How to Test an Android Weather App When the Network, GPS, or API Fails

Test a weather app by breaking each dependency independently, then checking the user’s recovery path. Use local unit tests with fakes for repository, parsing, caching, retries, and error mapping; use emulator or device tests for permissions, location settings, lifecycle recreation, and visible UI. A complete matrix covers connection failures, slow and malformed API responses, every important location state, process death, and the difference between cached and manually selected weather.

Test the dependency boundary, not just a sunny-day forecast

A weather screen depends on at least three systems: a network route, a weather API, and a location provider. Any one can fail while the others work. If tests only load a valid response at a fixed coordinate, they can miss an endless spinner, a crash while parsing an empty body, a permission downgrade that silently changes accuracy, or old cached data presented as current.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Android’s testing guidance calls out “All the possible network connection errors.” That means your matrix should include transport failures, HTTP failures, bad content, and timing problems rather than treating every problem as one generic offline case. Keep the network, location, and API tests separable: a fake location should let you test API behavior without GPS variability, and a fake API should let you test permissions without an internet connection.

  • Repository and data logic: verify request construction, parsing, retries, cache policy, and conversion into stable domain errors with local tests.
  • Platform integration: verify runtime permissions, approximate-versus-precise choices, location services, settings resolution, and process recreation on an emulator or physical device.
  • User recovery: verify bounded loading, an understandable message, a retry action when useful, manual city or postal-code search, and a clearly dated cached result.

Every test should assert both the internal result and what a person sees. A repository that correctly returns a timeout is still a product defect if the UI leaves the progress indicator running forever.

Make the app testable before creating failure cases

Put seams around volatile dependencies

Define interfaces for location, weather transport, clock, and persistence. The production implementation can use the Android location APIs, your HTTP client, and a database; tests can substitute deterministic fakes. Your view model or presentation layer should receive a repository that returns domain results such as a forecast, cached forecast, permission-required state, or a typed network or data error. It should not need to know whether the underlying cause was DNS, a 503 response, or a JSON decoding exception.

A fake weather repository should be able to return a value, throw a selected failure, delay completion, or emit a successful forecast followed by a refresh failure. A fake location provider should return a known latitude and longitude, return no fix, or report that permission or settings are unavailable. Inject a fixed clock so age labels and stale-data rules are reproducible.

Use deterministic fixtures

Keep representative response fixtures in tests: a complete valid response, every required field missing, an unknown schema version, impossible units, a truncated document, and an observation timestamp in the past. Include coordinates near a city boundary and a time-zone boundary. This lets you assert the selected city, local time, units, and date without depending on the device’s actual location or the current weather.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an Android Emulator, a server running on your development computer is reachable at 10.0.2.2. A local HTTP test server at that address can return controlled status codes, bodies, and delays while the app uses its normal HTTP stack.

Build a network and API failure matrix

Run the same forecast request once for each row below. Record the repository result, the UI state, whether retry is offered, and whether an existing cache is displayed. Do not collapse all rows into “offline”: users and recovery actions differ.

