Test locale-specific dates and currencies by checking two things in each browser locale: the exact rendered text and how that text fits the interface. Playwright Test can emulate a browser locale and timezone, assert formatted values, and compare screenshots with toHaveScreenshot(). Keep the test data and screenshot environment consistent so a changed baseline reflects a real change in your app.
Why test both formatting and layout?
A date or price can be valid in one locale and wrong in another: dates may put the day before the month, number formats may use different decimal and grouping separators, and a currency symbol may appear after the amount. A different currency may also use different fraction digits. Those differences can make a value incorrect, wrap onto another line, clip, or disrupt alignment.

A screenshot comparison helps reveal visual changes, but it may not explain whether the underlying text itself is wrong. Pair it with a text assertion: the assertion diagnoses the formatted value, while the screenshot checks its presentation.

Build the matrix from the locales and currencies your product actually supports; there is no universal set. Prioritize cases that exercise materially different formatting behavior:

- A month-first date convention and a day-first convention.
- A locale that uses different decimal or grouping separators.
- A currency whose symbol follows the amount.
- A currency with different fraction-digit behavior.
Use the app’s supported market list to choose concrete locale and timezone pairs. The examples below use en-US and Europe/London as an illustrative test configuration, not as a recommended coverage matrix for every app.
Configure Playwright for locale and timezone
Set locale and timezoneId in a project or browser context. This keeps the browser settings explicit and makes it straightforward to maintain separate runs and screenshot baselines for each combination. Playwright documents both global configuration and per-test overrides in its emulation guide.
Option 1: one project per locale
Projects work well when locale runs need to be visible and independently selectable. Add a project for each relevant locale/timezone pair in playwright.config.ts:

});Projects provide clear separation, but more projects mean more test runs and potentially more stored baselines. Use only combinations that add meaningful coverage.

Option 2: create contexts inside a test
Creating contexts inside a test is useful when iterating over locale data in one test. Close each context to isolate browser state and release resources:

});Do not assume that emulating the browser timezone also changes the timezone of the Node.js test runner. If runner-side date logic needs a deterministic timezone, set the TZ environment variable for the test process as well. Browser emulation and runner environment are separate settings; see Playwright’s emulation documentation.
Use deterministic data and assert the text
Render fixed dates and prices in the test rather than relying on changing production data. If output depends on the current time, fix the clock or use stable fixtures. This is an implementation strategy for making failures interpretable: it ensures that a difference is less likely to come from changing input data.

});Those strings are illustrative for an app configured to display them. For each locale, assert the exact date, separators, currency placement, and precision your product expects. A text failure points to a formatting or data problem; a screenshot difference with passing text assertions points attention toward layout or rendering.
Capture and review locale-specific screenshots
toHaveScreenshot() is a Playwright Test assertion. On first execution, it creates a reference screenshot when one is missing; later executions compare the current capture with that baseline. Store baselines under version control and review changed images before accepting updates. The assertion API documents screenshot output options, including PNG and WebP; see Playwright visual comparisons.
Use locale-specific screenshot names or separate projects so a baseline for one formatting convention is not compared with another. If a value fits at desktop width but fails on a narrow screen, include a separate viewport case: checking representative breakpoints is a practical extension of the same visual comparison workflow.

Keep visual comparisons stable
Playwright warns that browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Create and compare baselines under consistent conditions where practical—ideally the same pinned browser and OS/container, viewport, and headless configuration. See the visual comparisons guidance.
- Keep locale, timezone, viewport, and browser configuration explicit.
- Use fixed fixtures and control time-sensitive content.
- Normalize or disable genuinely dynamic page regions instead of broadly increasing screenshot tolerances.
- Review screenshot changes and update baselines deliberately; do not accept them merely to make a failing run pass.
- Keep text assertions alongside visual comparisons so a baseline does not silently bless an incorrect formatted value.
Common failures and what to check
The date or currency assertion fails
Check the app’s locale selection and formatting path, the fixture values, and the exact expected string. Confirm that the test is running with the intended browser locale. A screenshot alone is not a reliable diagnostic for a wrong separator or currency placement.
The browser date differs from runner-side date logic
Browser timezone emulation does not set the test runner’s timezone. Configure TZ for runner-side date logic when needed, in addition to setting timezoneId for the browser context.
The screenshot changes without an intentional UI change
Compare the browser version, OS/container, headless mode, viewport, and other rendering conditions between baseline creation and comparison. Also inspect dynamic content that may have changed. Keep the environment consistent before deciding whether the difference is a genuine regression.

A value passes text checks but clips or wraps
Review the screenshot at the relevant locale and viewport. Keep the semantic assertion and screenshot together: they test different failure modes. Add a targeted viewport case if the issue occurs only at a particular breakpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot test prove that a date or currency is correct?
No. Assert the rendered text as well; the screenshot checks how the value appears, not whether its formatting is semantically correct.
Should every supported locale get its own Playwright project?
Not necessarily. Use projects when explicit, repeatable locale runs are useful; create contexts within a test when iterating through locale cases is more convenient.
