In Playwright, use a frame locator; in Selenium, switch the WebDriver context into the frame and switch back when you need the parent page. Keep the application’s real origin, sandbox policy, and supported browser conditions in place when those affect the behavior you are testing.
What makes iframe tests different?
An iframe creates a separate browsing context inside the page. A page may have a main frame and one or more additional frames; Playwright’s documentation puts it simply: “A page can have one or more Frame objects attached to it.” Playwright Frames

Most page-level element lookups use the main document, not every embedded document. A test that cannot find a control may therefore be looking in the wrong context, waiting for the wrong load signal, or encountering a browser security boundary—not necessarily a broken control.
Structure a useful test around what a user or the parent application can observe: the frame appears when expected, its interface becomes ready, an action works, and the expected result appears in the frame or on the parent page. Include missing-frame, navigation, and error-state cases when they are part of the product requirements.

Test an iframe with Playwright
For normal interaction tests, use frameLocator() to scope locators to a specific iframe. The following example uses Playwright Test and assumes the page has an iframe with id="payment-frame", containing an email field and a button labelled “Continue.” Adjust those selectors and the expected outcome to match the application.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('customer can continue in the payment frame', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/checkout');
const payment = page.frameLocator('#payment-frame');
const email = payment.getByLabel('Email');
const continueButton = payment.getByRole('button', { name: 'Continue' });
await expect(email).toBeVisible();
await email.fill('[email protected]');
await continueButton.click();
await expect(payment.getByText('Details received')).toBeVisible();
});
Playwright’s locator assertions wait for their conditions to be met, which makes an assertion such as toBeVisible() a better readiness check than assuming that iframe attachment means the embedded application has finished loading. Frame locators scope the rest of the locator chain to the selected iframe. Frames documentation
Choose a stable frame identity
Use an iframe selector that reflects the application’s structure, such as an ID or another meaningful attribute. Avoid selecting “the second iframe” unless position itself is what the test is intended to verify; frame order can change as the page evolves. If selector-based identification is unsuitable, Playwright can locate a frame by name or URL and expose it as a Frame object. Page API · Frame API

For example, with a known frame name, you can work with the frame object directly:
const frame = page.frame({ name: 'payment' });
if (!frame) throw new Error('Payment frame was not found');
await expect(frame.getByRole('button', { name: 'Continue' })).toBeVisible();
Use a frame locator when you want the frame relationship expressed in the locator chain; use a frame object when finding or inspecting a frame directly fits the test better. A frame locator without a selector can search the current frame or its child frames, but a locator that matches across multiple frames can fail as ambiguous. Prefer a specific frame selector when the page contains repeated controls or multiple embedded applications. Page API
Test an iframe with Selenium WebDriver
Selenium starts in the top-level document. Switch into the iframe before finding its internal elements, then return to the default content before querying the parent page. This Java example uses an explicit wait for both the frame and an inner control; it assumes the page has an iframe with id="payment-frame" and a button with ID continue.

WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10));

driver.get("http://localhost:3000/checkout");

By.id("payment-frame")));
WebElement continueButton = wait.until(
ExpectedConditions.elementToBeClickable(By.id("continue")));
continueButton.click();
wait.until(ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(
By.id("details-received")));
} finally {
driver.switchTo().defaultContent();
driver.quit();
}
}
}
The explicit wait both waits for the frame and switches into it. After the interaction, call driver.switchTo().defaultContent() before locating parent-page elements. Selenium also supports switching by a frame’s name or ID, a frame element, or an index; the element or name/ID is generally more resilient than an index when the page’s frame order can change. Build coverage around behavior and boundaries
Check the complete user journey
For each important iframe flow, verify the conditions that matter to the user and the surrounding application:
- Whether the frame is present when expected, and what the parent page displays if it is absent or fails to load.
- Whether a meaningful inner control becomes visible or usable before the test acts.
- Whether filling, selecting, submitting, or clicking produces the expected visible result.
- Whether the parent page receives the expected outcome, such as a confirmation or a changed step in the flow.
- Whether relevant navigation and recovery or error states behave as required.
Prefer observable behavior over assertions about incidental implementation details. A frame being attached is not by itself evidence that its application is ready.
Run the browser and device conditions you support
Choose coverage based on the application’s supported environments rather than assuming one browser represents all of them. Playwright documents projects for Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, branded browser channels, and mobile device emulation; its emulation options include device characteristics such as viewport and touch behavior. Playwright browsers · Playwright emulation
For an embedded flow, a useful matrix might include each browser engine the product promises to support, plus the mobile viewport and touch conditions relevant to the interface. Emulation helps exercise configured device conditions; it should not be treated as proof that every physical device behaves identically.

