover every permutation. Use audience information where available, then account for the operating systems, devices, and browser-specific capabilities your site depends on. MDN recommends prioritizing target-audience combinations in its testing strategies.
- Broad baseline: Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects provide coverage across three browser engines.
- Branded-browser validation: Add Chrome or Edge channels when your support promise or feature risks require those specific builds.
- Device coverage: Include relevant viewport and device profiles, especially for mobile layouts and touch interactions.
- Platform-sensitive features: Test on the operating system and branded browser that users will use when behavior depends on codecs, media playback, hardware, or OS integration.
These are selection principles, not a universal matrix or a claim about browser market share. Playwright’s browser documentation describes its browser projects and their limitations.

Can Playwright test Chrome, Firefox, and Safari?
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects. It can also target branded Chrome and Edge channels and emulate mobile devices. But its Firefox and WebKit builds are not the branded Firefox and Safari applications. In particular, a passing WebKit run is useful evidence about Safari-related behavior, not proof that every Safari build or operating-system feature behaves identically. WebKit may lead Safari updates, and platform-dependent capabilities such as media codecs can differ. Consult the Playwright browser documentation when defining what a project actually covers.
How do I test a website in different browsers?
- Agree on support. Document the browser, version, device, and operating-system range the product intends to support. Use audience evidence and product commitments to select priorities.
- Configure browser projects. Define Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit as a starting point. Add channels or device profiles when audience or feature risk justifies them.
- Automate critical journeys. Test user-visible outcomes such as navigation, sign-in, search, forms, checkout, and core content. Playwright recommends testing behavior users can observe rather than private implementation details; see Playwright best practices.
- Keep tests independent. Give tests their own state and avoid one test relying on another’s setup. Isolation limits cascading failures and makes errors easier to diagnose.
- Add accessibility review. Check keyboard-only operation and screen-reader navigation through important flows. A quick pass is useful but does not by itself establish accessibility conformance.
- Validate real-browser differences. Where the feature depends on a branded browser, operating system, codec, or device capability, include an appropriate real environment rather than treating engine coverage as a substitute.
- Maintain the setup. Keep Playwright current and install the browser binaries required by the version you use. Expand or revise the matrix when audience, support commitments, or feature risk changes.

This configuration runs the same suite in the three core engine projects. It assumes Playwright Test and its required browser binaries are installed in the project; adapt test paths and project options to your application.

How should teams include accessibility?
Compatibility means more than rendering: users must be able to operate essential features with the input and assistive technology they use. Include keyboard-only navigation and screen-reader review in browser and device checks. Prioritize meaningful flows—such as reaching controls, submitting forms, and understanding feedback—rather than treating a single automated or manual pass as a conformance guarantee. Do I need BrowserStack or can I test locally?
Local and CI browser installations are suitable when they cover the engines, channels, operating systems, and devices your project needs. Hosted infrastructure is worth considering when provisioning that matrix yourself is impractical. BrowserStack documents Playwright runs against selected browser and OS versions in its supported Playwright versions, browsers, and OSes page. Compare its current matrix with your requirements before choosing; service availability can change, and the cited material does not establish current pricing or comparative value. Does passing a Playwright WebKit test prove Safari compatibility?
No. Playwright’s WebKit build is not the branded Safari browser, and operating-system capabilities can affect results. Test the relevant Safari and OS combination when your support promise or feature depends on it.