Injected condition What to assert
Airplane mode or no route A stable connection error is returned; loading ends; retry and any eligible cache path are available.
DNS failure The app does not crash or retry indefinitely; the message remains understandable and does not expose a low-level stack trace.
Connection refused The failure is mapped consistently with other transport errors and the request resources are released.
Connection reset An interrupted request ends in a recoverable state rather than a blank screen.
TLS or certificate failure The app reports that the secure connection failed and never falls back to an insecure request.
Timeout A defined timeout ends the spinner; retry is bounded and does not create duplicate requests.
Deliberately slow response The loading state remains informative, cancellation works, and a late response cannot overwrite a newer city selection.
HTTP 400 The request or parameters are treated as invalid; retrying the identical request is not presented as the only fix.
HTTP 401 or 403 Authentication or authorization failure is distinguished from a missing network route and logged without exposing credentials.
HTTP 404 A missing endpoint or resource produces a controlled error and no parsing attempt on an unexpected body.
HTTP 409 The conflict is mapped to a stable error and the UI offers the appropriate correction or retry path.
HTTP 429 Rate limiting is recognized; automatic retries are limited and respect any server guidance your client supports.
HTTP 500, 502, or 503 Server-side failure is separated from client input errors; a later retry or cached result remains possible.
Empty body Parsing fails safely and becomes a data error, not a null-pointer crash.
Truncated body The incomplete payload is rejected atomically; partial weather values are not shown as a complete forecast.
Malformed JSON The decoder exception is converted into a stable domain error and the UI offers recovery.
Schema-version mismatch Unsupported data is rejected or migrated deliberately; fields are not guessed from a different schema.
Missing fields Required fields fail validation, while optional fields follow an explicit default policy.
Impossible units or values Values outside the contract are rejected or normalized according to documented rules; impossible temperatures never reach the screen.
Stale observation timestamp The forecast is labeled with its observation time and the app applies the maximum-age policy rather than implying freshness.
Valid response followed by refresh failure The previous forecast remains visible when policy allows, with a visible refresh error and its age.

Assert stable domain errors

Map low-level exceptions and HTTP responses to a small, documented set of domain outcomes, for example Offline, TimedOut, Unauthorized, RateLimited, ServerUnavailable, InvalidPayload, and NoUsableData. The exact names are yours; the important property is stability. UI tests should not break because one HTTP library changed its exception class.

For each outcome, assert that the request completes, the progress indicator is removed or bounded, the error is readable, and the retry action is offered only when it can help. A malformed payload should not trigger an endless retry loop. A 401 may require configuration or sign-in rather than immediate repetition, while a timeout can reasonably offer another attempt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test cancellation and deduplication

Start a slow request, select another city, and then complete the first response. The old result must not replace the newer selection. Rotate the device or leave the screen while a request is active and verify that the previous job is cancelled or safely deduplicated. Repeated taps on refresh should not create several concurrent calls that race to update the screen.

Test malformed and semantically wrong weather data

Transport success does not mean the content is usable. Add parser and validator tests for an empty document, invalid encoding, wrong JSON types, missing nested objects, null values in required fields, unknown enum values, and a schema version the app does not support. Include a response whose structure is valid but whose measurements are nonsensical, such as a wind speed with an impossible unit or a forecast period whose end precedes its start.

Check atomicity: either a complete, validated forecast is committed or the prior valid forecast remains. Never display a mixture assembled from a new broken response and old fields unless that behavior is explicit. Verify that an observation timestamp is parsed with the correct time zone and shown to the user when the data is cached or delayed.

When the API returns a syntactically valid error document, test that the client does not accidentally parse it as weather. Conversely, when a proxy returns HTML for a server error, the app should classify it as an invalid or server response without exposing the HTML to the user.

Exercise every Android location and permission state

Location testing needs more than a “permission granted” check. Run the same weather flow with each state below, and assert the selected coordinate, city, accuracy messaging, and recovery action.

Location state Expected behavior to verify
Permission denied Explain why location is needed, offer manual city or postal-code search, and provide a settings route only when it can help.
Approximate-only permission Use the reduced accuracy deliberately; show a clear result or request a more precise choice only when the feature truly requires it.
Precise permission Use the coordinate to select a deterministic city and time zone; verify that the UI does not claim more accuracy than the provider supplies.
Precise permission downgraded to approximate Detect the change after returning from Settings and update the request and messaging instead of retaining stale assumptions.
Permission revoked while the app is paused Re-check permission on resume, cancel or restart the request safely, and keep a manual path available.
Location services disabled Detect the disabled setting, stop waiting for a fix, and guide the user to enable services or choose a place manually.
No previous location Handle the absence of a cached fix without treating it as an exception or showing a false location.
Stale last location Apply an age or accuracy policy and label the resulting weather appropriately.
Provider cannot obtain a fix Use a bounded timeout, then offer manual selection or eligible cached data.

