Test Indian bank websites at several CSS viewport sizes, including a focused check at 320 CSS pixels, but do not treat one emulated width as proof that a site works on every phone. Combine responsive checks with accessibility, supported physical-device, network, and journey testing. Record the exact conditions and results so defects can be reproduced.
Define what the test must cover
Start with the bank’s supported-browser and device information and the journeys customers need to complete. The available official guidance establishes testing categories, not a universal list of handset models or viewport sizes for every Indian bank. Choose and document your coverage rationale rather than presenting an arbitrary device matrix as official.

Select pages and journeys
Include representative public pages, such as help or contact information and branch or service finders, as well as authenticated journeys when you have authorized access and test credentials. Set up a record for every run
Before testing, record the URL or journey, date, intended viewport width and height in CSS pixels, browser and version, operating system, device, orientation, zoom and text-size settings, relevant accessibility settings, network condition, and whether the run uses emulation or a physical device. Also record the expected result. These details make a screenshot or defect report reproducible.
Run responsive checks at each selected viewport
Use browser developer tools to emulate the chosen CSS viewport sizes and inspect the entire journey, not just the landing screen. At every width, check whether important content remains present and in a sensible reading order, navigation is reachable, controls fit and work, and menus or dialogs remain within the visible screen.
Include a 320 CSS-pixel check
GIGW guidance gives a concrete narrow-width criterion: content should be presented without horizontal scrolling at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels in the cited case. Its wording connects this criterion to WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10. Use it as a useful responsive check, while keeping its scope clear: GIGW is government website and app guidance, not by itself a bank-specific regulation. See the GIGW guidelines.

At that width, inspect whether text, tables, account summaries, navigation, and forms can be used without avoidable horizontal scrolling. Do not confuse the separate GIGW reference to a 256 CSS-pixel height for horizontally scrolling text with a general page-height target.
Record specific failure modes
- Text, labels, balances, or other important content is clipped, obscured, or missing.
- Controls, menus, dialogs, or banners overlap or extend beyond the screen.
- Navigation or form controls cannot be reached or operated.
- The layout introduces avoidable horizontal scrolling.
- Form errors, transaction status, or other feedback is missing or difficult to understand.
- Tap targets are difficult to activate without hitting adjacent controls.
Capture evidence and note the exact steps that produce each issue, including the viewport and browser conditions. A screenshot helps show the visual defect; it does not replace a description of the interaction that led to it.
Check accessibility at the same widths
Accessibility is part of the mobile test, not a separate desktop-only pass. The Department of Financial Services’ banking-sector guidance says bank websites and apps should be accessible to all people and references the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, IS 17802, and WCAG 2.1. It identifies website features including skip-to-main-content access, text-size and spacing options, structured headings, page titles, and alternative text. - Navigate with a keyboard and check that focus is visible and follows a useful order.
- Check skip-to-main-content access, headings, and page titles.
- Verify that controls have understandable labels or accessible names and images have appropriate text alternatives.
- Try text resizing and spacing options where available; confirm the layout remains usable.
- Check contrast and whether important information is conveyed without relying on color alone.
- Submit invalid or incomplete forms and confirm that errors are associated with the relevant fields and understandable.
- Check that status and error feedback remains perceivable and understandable as the layout changes.
Automated accessibility tools can help identify issues, but pair them with manual interaction and assistive-technology checks when required by the test plan. GIGW describes evaluator-oriented and WCAG-derived criteria; it does not make a responsive viewport check a security audit or certify a bank website. For formal compliance conclusions, consult current official instruments and the institution’s compliance team.

Validate beyond browser emulation
Emulation is an efficient way to broaden viewport coverage, but it does not prove behavior on every physical device. Validate important journeys on supported physical device and browser combinations selected using the bank’s own support information and customer-risk priorities. Include orientation changes when a real task calls for them, and test under realistic network conditions.
An Indian Bank procurement document dated February 6, 2026, names mobile UI and multi-device/form-factor testing, as well as WAN, usability, and accessibility testing, as distinct testing areas. It also cites browser developer tools as an example for WAN-related work. This is procurement evidence about one bank’s stated scope, not a universal legal requirement or a mandate to use a particular tool. See the Indian Bank testing-services RFP.

Report defects so they can be retested
For each finding, record:
- URL or journey name and the date tested.
- CSS viewport width and height, browser, operating system, and device.
- Whether the run used emulation or a physical device, plus orientation.
- Accessibility settings and network condition.
- Expected and actual behavior, with reproducible steps and evidence.
- Severity rationale and the retest result after a fix.
Keep formal compliance criteria distinct from team-selected quality thresholds. The cited guidance and procurement document do not define a universal defect-severity scale or a complete reporting template; teams should state their own rationale.
