Owncast Setup for a 24/7 YouTube Gurbani Stream: Playlist and Audio Settings

Owncast can receive and serve a live stream, but it is not a built-in YouTube relay or a documented 24/7 playlist scheduler. For a continuous YouTube Gurbani stream, you need to configure Owncast, an encoder, YouTube Live, and a separate continuous-playback and recovery workflow. For a typical stereo music stream, start with AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for YouTube; if you also send a stream to Owncast, its documentation lists higher music-oriented audio options, including 192 kbps.

What Owncast does—and what it does not do

Owncast is a self-hosted livestreaming server. An encoder such as OBS sends it an RTMP stream; YouTube Live is a separate destination with its own stream configuration. The reviewed Owncast setup and broadcast guidance does not establish a native Owncast-to-YouTube relay or a built-in playlist scheduler. Plan those as separate parts of the system rather than assuming Owncast will loop files or forward a stream automatically.

A 24/7 broadcast needs both a continuous audio/video source and an encoder process that stays connected. YouTube’s API documentation describes a persistent-broadcast scenario in which a broadcast continues while its video stream is not stopped, but that is not a playlist recipe or an uptime guarantee. You still need a way to advance the recordings, supervise the encoder, reconnect after interruptions, and monitor the stream.

Plan the setup before installing

Choose where Owncast and the encoder will run

Owncast can be installed on a self-managed Linux or macOS server, in a container, or through a hosting provider. Its installation guidance lists pre-installed options including Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr. A home server gives you direct control but makes you responsible for its power, network, maintenance, and recovery. A hosted server avoids relying on a home connection, but you must choose capacity and bandwidth appropriate to your stream. The documentation does not specify minimum hardware or provide comparable hosting costs, so do not treat any one machine size or price as an official requirement. See Owncast installation guidance and Owncast’s site and provider information.

Decide whether Owncast is actually needed

If the goal is only to send a prerecorded playlist continuously to YouTube, Owncast may add a server destination without solving playlist automation or YouTube output by itself. Use it when you specifically need an Owncast server as part of your workflow; otherwise, choose and configure a continuous source and YouTube encoder directly.

Separate the outputs and their settings

Decide whether you will encode separately for Owncast and YouTube or whether an intermediate system will pass a stream through. The two platforms publish different audio guidance. Do not assume one bitrate or sample-rate setting satisfies both: verify what is encoded, passed through, or re-encoded at each stage.

Install Owncast and secure the server

  1. Install Owncast using the method appropriate to your host, following the current installation guide. The documented default web port is 8080 and the RTMP port is 1935; the server setup allows port configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Open the Owncast admin interface at /admin on your server, then change the initial admin password and sample stream key. They are separate credentials: the admin password protects administration, while the stream key authorizes an encoder to broadcast.

  3. Expose only the ports your configuration needs through the host firewall or cloud security rules. Keep the admin interface and stream key private. Owncast supports multiple stream keys, so you can assign or rotate keys rather than treating the initial sample key as permanent.

  4. Consider optional storage or scaling features only if your deployment needs them. Owncast can offload video delivery to S3-compatible storage, but this is not required for a simple stream.

See the Owncast server configuration documentation for port and key options.

Send an encoder stream to Owncast

  1. In OBS or another RTMP-capable encoder, choose a custom server destination. Use the Owncast host, RTMP port 1935, and the documented /live/ path; enter the stream key in the separate key field when the encoder provides one. Owncast’s broadcasting guide and OBS guide describe the custom-server workflow.

  2. Choose a video quality the sending computer, network, and Owncast host can sustain. Owncast cautions that unnecessarily high input quality consumes server resources. Use the smallest resolution and bitrate that meet your viewing needs, then test with representative footage and audio before relying on a continuous broadcast.

  3. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds rather than leaving it on automatic. Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility.

Set audio for devotional music

Owncast-bound audio

Owncast’s audio table lists AAC options of 96 kbps (low), 128 kbps (medium), 192 kbps (high), 256 kbps (higher), and 320 kbps (highest). Its documentation says audio passes through unchanged by default and notes that music-focused streams may benefit from a higher setting: “If you’re a music focused stream then maybe go higher.” A practical starting point for an Owncast-bound music stream is AAC at 192 kbps; listen to the result and monitor server performance. This is a source-based starting choice, not a tested prescription for every encoder, recording, or network. See Owncast’s broadcasting settings.