Android documents that getLastLocation() can return null when location is disabled, the device has never recorded a location, or Google Play services restarted without a new active request. Treat null as a supported result, not an impossible branch. The same API is quicker but can be stale; getCurrentLocation() is intended for a fresher fix and may take longer or fail when conditions are poor. Your tests should cover both choices and the policy that decides when each is used.

Use injected coordinates for deterministic assertions

Inject known mock coordinates and assert the resolved city, forecast request, and time zone. Add a coordinate just across a city boundary and another near a time-zone edge. This catches rounding, geocoding, and daylight-saving mistakes that a single central coordinate will never reveal. Repeat the assertions with approximate permission so the app behaves sensibly when the system supplies a less precise area.

Test location settings resolution and no-fix recovery

Check location settings before starting a request and while that request is in flight. Test enabled settings, disabled settings, and a setting changed by the user during the request. When the settings client reports a resolvable problem, verify that a ResolvableApiException opens the system resolution flow. Test both accepting and declining that prompt.

Declining must not strand the user on a spinner or an empty screen. The app should return to a usable state with manual location selection and, if policy permits, a labeled cached forecast. A provider that cannot obtain a fix should follow the same bounded path. Set a test timeout short enough to run quickly, then assert that the timeout is surfaced as a recoverable state rather than waiting forever.

After the user enables location services, return to the app and verify that it re-checks settings and retries only once or only after an explicit action. After the user declines, verify that repeatedly reopening the screen does not trigger an uncontrolled prompt loop.

Design and verify the recovery UI

Bound loading

Every asynchronous state needs an exit: success, a typed failure, cancellation, or a timeout. A progress indicator can remain visible during a known delay, but it must not be the only feedback. In tests, advance a fake clock beyond the timeout and assert that the screen offers the next action.

Explain the problem in user terms

Use a short message such as “Can’t reach the weather service” or “Location is unavailable,” then provide the relevant action. Do not present DNS names, JSON parser traces, or HTTP stack details as the primary message. Keep diagnostic detail in logs that exclude tokens and personal location data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make retry deliberate

Test a successful retry after a transient timeout, a second failure, and a retry while the original request is still active. Disable or deduplicate the control during an in-flight attempt. For rate limits and invalid requests, test that the UI does not encourage pointless immediate retries.

Show cache age and observation time

If a valid cached forecast is displayed after a refresh failure, show when it was observed or fetched and how old it is. Test the maximum cache age at the boundary: just inside the allowed period, exactly at the cutoff, and just beyond it. Once data exceeds policy, replace it with a clear unavailable state or require a new location/search choice rather than silently presenting obsolete conditions.

Preserve a manual path

Manual city or postal-code search should remain available when permission is denied, sensors fail, or location settings are declined. Test selecting a city, refreshing it without requesting GPS, changing back to automatic location, and handling a city that the geocoder cannot resolve. A manual choice must not be overwritten by a late automatic-location response.

Compare cached weather with manual city or postal-code search

These fallbacks solve different problems. A cache is low effort and can preserve continuity when the network or sensors fail; manual selection is more independent of device location but asks the user to identify a place. Make the product policy explicit and test it rather than choosing one path accidentally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Cached forecast Manual city or postal-code search
Freshness Bounded by the maximum cache age; display observation time and age. Can request current data for the chosen place, but still depends on network and API availability.
Reliability when sensors fail Works without a new GPS fix if a usable prior result exists. Works without GPS, but fails if the search service or weather API is unavailable.
Privacy and permission cost May avoid a new location request, reducing permission friction; stored location still needs appropriate handling. Does not require device location permission, but the entered place is still user-provided location data.
User effort Minimal when the cached place is the desired place. Requires typing and choosing a place, especially after a new install or cache expiry.

Test the decision order you want users to experience. For example, when automatic location fails but a fresh cache exists, show the cache with its age and keep manual search visible. When the cache is too old, explain that it is unavailable rather than disguising it as current. When a user manually selects a city, keep that selection stable across refreshes and lifecycle recreation.

