Load a legitimate Atari 2600 ROM image in an emulator such as Stella, check that it reaches its normal screen, then try the game’s start input and verify its controls. A game that looks idle may be waiting for Select, Reset, or fire—not failing to load. Stella also lets developers inspect execution with its built-in debugger, but a successful emulator run does not establish that the ROM behaves identically on every original console or setup.
What you need for a basic ROM check
- An Atari 2600 ROM image you are entitled to use. Stella describes a ROM image, often a BIN file, as cartridge data and code loaded into the emulator as a virtual cartridge.
- An emulator. Stella is freely distributed and supports multiple operating systems; its official downloads and user guide cover platform-specific installation and use.
- The game’s manual or known controls, if available. Different games can use different start sequences and controller types.
This is an emulator check, not a guarantee of original-hardware compatibility. If behavior on a physical Atari 2600 matters, test separately on the relevant hardware and accessories.

Load the ROM in Stella
- Install the appropriate Stella build for your operating system, following the official guide.
- Open Stella and browse to the folder containing your ROM if the launcher does not already show it. Stella uses the first ROM folder you select as its default path.
- Select the ROM image to load it as a virtual cartridge. Use a ROM you obtained legitimately; this workflow does not require downloading games from unofficial sources.
- If Stella rejects the file or it does not appear in the launcher, check the guide’s supported-format information and confirm that the file is a valid ROM image. Format handling can differ between standalone Stella and emulator frontends.
Check that the game starts and responds
Observe the launch screen
After loading, look for the game’s title screen, attract/demo screen, or other expected display. Give it a moment to reach its ordinary starting state. An idle attract screen is not necessarily a crash; visual corruption or an immediate return to the launcher is a different symptom to investigate.
Try the game’s start input
Some games wait for Select or Reset; others start when you press the joystick fire button. Stella’s FAQ notes that start behavior varies. If the correct input is unclear, check that game’s manual rather than assuming all Atari 2600 titles start the same way.

Test movement and action
Once play begins, try the expected directional movement and fire/action input. If the image appears normal but the game does not respond, check the controller type and input mapping before concluding that the ROM itself is broken.
Fix controls that do not work or feel wrong
Stella can display controller information in Game Properties or ROM Info mode. Its internal database supplies information when available; for a new ROM, Stella may analyze the image and assume a joystick. If the game uses another controller, change it in Options → Game Properties → Controller. Check the keyboard or gamepad mapping as well.

- 4-Switch Wood Grain Model
Stella saves properties against ROM images. A recompiled homebrew build can count as a new ROM image, so controller settings may need to be applied again after each rebuild. For a rapid edit/compile/test loop, the FAQ also documents command-line controller options.

If a ROM loads but behaves unexpectedly, inspect its Game Properties rather than assuming automatic detection is correct. Stella exposes the cartridge bankswitching type and display format. The user guide warns that some bankswitching types are not reliably auto-detected, and some are not fully supported in the debugger. Verify these settings against the ROM’s documentation when available.

Use Stella’s debugger for homebrew diagnosis
The debugger is optional for a basic play check. For code-level troubleshooting, Stella can show CPU registers and memory, TIA and RIOT state, let you modify registers or memory, step or trace execution, and stop at program-counter addresses.
From a terminal, the debugger guide documents these launch examples:

stella -debug mygame.binenters the debugger before instructions run.stella -break "*($fffc)" mygame.binsets a startup breakpoint before the first 6507 instruction.
Once paused, step through execution or inspect registers, memory, TIA, and RIOT state to locate where behavior diverges from expectations. If you have assembly listing and symbol files, Stella can display labels; the guide notes that DASM can generate .lst and .sym files with its -l and -s options. See the Stella debugger guide.
If you are using RetroArch instead of standalone Stella
ROM support depends on the host application and core. Libretro lists .a26, .bin, and .zip as loadable extensions for its Stella core. Do not assume those frontend extension rules, or archive behavior, exactly match standalone Stella; consult the documentation for the specific application you use.

What a successful test tells you
A ROM that launches, displays as expected, and responds to the expected inputs has passed a practical check in that emulator configuration. It does not by itself prove identical behavior on every original Atari 2600, television standard, console revision, or accessory setup. Stella’s documentation describes emulator behavior and features, not a universal hardware certification.