YouTube-bound stereo audio

YouTube’s advanced encoder guidance lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For a typical stereo Gurbani stream, use AAC stereo at those settings as a YouTube-oriented baseline. YouTube also lists 5.1 audio at 48 kHz and 384 kbps, but that is a different channel format, not a reason to select 5.1 for an ordinary stereo program. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Do not merge the two platform profiles

Owncast’s 192 kbps music-oriented option and YouTube’s 128 kbps stereo recommendation describe separate output paths. If you encode two outputs, configure each deliberately. If an intermediate system relays one output, confirm whether it passes audio through or re-encodes it; the result depends on that system’s behavior.

Configure YouTube Live separately

  1. In YouTube Live, create or select the broadcast and configure its live stream output separately from Owncast. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast (event metadata and lifecycle) from the live stream resource (encoder settings and transmission); its API documentation discusses binding the two. The exact API setup is outside the documented configuration guidance here.

    • The MPC Production Experience - Includes MPC Beats Software complete with the essential production tools from Akai Professional
  2. In your YouTube encoder output, use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the stream sent to YouTube’s servers. Its current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps.

  3. Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose video bitrate according to the exact resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s current settings table rather than applying one number to every stream. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations list 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30; those figures are for those specific profiles.

  4. Test the complete YouTube output with representative audio and motion. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators before leaving it to run, and verify that the broadcast is live at the intended destination.

Build the continuous playlist and recovery workflow

The Owncast setup and broadcasting documentation does not define a Gurbani playlist scheduler, automatic file looping, or a restart policy. Treat continuous playback and recovery as implementation requirements that need their own design. The YouTube API’s persistent-broadcast scenario describes a broadcast that continues while its video stream is not stopped; it does not explain how to advance a local playlist or recover from a failed encoder.

  • Continuous source: Select a player or automation system that can advance through the recordings and keep supplying audio/video. Confirm that it handles the end of the playlist as intended, whether that means looping or moving to another item. The reviewed platform guidance does not endorse a particular application or command.

    • With Scarlett 4th Gen, you have all you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
  • Process supervision: Decide how the encoder will be restarted if it exits, and how you will notice a failed source, encoder, or network connection. The reviewed sources do not establish a specific supervisor or automatic recovery setting.

  • Destination recovery: Test what happens if the encoder loses its connection to Owncast or YouTube. Confirm whether reconnecting the encoder restores the intended broadcast, and monitor each destination independently if you are sending separate outputs.

  • Operational checks: Before treating the setup as continuous, run a representative test long enough to expose playlist transitions, silent files, connection drops, and resource pressure. Check the source, encoder, Owncast, and YouTube rather than assuming one healthy status means every stage is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No reviewed documentation establishes a particular playlist application, hardware minimum, or guaranteed 24/7 uptime. A dedicated mini PC is one possible self-hosting option, but host capacity should be selected based on the actual encoding and playback workload.

Check rights for Gurbani recordings and visuals

Verify the rights for the particular recording, performance, and visuals you plan to stream. A devotional or traditional composition does not by itself establish that a specific recording or arrangement is cleared. YouTube for Artists advises: “If you’re planning on using copyright-protected music during your live stream, we recommend coordinating with your label or distributor to avoid any issues, such as copyright strikes.” Read its guidance for music channels and obtain the necessary permissions for the material you use.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Encoder cannot connect to Owncast Incorrect host, RTMP port, path, or stream key; firewall rules may block the connection. Confirm the Owncast host, port 1935, /live/ path, and current key. Check the host’s firewall or security rules and confirm the server is running.
Owncast admin login or broadcast authentication fails The initial credentials were changed, the admin password was confused with the stream key, or a key is outdated. Use the admin password for /admin and the stream key in the encoder. Check the active key in server settings and rotate it if it may have been exposed.
Stream is unstable or the host is under pressure The incoming quality may be higher than the network or server can sustain. Reduce resolution or bitrate, use a sustainable profile, and test again. Owncast warns that unnecessarily high input quality consumes resources.
Audio quality differs between Owncast and YouTube The destinations use different audio profiles, or an intermediate relay may be re-encoding or passing through audio. Check the output profile for each destination and determine whether audio is re-encoded. Use the appropriate platform guidance instead of assuming the two outputs share the same settings.
YouTube does not accept or maintain the intended stream The YouTube output may have incorrect ingest settings, an unsuitable codec/profile, or a failed encoder connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance, use RTMPS where available, verify the key and broadcast selection, and inspect YouTube stream health while testing.
Playlist stops or fails to advance Playlist playback and looping are handled outside the documented Owncast ingest setup. Check the playback source and its loop/transition behavior, then verify that the encoder still receives audio and video. Add and test a separate process-recovery plan.