Same-origin rules, sandbox tokens, and Content Security Policy can change what the frame is allowed to do. The W3C CSP specification defines a sandbox directive that applies an HTML sandbox policy to a resource, as though it were included in an iframe with a sandbox property. W3C Content Security Policy Level 3
Best Value
- Includes access code
In particular, a sandboxed frame without allow-same-origin receives a unique origin. Same-origin checks then fail, and the frame cannot access the framed origin’s cookies or other storage mechanisms. web.dev: Play safely in sandboxed IFrames
Do not make a security-sensitive test pass by disabling CSP or removing sandbox restrictions unless that policy change is the subject of the test. Test the integration the application actually supports: visible interaction, navigation, or intentionally designed cross-origin messaging. If direct DOM access is unavailable, that may be the expected security boundary rather than a defect.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| An inner element cannot be found | The test is still querying the top-level document, or it selected a different frame. | Use Playwright’s frame locator or frame object, or switch Selenium into the intended frame first. Confirm the selector, name, or URL identifies the correct frame. |
| The frame exists but its controls are missing | The embedded application has not reached the expected state, or it is displaying a load or error state. | Wait for a meaningful inner element or ready state rather than relying on frame attachment. Check whether the frame navigated or failed. |
| Selenium keeps finding elements in the wrong document | WebDriver remains in the parent document or was not returned to it after prior frame work. | Switch to the desired frame before inner lookups; call driver.switchTo().defaultContent() before parent-page lookups. |
| A Playwright locator matches more than one result | The locator is broad enough to match controls in multiple frames. | Scope the locator to a specific iframe with frameLocator(selector), or identify a single frame by name or URL. |
| A test fails only with the deployed security policy | Origin, sandbox, or CSP rules differ from the local test setup. | Verify the actual frame origin, sandbox tokens, and policy. Keep the deployed restrictions when testing behavior that depends on them; assert through the supported user-visible or messaging boundary. |
| The flow works in one browser or viewport but not another | The test matrix omits a supported engine or device condition, or the interface behaves differently under that condition. | Run the product’s supported browser engines and relevant viewport or touch configurations, then isolate the failing condition. |
Keep the test suite reliable and efficient
- Use explicit, meaningful readiness checks. Wait for the control or state the test needs, not an arbitrary delay where an observable condition is available.
- Keep frame selection deterministic. Prefer a stable selector, name, or URL criterion over a changing positional index.
- Separate frame failures from application failures. When a test cannot proceed, establish whether the frame was found, whether its expected interface loaded, and whether policy permits the interaction being attempted.
- Match coverage to support commitments. Add browsers and device configurations that represent real product requirements; unnecessary combinations make suites slower without adding relevant assurance.
- Use the right assertion boundary. For cross-origin or sandboxed frames, verify what the user or parent application can legitimately observe instead of depending on prohibited direct access.

For a rendered-page screenshot rather than an automated interaction assertion, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one GET request. A screenshot can help inspect the visible result, but it does not replace a test that fills a field, clicks a control, or asserts application behavior inside a frame.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response says which outcome occurred. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot prove that an iframe interaction works?
No. A screenshot shows a rendered visual state; use browser automation to perform actions and assert the resulting behavior.
Should I disable an iframe sandbox to make a test pass?
Not when the test is meant to validate the deployed security behavior. Preserve the relevant policy and test through the interaction or messaging boundary the application supports.
