Public-system customers should review the utility’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) and contact the utility about concerns; private-well owners need to arrange their own tests through a state-certified drinking-water laboratory. In either case, a test result applies only to the substances measured, so read the analyte, concentration, units, and comparison standard together.
Start with your water source
If your home is on a public water system
Ask your water utility for its latest Consumer Confidence Report or find it through the EPA’s Consumer Confidence Reports resources. Community water systems must deliver a CCR each year by July 1. It reports contaminants detected through system monitoring and whether the system meets state and federal drinking-water standards.

A CCR describes the public system; it does not investigate every household-specific concern. For example, it cannot establish whether lead is entering your water through plumbing inside your home. Contact the utility if you are concerned about water quality or a possible contamination event, and ask what testing or follow-up is appropriate for your address.

Private domestic wells are not regulated under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, so the owner is responsible for checking and maintaining the water quality. The EPA estimates that more than 23 million private domestic wells provide drinking water to U.S. households; its guide associates private-well density estimates with 2021. - Peace of Mind: This well water test kit comes with a 17-in-1 test strip and 2 separate bacteria tests to check for coliform and e coli. Knowing what’s in the water for peace of mind is easy
EPA guidance recommends testing a private well annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids (TDS), and pH. Test sooner after flooding, a well-system repair or replacement, a substantial change in nearby land use or conditions, or a change in the water’s taste, odor, color, or clarity. After a flood or other disaster, ask your local or state health or environmental department about inspection and testing.
Choose tests for local risks and symptoms
There is no single panel that fits every well. Ask your local health department, state environmental agency, agricultural extension service, or nearby public water-system officials which contaminants are known in your area. Use that information alongside the well’s surroundings and any change you have noticed.

| Possible source or issue | Tests to discuss |
|---|---|
| Lead-bearing household plumbing or a service line | pH, lead, and copper |
| Intensive agriculture nearby | Nitrate, nitrite, pesticides, and coliform bacteria |
| Mining | Metals, pH, and corrosion |
| Gas drilling | Chloride, sodium, barium, and strontium |
| Landfills, industrial sites, gas stations, or dry cleaners | Potentially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), TDS, pH, sulfate, chloride, and metals |
| Fuel odor or nearby buried fuel tanks | VOCs |
| Salty taste or road salt | Chloride, TDS, and sodium |
| Staining, scale, odor, or poor soap lather | Tests selected for iron, copper, manganese, hardness, hydrogen sulfide, or corrosion, as appropriate to the symptom |
Some tests investigate aesthetic concerns—taste, odor, appearance, or staining—rather than an immediate health risk. A noticeable change is still worth investigating, but sight, smell, and taste cannot identify the contaminant or establish that water is safe.
Find a certified laboratory and follow its sampling instructions
Use a laboratory certified for drinking-water testing. Find a state-certified lab through your state program, or ask your local health department whether it offers testing or can recommend a lab. EPA does not test individual residential samples on request. The EPA’s guidance is direct: “Only use laboratories that are certified to do drinking water testing.” See EPA: Protect Your Home’s Water.

- All-in-One 26-Parameter Water Test Kit: This comprehensive testing set screens 26 key water quality markers in one simple operation, covering water hardness, residual chlorine, pH value, total alkalinity, cyanuric acid, copper, iron, lead, manganese, aluminum, zinc, bromine, nitrate, sodium chloride and dozens of other vital water metrics. It delivers an easy, reliable method for routine household water quality inspection.
- 158 Test Strips for Long-Term Water Tracking: This kit contains 158 individual test strips to support repeated regular inspections. You can record and track long-term shifts of your water metrics instead of relying on single one-off readings, ideal for families who want consistent visibility of daily water conditions.
- Dedicated E. Coli Indicator Test Included: Beyond the 26-in-1 multi-metric water screening function, this kit adds an independent test strip for E. Coli markers. This extra detection item helps users identify potential fecal contamination signals in tap water, well water and all daily household water sources for complete water profile reference.
- Quick Testing Process & Easy-to-Read Results: Testing steps are straightforward and time-saving: dip the strip into water for 2 seconds, wait for 30 seconds, then match strip color tones with the included reference chart. The fully labeled color comparison card enables accurate visual matching even for first-time users without professional knowledge.
- Wide Compatibility with All Water Sources: Designed to fit nearly all water types, including drinking water, city tap water, private well water, pipeline water, rainwater, spring water, stream water, swimming pools, spas, hot tubs and fish aquariums. The kit also comes with matching pipettes and test tubes to support clean, precise water sample collection for every test.
Contact the lab before collecting a sample. Tell it what you want tested and ask which bottles and procedures apply. Collection, flushing, preservation, storage, and delivery timing can vary by analyte and laboratory. Coliform testing, for instance, requires a sterile container and sterile collection conditions; some tests may require flushing an outside tap first. Ask whether the lab can send a trained sampler if you would prefer professional collection. The EPA’s household wells fact sheet discusses sample handling, but the chosen lab’s current, test-specific instructions should take precedence over generic directions.
Laboratory certification involves approved methods, certification by EPA or a state, proficiency testing at least annually for each method and analyte, and periodic on-site audits, according to the EPA’s laboratory certification information.

Read the report as a measurement, not a blanket safety guarantee
Check that the report names the substances tested and gives their concentrations. Then note the units and what standard, if any, the lab uses for comparison. Some reports compare results with national primary or secondary drinking-water standards. A result for one analyte says nothing about substances that were not included in the test, and a comparison is meaningful only when the analyte, units, and standard match.

If a result exceeds a health standard, contact your public health department for advice and arrange retesting to confirm the contaminant’s presence and concentration. Treatment depends on the contaminant, its level, and the well’s condition. First establish what is present; do not choose a filter or treatment device based only on a broad claim that it makes water safe.

How often should you test?
For private wells, EPA guidance recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrate, TDS, and pH. Arrange additional testing when flooding, repairs, nearby land-use changes, known local groundwater problems, or a change in the water gives you a reason to investigate. For public-system homes, use the annual CCR to understand system monitoring and contact the utility about a concern specific to your home.
