To give Claude Desktop a browser-based website screenshot tool, configure Microsoft Playwright MCP as a local server. Install Node.js 20 or newer, add the Playwright server entry to Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration, then restart and verify the connection. Playwright downloads its browser on first use.
Before you begin
- Install Node.js 20 or newer, as required by the current Playwright MCP installation guide.
- Use Claude Desktop and its local MCP server configuration flow. You can also install desktop extensions through Settings > Extensions; the steps below configure a local server directly.
- Keep any existing entries in your Claude configuration. Add the Playwright entry rather than replacing the entire file.
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, allows an LLM application to connect to external tools and data sources. Here, Playwright MCP gives Claude browser controls, including a screenshot tool.

Configure Playwright MCP in Claude Desktop
- Open Claude Desktop’s local MCP configuration using the instructions in Anthropic’s setup guide.
- Add this server entry under the top-level
mcpServersobject. If the object or other server entries already exist, merge the entry into them and preserve valid JSON syntax.

}- Save the configuration, then restart or reconnect Claude Desktop if Playwright does not appear immediately.
- Check the chat’s Connectors menu or Desktop Developer settings to confirm the server and its tools are available.
The @latest package reference uses the latest published Playwright MCP package when it is launched. The Playwright guide says the browser is downloaded automatically on first use, so the first launch may take longer than subsequent ones.

Once the server is connected, ask Claude to navigate to a page and use browser_take_screenshot. For example:

Navigate to https://example.com, then take a full-page screenshot and save it as homepage.png.The documented screenshot tool accepts fullPage: true to capture the scrollable page and a filename to save the image. Without a filename, it may return the image inline in the conversation. See the Playwright screenshot tool documentation for its options and behavior.
A screenshot is useful for visual review, but it is not the best way to identify or operate page controls. Use Playwright’s accessibility snapshot and page tools to locate elements and interact with them; the MCP’s browser interactions are structured around those page representations rather than requiring visual targeting.

Choose between a desktop extension and a local server
Claude’s documentation describes two installation routes: a guided desktop extension managed in Settings > Extensions, or direct local MCP server configuration. Extensions provide a managed installation and extension settings; direct configuration lets you specify the server’s mcpServers entry yourself. For browser screenshots, Playwright MCP is the concrete server configuration described here. Choose based on which installation route is available to you and whether the server’s screenshot and browser controls suit your task.

Troubleshoot a missing or failed connection
- Playwright does not appear in Claude: Restart or reconnect Desktop, then look in the chat’s Connectors menu or Desktop Developer settings.
- The server will not start: Confirm Node.js 20 or newer is installed and that the JSON is valid. Check that the
playwrightentry is insidemcpServers, and inspect the server logs for startup errors. - Configuration changes have no effect: Verify that you edited the configuration Claude Desktop uses, saved it, and restarted or reconnected the app.
- Permission or path errors appear: Check the configuration values and path permissions, as Anthropic recommends for extension configuration problems.
- The first screenshot is slow or the browser is unavailable: Playwright’s installation guide says the browser downloads on first use. Allow that initial download to finish and inspect the logs if it fails.
- The screenshot misses content: Ask for a full-page capture when you need scrollable content, and use page tools to inspect whether the site has loaded the elements you expect before capturing.
