Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo test a generated PDF visually, create it from representative test data, render its pages in a controlled environment, and compare those page images with reviewed baselines. Use a browser screenshot assertion when the thing you need to verify is the browser view; use a PDF-to-PDF visual comparator when you need to verify the saved PDF artifact itself. In either case, make media and color settings match the output you intend to ship, choose a deliberate tolerance, and inspect diffs before approving baseline changes.
Choose what you are testing: the browser view or the PDF file
These checks answer different questions. A screenshot assertion tests how a page looks in a browser. A PDF comparison tests the appearance of the document after PDF generation and rendering. If users receive a PDF, comparing rendered pages from the actual generated file is the closer visual check of that deliverable; a browser screenshot can still test the page or document preview that leads to it.

| Approach | What it checks | Useful when | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser screenshot assertion | A browser-rendered page captured as an image | You need to catch changes to a web page or PDF preview | Pass/fail against a screenshot reference, with configured differing-pixel limits |
| PDF-to-PDF visual comparison | Rendered pages of the generated PDF against pages of an expected PDF | You need to verify the visual layout of the saved PDF itself | Page-level comparison results; the documented library can report missing or mismatched pages and write image diffs |
Visual checks do not prove that required text, links, or document semantics are correct. Add separate content assertions for those requirements. Playwright supports snapshots of values such as strings or binary data, but that capability alone does not extract or validate PDF text.
Build fixtures that expose layout regressions
Use stable, representative input data and deliberately include content that stresses the document layout. A useful fixture set may exercise:

- Page breaks and content close to a page boundary
- Short and long text, including wrapping and overflow cases
- Tables with multiple rows and wider-than-usual values
- Images, fonts, headers, and footers
- Empty, missing, or unusually large values where the product supports them
These are test-design suggestions, not a required fixture list from the cited tools. Select cases that reflect your application’s actual document features and likely failure modes. Keep fixtures deterministic: changing timestamps, random identifiers, remote assets, or other unstable inputs can create diffs unrelated to a code change.
Generate the PDF with the intended media and color settings
Test the same rendering mode that your application intends to ship. Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() API documentation says PDF generation uses print CSS by default. If the intended output should use screen media, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). PDF generation also modifies colors for printing by default; the documentation points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are required.
await page.emulateMediaType('screen'); // Only when screen media is intended
await page.pdf({ path: 'output.pdf' });
Do not switch media modes merely to make a test pass. Align the PDF generation settings and CSS with the output contract, then create the baseline from that intended result. Otherwise a test may reliably compare the wrong appearance.
Set up repeatable visual comparisons
Option A: use Playwright for a browser-rendered page
Playwright Test’s visual comparisons documentation describes toHaveScreenshot(): the first run can create screenshot references, and later runs compare captured screenshots with those references. For example, if a test navigates to a page that shows the generated document:

test('document preview matches its reference', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/reports/preview');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('report-preview.png');
});
Use this for the browser view, not as a substitute for comparing the generated PDF pages. Playwright’s screenshot output depends on the host environment; its documentation specifically notes variation from factors such as operating system, version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run tests in the same environment used to generate the references, and control the browser, fonts, rendering settings, and CI image as far as practical.
Option B: compare the generated PDF page by page
The pdf-visual-compare README documents JavaScript and TypeScript APIs for comparing generated and expected PDFs. It supports page-level results, pixel and percentage thresholds, and optional diff-image output. A simple implementation flow is:
- Generate the PDF under test using the application’s intended settings.
- Keep a reviewed expected PDF as the reference artifact.
- Run the library’s comparison API on the generated and expected files.
- Fail the test for missing pages or differences beyond your configured threshold.
- Retain the page-level result and diff images as CI artifacts so a failure can be diagnosed.
The README lists Node.js 24 or later, Linux and macOS support, and no Windows support. These are version-sensitive package requirements: verify them against the release you select before adopting it, especially if your CI uses Windows or an older Node.js runtime.

Exact pixel equality can be too brittle when rendering introduces small, irrelevant variation; a permissive threshold can hide a real layout regression. Playwright allows a maximum differing-pixel option, while pdf-visual-compare documents pixel and percentage thresholds. The cited documentation does not establish a universal threshold, so select one by inspecting the renderer’s normal output and the level of fidelity your document requires.

- Start with a narrow tolerance and inspect recurring differences before increasing it.
- Use exclusions only for known, intentionally variable regions; avoid excluding areas that contain layout or content you need to validate.
- On failure, inspect the affected page and its diff image. Determine whether the cause is an intended design change, unstable input, environment drift, or a defect.
- Update a baseline only for an intentional change. Review the new rendering and retain the diff artifacts used to justify the update.
Playwright documents snapshot update workflows for accepting intended changes. An automatic baseline refresh without review can turn an unintended regression into the new expected output.
Run the workflow in CI
- Pin or control the runtime, browser, operating system, fonts, and PDF generation settings used for visual tests.
- Load the same deterministic fixtures on each run and generate the PDF or browser preview.
- Compare the artifact with a checked-in, reviewed baseline using the method that matches the artifact under test.
- When a comparison fails, preserve the generated PDF, page-level results, and diff images as CI artifacts.
- Review failures before changing code or updating references; do not update baselines merely to clear a red build.
Consistency matters because browser rendering is environment-sensitive. Playwright’s documentation recommends using the same environment for screenshots and their references. Apply that principle to the renderer and settings used for PDF page comparisons as well.
Troubleshoot common failures
Every run produces widespread pixel differences
Check whether the CI operating system, browser or renderer version, headless mode, fonts, hardware, or rendering settings differ from the baseline environment. Align those conditions before broadening the tolerance.
Recommended Free Tools
The PDF differs from the browser preview
Check the PDF’s media mode and print color behavior. Puppeteer uses print CSS by default for page.pdf(); use screen media only when that is the intended output, and check print color adjustments if colors differ.

The page count or page alignment changed
Inspect the generated PDF and page-level comparison output for changed page breaks, missing pages, or content that overflowed. A PDF comparator that reports missing or mismatched pages can help distinguish a structural page change from a small pixel difference.
A small, harmless change fails the test
Inspect the diff rather than raising the threshold immediately. If the difference is expected and acceptable, make a narrowly scoped tolerance or exclusion decision and document the rationale; otherwise, treat it as a possible regression.
The comparison tool will not run in the project’s environment
Check the selected pdf-visual-compare release’s Node.js and operating-system requirements. The README lists Node.js 24 or later and Linux and macOS support, with Windows unsupported; choose a compatible CI environment or a different comparison approach.

Should I compare screenshots or PDF files for a PDF visual regression test?
Compare rendered pages from the saved PDF when the deliverable is the PDF itself; use browser screenshot assertions to test a page or preview.
Do visual PDF tests verify text and links?
No. Add separate assertions for required content and semantics; visual appearance alone does not establish them.
