For modern, JavaScript-driven websites, Puppeteer is generally the better starting point. It automates Chrome and Firefox and generates PDFs through browser print rendering. wkhtmltopdf can still fit stable, controlled templates and established command-line workflows, but its Qt WebKit foundation is old, its official stable series dates to 2020, and its maintainers warn against processing untrusted HTML. This is a source-based recommendation, not a claim that one tool always produces faster or more faithful PDFs.
How the rendering engines differ
wkhtmltopdf: a command-line converter built on Qt WebKit
wkhtmltopdf converts HTML to PDF using Qt WebKit. Its project status page discusses the age and deprecation of that rendering lineage and advises considering Puppeteer for sites that use dynamic JavaScript. The official downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series, released June 11, 2020, and cautions that distribution builds can differ in Qt patches and behavior. Even builds described as static have system-library dependencies; libc, fontconfig, FreeType and installed fonts can affect deployment and rendering. Project status · Downloads and build notes

Puppeteer: browser automation with PDF output
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library that provides a high-level API for automating Chrome and Firefox, using Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi. Its documented uses include navigation, interaction with complex interfaces and PDF generation. With Puppeteer, a PDF is produced through the browser’s page-printing behavior rather than by wkhtmltopdf’s Qt WebKit renderer. Puppeteer overview

Which is better for JavaScript-heavy websites?
Start with Puppeteer when page content depends on current JavaScript behavior, client-side navigation, or interaction with a complex UI. The recommendation is consistent with wkhtmltopdf maintainer Ashish Kulkarni’s advice: “If you’re using it to convert a site which uses dynamic JS, consider using puppeteer or one of the many wrappers it has.” That is project guidance, not a comparative benchmark. A Puppeteer script still needs a deliberate rule for deciding when the page is ready; navigation completing does not necessarily mean an application has finished fetching or displaying its data.

wkhtmltopdf may remain workable for a controlled, stable template whose HTML, scripts, fonts and deployment environment are known. Its manual offers JavaScript enablement, a delay and a wait for a particular window.status value. Those controls can help with timing, but they do not make an older rendering engine compatible with every modern web application.
Print CSS, page layout and PDF controls
| Need | wkhtmltopdf | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| Choose screen or print styling | The manual documents --print-media-type; screen media is the documented default. |
page.pdf() uses the print CSS media type by default. Call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF to use screen styling. |
| Paper, orientation and margins | The manual documents page and margin controls. | PDF options include format or explicit dimensions, landscape orientation and margins. |
| Headers and footers | Documented in the manual. | Supported through header and footer templates. |
| Backgrounds and print color | Consult the manual’s documented rendering options and verify the output for the installed build. | Background graphics are an option. By default, print rendering modifies colors; use CSS -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact color reproduction is needed. |
| Page sizing, ranges and extras | Documents outlines and tables of contents, along with page controls. | Options include preferring CSS @page size, scaling, page ranges, outline generation, a timeout and waiting for fonts. |

Print media is a common source of visual differences
A page can look different in a PDF because its @media print styles differ from screen styles. Puppeteer’s default is print CSS; to deliberately render screen styles, emulate screen before calling page.pdf(). For color-sensitive output, review the browser’s print color behavior and the page’s CSS. wkhtmltopdf’s manual instead documents screen media as the default and provides --print-media-type to select print styles.
Readiness needs an explicit condition
For either tool, decide what “ready” means for the page being converted. A fixed delay can be fragile: it may waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones. Puppeteer lets you automate interaction and wait for page conditions; wkhtmltopdf offers a delay and a window.status wait. When you control the page, a specific readiness signal is usually easier to reason about than guessing from elapsed time. Confirm how the chosen tool and version handle that signal.

Security and maintenance considerations
Do not feed untrusted HTML to wkhtmltopdf
The wkhtmltopdf downloads page states: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML,” and advises sanitizing user-provided HTML and JavaScript. Treat that as an explicit project warning when considering a server-side or user-facing conversion feature; do not assume that a PDF conversion command is a safe sandbox for arbitrary content. wkhtmltopdf downloads and security warning
Plan for the actual deployment
The documented 0.12.6 stable series was released June 11, 2020. Before choosing wkhtmltopdf, check the package and Qt build available for your operating system, plus system libraries and fonts. Puppeteer’s API documentation describes its browser automation and PDF features, but does not by itself establish a specific current browser-version policy or security guarantee. For either choice, assess the browser or renderer updates, operating-system support and isolation appropriate to your workload.

How to choose: test your real documents
Official documentation establishes capabilities and project status, not universal speed or visual-fidelity rankings. No representative head-to-head benchmark is established here. Before committing, run both candidates against pages and deployment conditions that resemble your own.
Recommended Free Tools
- Pick representative URLs or templates. Include a straightforward page and one that uses client-side rendering, navigation or delayed data.
- Check content readiness. Verify that the PDF contains data loaded after initial navigation, not just the initial shell. Test your chosen wait condition under both fast and slow responses.
- Inspect typography and styling. Include custom fonts, print-specific CSS, background graphics and color-sensitive elements. Confirm fonts are available in the deployment environment.
- Review pagination. Check page breaks, long tables, headers and footers, margins, page ranges and whether content is clipped or unexpectedly split.
- Exercise deployment packaging. Build and run in the intended OS or container. For wkhtmltopdf, verify Qt patches, libraries and font dependencies; for Puppeteer, verify browser installation and runtime requirements for your chosen setup.
- Measure your own workload. Record runtime, memory use, output size and repeatability under realistic concurrency. These measurements answer your performance question; the official pages cited here do not supply a universal comparison.

If your job is to capture a website as a PDF rather than build and maintain a renderer, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and PDF output. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing in headers. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

What the evidence does not establish
The official pages cited here do not establish a universal speed ranking, a current compatibility matrix covering every operating system, or which renderer will be more visually faithful for your site. Those outcomes depend on the page, its scripts and assets, print CSS, fonts, renderer or browser build, and deployment environment. Evaluate the specific workload rather than treating API documentation or project history as a benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer use print CSS when generating PDFs?
Yes. Puppeteer’s page.pdf() uses the print CSS media type by default. Emulate screen first if you want screen styles instead.
Is wkhtmltopdf safe for user-submitted HTML?
The project explicitly warns against using wkhtmltopdf with untrusted HTML and advises sanitizing user-provided HTML and JavaScript. Do not treat conversion as a security sandbox.
