First identify where the stream is failing: the fireplace video input, normal end-of-file, FFmpeg’s output connection to YouTube, or the FFmpeg process itself. Each needs a different fix. HTTP reconnect options apply to HTTP inputs; they are not universal switches for reconnecting an RTMP output. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer. If a finite fireplace clip simply reaches its end, use -stream_loop -1 before its input’s -i.
Find the failure point before changing flags
Read the FFmpeg log around the first error, not just the last line. The last line may report a consequence; the first error is more likely to reveal which boundary failed.
| What you observe | Likely boundary | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP input errors, disconnects, or unexpected EOF | Input source | Confirm the source is HTTP and determine whether EOF means a real end or a dropped live feed. |
| The local fireplace video ends cleanly | Finite-file EOF | Loop the input if it is meant to repeat. |
Broken pipe or a write error while publishing to YouTube |
Output connection or muxer | Investigate the RTMP/RTMPS output path and consider FIFO output recovery. |
| FFmpeg exits | Process lifecycle | Determine why the process terminated; input reconnect and FIFO output recovery do not restart an exited process. |
| FFmpeg appears connected, but YouTube playback or health is poor | Encoder or ingest health | Check encoder settings and YouTube Live Control Room messages. |
Loop a finite fireplace file
If the source is a finite local video and the intended behavior is to replay it indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before that file’s -i. This handles normal end-of-file; it does not repair a broken publishing connection.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 [encoding and mapping options] [output options]
FFmpeg command-line options have scope. In particular, -stream_loop -1 is an input option, so it belongs before the corresponding -i. If a command has multiple inputs, place it with the input it should loop.

Use HTTP reconnect options only for an HTTP input
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options address input-side HTTP cases. The documented options include:
reconnectfor disconnections before EOF;reconnect_at_eofto treat EOF as an error and reconnect;reconnect_on_network_errorfor network connection errors;reconnect_on_http_errorfor selected HTTP error responses; andreconnect_streamedfor streamed, non-seekable input cases.
Use these only when the input is HTTP and the failure matches the option. For a genuinely finite source, treating EOF as a disconnect can hide the fact that the source ended. For a live or endless HTTP feed, reconnect_at_eof may be relevant if EOF is a symptom of interruption rather than a legitimate end.
These are not universal RTMP output recovery flags. Keep them with the HTTP input options, before that input’s -i. Option availability and defaults can differ by FFmpeg version; check the installed build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.
Recover a failed YouTube output with the FIFO muxer
FFmpeg documents the FIFO pseudo-muxer as an output-recovery mechanism. It queues packets and uses a separate thread between encoding and muxing; if output fails, attempt_recovery can try to restart it. This is the relevant FFmpeg mechanism to investigate for temporary RTMP/RTMPS publishing failures, rather than HTTP input reconnect flags.

FFmpeg’s documented RTMP example uses this output pattern:
-f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
In that example, recovery is attempted every second indefinitely during temporary network failure. It is an example configuration, not a guarantee that every failure can be recovered or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback.
Understand the queue and packet-loss tradeoff
The FIFO queue lets encoding and output run separately, but it cannot hold packets indefinitely. The documented default queue_size is 60 packets. If recovery takes long enough for the queue to fill, the behavior depends on the overflow choice:
- With packet dropping enabled, as in the RTMP example, FFmpeg can keep moving in real time but some content may be omitted.
- Without dropping, output may block while the queue is full, preserving queued packets at the cost of stalling progress.
The documented default recovery_wait_time is five seconds; the RTMP example sets it to one second. max_recovery_attempts controls the number of successive unsuccessful attempts allowed, with an unlimited default in the documentation. Choose retry behavior with the outage length and continuity-versus-completeness tradeoff in mind.

Combine file looping and output recovery carefully
This illustrative pattern combines a looping local clip with FIFO output recovery. It is not a copy-paste-ready command: input and audio/video mapping, codecs, output details, and the YouTube ingest destination depend on your setup.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i fireplace.mp4 [encoding and mapping options] -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 [YouTube RTMP/RTMPS ingest URL and stream key]
Do not publish a real stream key in logs, screenshots, or shared command examples. Treat it as a credential and keep it out of public material.
Check YouTube ingest and encoder health
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not settings that make a failed network connection recover by themselves.
- Confirm the selected ingest protocol and destination match the stream setup.
- Configure the encoder for CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
- Test before starting the live stream, including audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- During the event, monitor stream health and review YouTube’s messages in Live Control Room.
If YouTube reports an ingest or account/session issue, changing an FFmpeg reconnect option may not address it. Use the platform’s specific health messages to narrow down the problem.

Why reconnect settings cannot guarantee a nonstop stream
These controls address particular failure boundaries, not every cause of interruption. A dead or permanently unavailable source, permanent HTTP error, invalid stream key, YouTube live-session or account issue, long outage, or terminated FFmpeg process can require a different remedy. FIFO recovery can retry an output failure, but it does not ensure recovery from all such conditions or restart a process that has exited.
For process exits, a service manager or external supervisor is a separate operational layer. Its configuration depends on the operating system and deployment; it is not provided by the FFmpeg input reconnect or FIFO options described here.

The HTTP source disconnects before EOF
Confirm the input protocol is HTTP, then consider its documented reconnect or network-error controls as appropriate. These options do not repair the output connection to YouTube.
The HTTP live source reports EOF
Determine whether EOF represents a real end. If the source is intended to remain live, reconnect_at_eof may fit; if it is finite, reconnecting at EOF may be the wrong behavior.
You see a broken pipe while publishing
Inspect the output connection and muxer. For temporary network output failures, test FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options and decide whether a full queue should block or drop packets.
The stream still stalls after enabling FIFO
Check whether the failure is permanent rather than temporary, whether the FIFO queue is filling, and whether YouTube reports an ingest or session problem. Recovery attempts do not guarantee success during a prolonged outage or with an invalid destination or key.

Input reconnect and FIFO recovery do not relaunch an exited process. Diagnose the process exit and, if appropriate for the deployment, handle restarts with a separate supervisor configured for that operating system.
YouTube receives the stream but reports poor health
Check CBR, keyframe cadence, audio/video behavior, and Live Control Room messages. Follow YouTube’s current guidance and test before the event rather than treating output reconnect flags as encoder-quality fixes.
