Test the site at narrow phone widths, around its own responsive breakpoints, and on a real phone when device-specific behavior matters. Capture both the first screen and the full page for a representative homepage and article page, then record any layout defects against the exact viewport and rendering conditions. Chrome DevTools is suited to manual checks; Playwright makes repeatable screenshot comparisons possible.
Choose pages that reveal different layouts
Start with a news homepage and one article page. If the publication uses noticeably different templates or modules, include pages that exercise them: for example, a long headline, a large lead image, prominent advertising, or related-story modules. This is a practical test selection, not a prescribed industry standard.

Use the same URLs for later checks where possible. A page that changes substantially between visits—for example, because its content or ads rotate—may produce visual differences unrelated to a code change, so note the page state and capture conditions.

In Chrome DevTools, open Device Mode and select Responsive to enter a viewport width and height, or use its documented width presets. Chrome lists Mobile S at 320 px, Mobile M at 375 px, and Mobile L at 425 px; these are DevTools presets, not evidence of Indian handset ownership or market share. Also inspect the site’s CSS media-query breakpoints. Test just below and above each breakpoint that changes the layout; a page can look correct at a common preset but fail at the precise width where columns, navigation, or modules rearrange. Include portrait and landscape if both orientations matter to the audience or product.
Device Mode approximates a mobile device rather than reproducing every physical-device behavior. Chrome calls it a “first-order approximation”; use an actual phone to validate device-specific issues or uncertain results.

Capture the first screen and the complete page
- Open the target page in Chrome and launch DevTools Device Mode.
- Set the chosen responsive viewport, then reload the page so the capture reflects that viewport from the start.
- Capture the initial viewport. Review the masthead, navigation, lead headline, and lead image—the elements readers encounter first.
- Capture a full-page view as well. This helps reveal problems lower down, such as interrupted reading order, oversized modules, or missing content. Chrome documents viewport and full-page capture in its Device Mode guide.
- Save the page URL, viewport dimensions, browser version, and relevant capture state alongside each image. Use these details when comparing later captures.
Inspect the screenshot for news-reading failures
Review each capture at its recorded viewport. Log the issue, page, and width rather than noting only that the page “looks broken.” Check for:
- Headlines that clip, overlap, or wrap into an awkward or unreadable shape.
- Text that is too small to read comfortably, or horizontal overflow that forces sideways scrolling.
- Lead images with broken crops, missing content, or dimensions that disrupt the story.
- Navigation that covers content or takes too much space away from the article.
- Advertising units that cover the story or displace it in a way that interrupts reading.
- Related-story, subscription, or other modules that break the intended reading order.
For each finding, retain the screenshot and note the viewport, URL, and the visible symptom. That makes it easier to reproduce the problem and check whether a fix worked.

Make recurring screenshot checks repeatable with Playwright
For a site that needs regression checks, Playwright can emulate device parameters and compare a screenshot against a reference with toHaveScreenshot(). The following test uses Playwright’s documented device descriptor pattern; replace the URL and descriptor with the page and device configuration you need.

});Install and configure Playwright Test in your project before running the test. Keep the baseline and subsequent screenshots in a consistent rendering environment. Playwright notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other differences can affect output. A changing ad, timestamp, or live headline can also create differences; stabilize such content where feasible or review the diff with the page’s normal variability in mind.

A screenshot cannot establish that a site works with a keyboard or screen reader. Use accessibility inspections for markup, contrast, and reflow, then manually navigate the page with a keyboard and a screen reader. Chrome’s Accessibility features reference describes DevTools inspection features; inspection should complement, not replace, assistive-technology use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a mobile screenshot prove that an Indian news site is usable on a phone?
No. It shows a rendered layout at the captured conditions. Emulation does not reproduce every physical-device behavior, and an image does not test keyboard or screen-reader usability.
Should I use a standard Indian phone width for every site?
No market-based width is established here. Use narrow test widths and the website’s own breakpoint transitions, then validate on the actual target phone when device-specific behavior matters.
