Test translated layouts by capturing the same meaningful page or component states for each target locale and viewport, then comparing each new screenshot with a reviewed reference image. Functional tests can pass while translated text wraps differently, alignment shifts, or responsive layouts break; screenshot comparisons make those visual changes reviewable.
What screenshot snapshots catch that functional tests miss
A functional test can confirm that a page loaded, a button works, or the expected translation appears. It may not catch a longer label overlapping an icon, a heading wrapping onto an extra line, a form field shifting out of alignment, or a navigation menu overflowing at a narrow viewport. A screenshot baseline gives you a visual reference for a specific state and makes rendering changes easier to detect.

Visual comparisons complement functional assertions; they do not replace them. Keep checks for behavior and content alongside screenshot checks for appearance. A changed screenshot is a signal to review, not proof by itself that a defect exists: the difference may be an intended translation or design update.

Choose states that represent real layout risks
Start with high-value templates and states rather than taking a screenshot of every route, locale, viewport, and interaction combination. Choose screens where a visible regression would matter and where translations or responsive behavior are likely to alter the layout.

- Translation stress cases: locales with strings that expand relative to the source language, or scripts with different shaping and line-breaking behavior.
- Required widths: the desktop and mobile viewports where the interface is expected to work.
These are selection guidelines, not a prescribed locale matrix. The useful set depends on the content, components, and supported devices in your product.
Make locale and viewport explicit test variants
Do not rely on whichever language or screen size happens to be active in a developer’s browser. For every visual test, set the intended locale and viewport as part of the test configuration, and make the locale visible in the test or snapshot name. This makes it clear which rendering is under review and helps prevent one locale’s baseline from being mistaken for another’s.

Chromatic documents using Storybook Modes for settings such as locale and viewport, and describes snapshot variants across configured browser or device, theme, viewport, and other test settings. See Chromatic’s Viewports documentation for viewport configuration. Add dimensions that matter to your product, but avoid multiplying variants without a reason: each extra combination creates another rendering to maintain and review.
Pick the test workflow that matches the subject
Use Storybook for isolated components
If your team already represents component states as Storybook stories, those stories can be the units of visual tests. This works well for a shared component library: a button, navigation bar, or translated form can be shown in specific states without driving a full site journey. Storybook describes visual testing as comparing story screenshots against baselines. See Storybook’s visual testing documentation.

Use Playwright for pages and journeys
Use Playwright when the target is a routed page or a user journey whose state depends on navigation and interaction. Its toHaveScreenshot() assertion captures a screenshot and compares it with a reference image. Put the assertion at the point where the intended locale, content, and UI state are present. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison documentation.
Consider hosted review when collaboration needs it
Local Playwright assertions keep screenshot checks within the test workflow. Storybook visual tests fit component-oriented work. Chromatic documents hosted visual review and integrations with Storybook and Playwright; that can be useful when reviewers need a shared place to inspect changes. The documented capabilities do not establish an independent performance ranking, so choose based on how your team authors tests, controls rendering, and reviews changes. See Chromatic’s Playwright documentation.

A practical Playwright workflow
- Set up a stable test state. Start the app or connect to its test environment, choose the locale explicitly, and navigate to the page or interaction state you want to check.
- Set the viewport. Use the same dimensions for the baseline and subsequent comparison; name or otherwise identify the locale and viewport represented by the test.
- Wait for the intended UI. Wait for a meaningful element or state, rather than capturing immediately after navigation. If content changes dynamically, stabilize the relevant data or wait for the final state.
- Capture and compare. Use Playwright’s
toHaveScreenshot()assertion for the page or a targeted element, as appropriate. Keep the scope tight enough that unrelated changes do not obscure the component or layout under test. - Review diffs before updating references. Inspect whether a difference is an intended translation or design change, or an unintended layout regression. Update the baseline only after confirming the new rendering is acceptable.
A minimal page assertion in a Playwright test looks like this:

});
This example assumes your app serves the French page at /fr. Replace that route and the viewport with the values your application supports. Keep captures stable enough to compare
Screenshot tests can fail because the rendering environment changed, even when the application did not. Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same browser and operating environment where possible. See Playwright’s guidance on screenshot comparisons.
- Keep browser and operating-system versions consistent between reference generation and test runs.
- Set locale, viewport, theme, and application state deliberately instead of inheriting machine defaults.
- Wait for the target state before capture. If part of the page is inherently dynamic, stabilize it or mask only that region when appropriate; avoid ignoring the entire page.
- When a test fails, inspect the diff and the test environment before assuming the product changed.
Review and maintain baselines safely
A baseline is a reviewed reference, not an image to overwrite whenever a test fails. For each change, decide whether the new capture reflects the intended design and translation. If it does, update the reference and keep the relevant change reviewable. If not, fix the layout or test setup first. Playwright documents updating screenshots with its snapshot update flag; use the procedure for your installed Playwright version rather than relying on a command copied from a different setup.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Snapshots differ on every run: check for changing application content, an unsettled UI state, or a rendering environment that differs from the baseline. Stabilize the state and compare in a consistent environment.
- A translated page passes functional checks but looks wrong: add a screenshot test for the affected locale and viewport, then inspect text wrapping, overflow, spacing, and alignment in the diff.
- Updating the baseline appears to fix the failure: a refreshed image only changes the reference; it does not establish that the page is correct. Review the new rendering against the intended design before accepting it.
- Too many visual tests are difficult to maintain: reduce redundant combinations and keep representative high-value templates and states. Add a locale or viewport when it covers a meaningful layout risk.
- A full-page diff is noisy: identify whether unrelated dynamic content or a broad capture scope is masking the issue. Stabilize or isolate the unstable area instead of discarding useful visual coverage.

For ad hoc captures or a separate screenshot step, ScreenshotNeo can return an image from one GET request. This does not replace a test runner’s baseline comparison; use your test workflow to compare and review snapshots. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Example request for a French page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/fr -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/fr"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/fr' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
These examples adapt the target URL only; replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. To capture against the same test variants, pass the appropriate locale URL and configure the relevant viewport through the API’s documented options. Visit ScreenshotNeo for product details. Frequently Asked Questions
Can screenshot tests tell whether a translation is accurate?
No. They show rendered appearance; use localization and functional checks to verify translation content and behavior.
Should I compare every supported locale at every viewport?
Not necessarily. Select combinations that cover meaningful layout risks and required screen sizes, then expand coverage when a change exposes a gap.
