To detect changes, you also need to schedule captures, keep timestamped images, compare them with a baseline, and decide how to review or alert on meaningful differences. The simplest capture route is Browserless’s REST screenshot endpoint; use Puppeteer or Playwright when a page needs interaction or more control over browser state and readiness.
What Browserless does—and what you must add
Browserless provides managed headless browsers and screenshot capture APIs. Its documentation also describes self-hosting with Docker, REST and GraphQL APIs, and Puppeteer or Playwright connections. The screenshot endpoint can render a URL and return image data, but the documentation describes capture rather than a built-in end-to-end system for scheduling, storing history, comparing images, and sending alerts. See the Browserless overview.

A monitoring workflow therefore has separate parts: trigger a capture, retain it with a timestamp, compare it with a baseline or earlier capture, filter out unimportant differences, and route noteworthy changes to a person or alert channel. You can assemble those pieces with your existing scheduler and storage, or use an automation platform. Browserless’s Make.com guide demonstrates configuring an HTTP request to the screenshot endpoint and identifies visual monitoring as a use case; it does not establish the full comparison-and-alert chain as a built-in feature.
Choose a Browserless capture route
| Route | Use it when | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
REST /screenshot |
You need a straightforward request for each scheduled capture. | Send a URL and screenshot options, authenticate with a token, and receive image data. The endpoint supports settings such as full-page capture, viewport, clipping, and selector-based capture. Screenshot API |
| Puppeteer or Playwright connection | The page needs interaction, navigation control, or custom browser-side waits. | Connect to a Browserless-managed browser and use the client library’s screenshot method. Browserless documents examples for both clients. Screenshot examples |
| Make.com HTTP workflow | You want no-code orchestration around the screenshot request. | Configure an HTTP request to Browserless. Build or connect separate steps for storing images, comparing them, and notifying reviewers. Make.com guide |
Use REST for a stateless capture when the page loads reliably without interaction. Choose Puppeteer or Playwright if you must click through a flow, set browser state, or wait for a page-specific condition before taking the image.

Set up a repeatable monitoring workflow
- Choose the page and capture region. Decide whether the monitor should cover the viewport, the full page, a clipped region, or one element. The REST API supports full-page capture, clip regions, and selector-specific capture; Puppeteer and Playwright can also take screenshots through their browser clients. Start with the smallest region that answers your monitoring question.
- Fix the capture conditions. Keep viewport dimensions, device scale factor, output type, region, and capture settings consistent across runs. Decide whether the page should be captured at a particular URL state, such as a selected tab or a dismissed overlay. Otherwise, a difference in the screenshot may come from different capture conditions rather than a changed page.
- Define when the page is ready. A fixed delay can be useful for a simple page, but it may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Browserless’s REST flow supports waits for events, functions, selectors, or timeouts. With Puppeteer or Playwright, navigate and wait for the selector or page condition that indicates the content you care about is ready. See the REST screenshot documentation and browser-client examples.
- Capture and retain each run. Have your scheduler or trigger make the capture request, then store the returned image with a timestamp and enough metadata to reproduce the run: target URL, viewport, selected region, format, and readiness condition. Keep a known-good baseline as well as later captures.
- Compare, filter, and route differences. Compare each new image with the baseline or previous capture using a comparison step you select or build. Decide how to handle minor rendering variation and recurring dynamic areas before routing a difference to an alert or review queue. Browserless supplies the rendered capture; the comparison policy and notification path belong to the monitoring system you assemble around it.
- Investigate before calling a difference a site change. Check whether the capture shows the intended page and content, and whether the browser reached the same state as previous runs. A blank image, CAPTCHA, access-denied page, or missing lazy-loaded content can indicate a capture or access problem rather than a change to the page itself.
Capture options that matter most
Viewport, full-page, and selected content
For a fixed visible area, use a consistent viewport. Use full-page capture when changes below the fold matter. If only a section is relevant, use a clip region or selector-based capture to reduce unrelated page content in the comparison. The REST endpoint documents viewport size, device scale factor, clipping, full-page capture, and selector-specific capture in its screenshot options.
Image format and quality
Browserless documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output; JPEG quality is configurable. Use the same format and quality for every run in a comparison series. If your comparison method is sensitive to image encoding differences, avoid changing format or quality between captures.

Lazy-loaded content and page readiness
Some pages load images or other content only after scrolling. Browserless documents scrollPage: true paired with full-page capture as a way to trigger lazy-loaded material. If the area you monitor is missing, check whether it appears only after scrolling, then use that option or an equivalent browser-side scroll before capture. For readiness, prefer waiting on the specific content you need over assuming that navigation alone means the page is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRequest and resource controls
The REST API documents navigation options and controls for rejecting requests or resource types. These can help shape what loads, but keep the settings identical between baseline and later runs: blocking a resource in only some captures can create a false visual difference. Consult the API documentation for supported request options.

Handle errors and misleading differences
- Blank or white image: Browserless identifies blank or white results as a possible symptom of automation blocking. Check whether the target site is showing a block page or whether the page failed to render before changing your comparison logic.
- CAPTCHA, access denied, or HTTP 403 content: Treat the result as a failed or blocked capture, not as an ordinary visual change. Browserless notes that CAPTCHA challenges and access-denied/403 pages can occur when a site blocks automation.
- Images or sections missing: The page may use lazy loading. Check the page in a regular browser and determine whether scrolling is needed to trigger the missing content; Browserless documents
scrollPage: truewith full-page capture for this case. - Differences appear on every run: Verify that viewport, selected region, device scale factor, output format, and page-ready condition remain fixed. Also check whether a changing page state or dynamic content is being captured.
- Capture is inconsistent despite matching settings: Use a more specific wait condition, such as a selector or function that represents the content you monitor. If the page requires a click or browser state, move from the stateless REST request to a Puppeteer or Playwright connection.
- Images arrive but no useful alert follows: Confirm that storage, the comparison step, difference filtering, and notification routing are configured in your surrounding workflow. A successful screenshot request alone does not establish that those downstream steps ran.
Plan for repeatability, reliability, and cost
Visual monitoring is only as reliable as its capture conditions and the workflow around the image. Make retries and failed captures distinguishable from real page changes; do not replace a known-good baseline with a CAPTCHA, blank page, or incomplete capture. Store enough metadata with each image to diagnose why two runs differ. Before escalating a visual difference, verify that the page was captured at the intended URL, viewport, state, and readiness condition.

If you want a screenshot API rather than assembling a Browserless capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of the target URL; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup:

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Browserless itself send an alert when a page changes?
The documentation cited here describes screenshot capture and integrations, not a complete built-in visual-diff-and-alert system. Add those workflow components separately.
Can I use a no-code tool with Browserless?
Yes. Browserless’s Make.com guide demonstrates an HTTP request to its screenshot endpoint; image comparison and alerting still need to be part of your workflow.
