Make each state happen on purpose, verify that the intended UI has rendered, and only then take or compare a screenshot. Control the app’s data or network response so the test is repeatable; use semantic and accessibility assertions alongside screenshots, because pixels alone cannot show whether a control works or a message is meaningfully exposed.
Build a repeatable test around the state
A screenshot is useful only if the app is in the state the test intends to check. For loading, empty, and error cases, control the outcome that drives the UI, assert the visible result, and capture after that assertion succeeds. Cypress recommends fixtures and network stubbing to keep rendered data consistent, while Playwright documents ways to monitor and modify browser traffic, including network mocking (Cypress visual testing; Playwright network documentation).

- Choose the request or data source that produces the UI state, such as a list endpoint or form submission.
- Control its outcome with a fixed fixture, intercepted response, deliberate delay, or failure appropriate to the case.
- Assert the user-visible state by checking its message, progress indicator, result, or recovery control.
- Capture the relevant page or element only after the assertion passes.
- Compare and review the image against an approved baseline if the goal is visual regression testing.
A screenshot taken while a request is pending unintentionally, or before a render has settled, may record a transient frame. Cypress specifically advises confirming the page has updated before snapshotting. Prefer an assertion tied to the intended UI over an arbitrary sleep (Cypress visual-testing guidance).

Test the loading state
Hold the relevant request open so the app remains in its pending state. Check that the correct progress indicator or loading message is visible, then capture if that state is an intentional design checkpoint. Release the request afterward and assert that the expected content appears; otherwise the test may prove only that a spinner was shown, not that the page recovers to its completed state.

- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
Keep the delay under test control rather than relying on real network speed. If loading is too brief to be a meaningful user-facing state, decide whether it merits a screenshot checkpoint at all. The essential condition is that the test deliberately reaches and observes the pending UI.
Test the empty state
Return an empty result from the relevant endpoint or data source. Assert the actual empty-state copy and any expected next action, such as a link or button, before capturing. Do not treat an empty container or blank page as a correct empty state by default: specify what the product is meant to communicate and what users should be able to do next. Fixture-based data and network stubbing make the result consistent between runs (Cypress visual-testing guidance).

Test the error state
Cause a controlled failure response or failed request, then assert the visible error message and the recovery path before taking the screenshot. Test meaningful in-flow failures as well as page-level failures—for example, form errors that appear after submission. Cypress’s accessibility guidance identifies error states in forms as an example of a state that testing only the initial load or final state can miss (Cypress accessibility-testing guidance).

Choose what to capture and compare
Capture a component or the whole page
Use an element-level screenshot when the component and its state are the subject; this reduces noise from unrelated page changes. Choose a full-page capture when page-level layout is what you intend to verify. Keep checkpoints deliberate: each one creates an image that may need review when it changes.
Capture is not the same as comparison
A visual-regression workflow captures an image, compares it with an approved baseline, and reviews the differences. Cypress’s built-in cy.screenshot() captures images but does not compare them; comparison requires a plugin or integration. Playwright documents screenshot assertions such as toHaveScreenshot() for pages or elements (Cypress visual-testing guidance; Playwright assertions).

When a diff appears, inspect it rather than automatically accepting a new baseline. A changed image may represent an intentional design update or a regression; approve the replacement only when the visible change is expected.

- Use a fixed viewport and a consistent browser and operating-system environment.
- Control dates and dynamic test data so text and layout do not change between runs.
- Disable animations or wait for them to finish before capture.
- Use controlled network responses rather than depending on live data or variable latency.
- Wait for the intended visible state, not merely for navigation or a request to finish.
Pair screenshots with behavioral and accessibility checks
A visual diff can reveal visible changes, but it cannot establish that a button works, that text is exposed meaningfully to assistive technology, or that a user can complete the flow. Add application-specific checks for accessible names, recovery actions, keyboard interaction, and the meaning of status and error messages. Playwright supports ARIA snapshot assertions for checking accessible structure against an expected template (Playwright snapshot testing).
Automated accessibility scans also cannot prove complete accessibility or usability; Cypress describes accessibility testing as a companion to visual testing and cautions against treating automated checks as exhaustive (Cypress accessibility-testing guidance).
Troubleshoot common failures
- The image sometimes shows loading and sometimes content: the capture is racing the render. Control the response and wait for an assertion on the intended visible state before capture.
- An “empty” screenshot is just blank: assert the product’s expected empty copy and action; confirm the stub actually returned the empty result the app handles.
- An error test shows the normal screen: check that the test intercepts the correct request and that its failure outcome reaches the UI. Assert the error message before capturing.
- Diffs change between runs without a code change: stabilize viewport, browser environment, time, data, and animation behavior; these are documented sources of visual-test instability.
- A screenshot command passes but regressions are not detected: confirm the workflow includes an image-comparison assertion or integration. Cypress’s built-in screenshot command alone only captures.
- The screenshot matches but the flow is broken: add assertions for interaction and recovery behavior. A matching image is not proof that controls work.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot endpoint rather than an in-browser test runner, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. A single request looks like this; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These URL captures do not replace controlled in-app state tests: use your test setup to drive the app into loading, empty, or error states before capturing them. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cypress compare screenshots by itself?
No. Its built-in cy.screenshot() captures images; comparison needs a plugin or integration.
Can a visual screenshot prove a state is accessible?
No. Pair visual checks with semantic and accessibility assertions; pixels cannot establish accessible meaning or full usability.