Run lifecycle and resilience tests

Weather requests often outlive the screen that started them. Use an emulator or device to perform these operations during location and network calls:

  • Rotate the device and confirm that state is restored without duplicating the request.
  • Background and foreground the app while a permission prompt, location fix, or HTTP call is active.
  • Kill and restore the process, then verify that the selected city, cache timestamp, and pending error state follow the intended policy.
  • Revoke location permission from Settings while the app is paused, then resume and confirm a fresh permission check.
  • Restart Google Play services between a location request and the weather call; a null last location must remain a handled outcome.
  • Change the selected city while a slow response is pending and ensure the old response cannot overwrite the new one.

Use stable request identifiers or cancellation so a response from an earlier screen instance cannot mutate current state. Verify that restoration does not show a spinner for a request that no longer exists and does not retry a non-idempotent action unexpectedly.

Separate local, instrumented, and end-to-end coverage

Local unit tests

Run fast tests for parsing, validation, error mapping, retry limits, cache age, fallback ordering, and view-model state transitions. Replace real dependencies with fakes or other test doubles. Include property-style cases for missing fields and boundary timestamps where practical. These tests should run without a device, network, GPS, or Google Play services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instrumented emulator or device tests

Use instrumentation for runtime permission dialogs, approximate and precise choices, permission downgrade, Settings changes, location services, rotation, backgrounding, process recreation, and the actual rendered recovery UI. Inject mock coordinates so the test remains deterministic. Do not rely on the emulator’s incidental last location.

Local HTTP integration tests

Point the production HTTP client at a local test server and return each status, delay, malformed body, and timestamp fixture. On the Android Emulator, use 10.0.2.2 for the development machine. Assert that serialization, headers, timeout configuration, repository mapping, and UI behavior work together. Keep this suite independent of a third-party weather service so a provider outage does not invalidate your tests.

Diagnose failures without hiding them

When a test fails, first identify the boundary: did location return no coordinate, did the request fail before receiving HTTP, did the server return a non-success status, or did validation reject the body? Log a correlation ID, operation, and typed outcome, but remove API keys, precise coordinates, and other sensitive values. Capture whether the displayed forecast came from the network or cache and its observation time.

Common defects have recognizable symptoms:

  • Spinner never ends: a timeout, cancellation, or exception path did not update UI state.
  • Old city appears after a new search: an uncancelled or untagged response overwrote current state.
  • Crash on offline launch: empty cache or null location was treated as exceptional instead of modeled.
  • Permission prompt repeats: the app does not persist the declined outcome or re-checks settings without a user action.
  • Stale data looks current: the cache age is not carried with the forecast or is formatted in the wrong time zone.
  • Malformed response reaches the screen: validation occurs after partial state mutation rather than before committing a complete model.

Release checklist for a weather failure matrix

  • Each transport, HTTP, payload, and timing case produces a stable domain outcome.
  • Loading is bounded, cancellation is safe, and retries are limited and deduplicated.
  • Denied, approximate, precise, downgraded, revoked, disabled-service, no-fix, stale-fix, and provider-failure states are covered.
  • getLastLocation() returning null is handled deliberately, and the choice between last and current location is tested.
  • Settings resolution handles both acceptance and refusal, including ResolvableApiException.
  • Cached forecasts show observation time and obey a tested maximum age.
  • Manual city or postal-code search works without location permission and cannot be overwritten by late automatic results.
  • Rotation, backgrounding, process death, permission changes, and Google Play services restart do not corrupt state.
  • Network, location, and API suites can fail independently, so one broken dependency does not conceal another defect.

A weather app is ready for unreliable conditions when every dependency failure becomes a bounded, understandable state with a tested way forward. The goal is not to pretend that GPS, connectivity, or an API will always work; it is to make failure predictable, honest about data age, and recoverable without a crash.
