To compare screenshots of a website with a long table, capture both page versions in the same browser and environment, at the same viewport and page state. Compare the full page for overall layout, then compare the table itself or matching row-sized sections for detail. Use a visual diff to find changes in appearance, and check the table’s text separately if cell values must be correct.
Choose what to capture
The right capture depends on what you need to review. A full-page screenshot shows whether the table has affected the page’s overall layout. A screenshot of the table element focuses on the table. If the table is too tall to inspect clearly in one image, divide it into corresponding row-sized sections and compare each section with its counterpart. The row-section approach is a practical workflow, not a special long-table feature prescribed by Playwright.

- Full page: best for checking page-level layout and the table’s position relative to other content.
- Table element: best when the table fits in a legible image and you want to focus on its layout.
- Matching row sections: best when one tall image is difficult to inspect. Use the same row ranges in both versions and keep each crop large enough to read.
Playwright supports full-page and element screenshots, and its screenshot buffers can be passed to image-diff processing. Its visual comparison documentation also warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors.

A visual diff is only useful when unrelated differences are controlled. For both versions, use the same browser, operating system, viewport dimensions, zoom, and relevant page state. If browser compatibility is what you are testing, capture each browser as its own comparison instead of treating different browsers’ rendering as a single baseline.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Wait for fonts, images, and table data to finish loading.
- Use fixed or repeatable test data when possible.
- Keep the same scroll position when capturing corresponding sections.
- Exclude content that changes on every run, such as a timestamp, when it is not part of the review.
Playwright’s screenshot assertions can wait until two consecutive screenshots match, and a custom stylesheet can filter volatile content. These controls reduce noise; they do not replace deciding whether a difference is an actual defect.
Compare screenshots with Playwright
For repeatable checks, Playwright Test can save a reference screenshot and compare later captures against it. Install Playwright Test in a Node.js project with npm init playwright@latest if it is not already installed. The following example captures a full-page baseline or comparison for the same page and browser project:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('table page matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/report');
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.locator('table').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('report-full-page.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled'
});
});
Replace the example URL with the page under test. On the first run, Playwright creates a reference image. Review and commit that reference intentionally; later runs compare against it and report visual differences. When a page change is expected, review the new image before updating the baseline rather than automatically accepting every difference.

To isolate the table rather than the entire page, use a locator screenshot assertion:

- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
test('table matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/report');
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
const table = page.locator('table');
await table.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await expect(table).toHaveScreenshot('report-table.png', {
animations: 'disabled'
});
});
If you need row-sized sections, identify the same row range in each version and capture that region consistently. For a basic table, a locator can target rows by index; adjust the selector to match the page’s markup:
const rows = page.locator('table tbody tr');
const section = rows.slice(0, 10);
await expect(section).toHaveScreenshot('report-rows-1-10.png');
Playwright APIs and selectors depend on the page structure and installed version. If a locator does not identify one screenshot region in your setup, select a stable wrapper around the corresponding rows and capture that element instead.

Read the diff and verify table content
A pixel diff can reveal visual movement, changed wrapping, borders, alignment, or spacing. Inspect the diff image in context: a highlighted area tells you where pixels differ, not whether the change is wrong. Set an explicit pixel allowance or color threshold only after examining the actual output. A generous allowance can hide defects; an overly strict comparison can flag rendering noise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVisual appearance does not prove that every cell contains the correct value. When cell contents matter, pair the screenshot check with a text or DOM-level assertion. Playwright supports text snapshots as well as image snapshots, so visual and content checks can address separate questions.

Choose a workflow for the review
| Approach | Best fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Manual screenshots | An occasional review or a small number of pages. | Match capture settings and compare corresponding full pages or row sections side by side. |
| Playwright Test | Repeatable checks using local screenshot baselines and pixel comparison. | Keep the capture environment consistent, control dynamic content, and review baseline changes intentionally. |
| Percy with Playwright | Hosted visual review or browser-specific snapshots through its Playwright integration. | Account for its hosted review workflow and treat browser-specific rendering as a distinct comparison. |
These approaches differ in setup, capture scope, repeatability, dynamic-content handling, browser and operating-system coverage, and baseline review. Choose based on which of those matters to your review, and whether you also need text assertions.
Troubleshoot common comparison problems
- The diff is noisy across most of the image: check that browser, operating system, viewport, zoom, and page state match. Wait for fonts, images, and data; remove irrelevant volatile content with a custom stylesheet where appropriate.
- The table appears clipped or unreadable: compare the table element or split it into aligned row sections instead of relying on a very tall full-page image.
- Rows do not line up: confirm both captures use the same data, row range, sort order, and scroll position. A visual diff cannot compensate for comparing different table sections.
- A visual test passes but a cell is wrong: add a text or DOM-level assertion for the value. A screenshot comparison checks appearance, not the semantic correctness of every cell.
- An intentional redesign fails the baseline: inspect the new screenshot and update the reference only after confirming the difference is expected.
- Different browsers show differences: compare captures within each browser separately when checking for a change in one browser. For compatibility testing, interpret browser-specific rendering differences as part of that separate test.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request; use the same URL and capture settings for both versions you intend to compare. For example, capture a page as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/report -o report.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot diff confirm that every table value is correct?
No. Pair the visual comparison with a text or DOM-level check for values that must be verified.
Should I compare screenshots from different browsers against one baseline?
No. Treat browser-specific captures as separate comparisons because rendering can vary by browser and environment.
