Playwright Test includes screenshot comparison with approved baselines; Cypress captures screenshots with cy.screenshot() but needs a plugin or service to compare them. Choose based on your existing test stack and how you want to manage baselines and review—not on an assumed speed or accuracy advantage. Whichever you use, stable page state and rendering conditions matter as much as the framework.
Capture is not the same as screenshot testing
A screenshot capture gives you an image of a page or element. Visual regression testing adds a second step: compare the new image with an approved reference, then inspect meaningful differences. The distinction matters here: Playwright Test documents native screenshot assertions and baseline comparison, while Cypress provides capture and relies on a plugin or service for image comparison.

Neither image comparison nor a clean diff alone proves that an application works correctly, meets accessibility standards, or matches every design requirement. Treat visual checks as one part of a broader test strategy.

Create and compare a baseline
Playwright Test uses expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for page comparisons; the assertion can also be used with an element. On the first run, the test runner creates a reference screenshot. Later runs compare the current rendering against that baseline. For example:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example URL with your test target and run the test with your usual Playwright Test setup. The first run establishes the reference; review that image before treating it as approved. When a deliberate UI change should become the new reference, update snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review updated images as a change to expected output, rather than automatically accepting every new baseline.

Reduce noise with assertion options
Playwright documents controls such as maxDiffPixels for managing acceptable pixel differences, and a stylePath stylesheet for filtering volatile content. Use these deliberately: a tolerance that is too broad can hide a real regression, while failing to control genuinely dynamic regions can create noisy diffs. PNG is the default reference image format; naming a snapshot with a .webp extension stores it as lossless WebP.
What the assertion waits for
Before comparing a screenshot with its expected result, Playwright waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. That helps avoid comparing a frame captured while the page is still settling, but it does not eliminate every source of nondeterminism, such as changing data, fonts, or environment differences.

How Cypress screenshot testing works
Capture with Cypress, compare with an integration
Cypress’s cy.screenshot() captures an image but does not itself compare it with a baseline. As the Cypress documentation puts it, “Cypress does not perform image comparison itself.” A visual-testing plugin or service adds the comparison and review workflow. Depending on the integration, teams may manage comparison locally or in CI, or use a hosted service’s review process.
describe('homepage visual capture', () => {
it('captures the homepage', () => {
cy.visit('https://example.com');
cy.screenshot('homepage');
});
});
This code captures an image; by itself it does not create a visual-regression assertion. Follow the selected integration’s setup and test syntax to save or retrieve baselines, compare output, and review diffs.

Stabilize the page before capturing
Cypress recommends waiting until the page has finished changing, controlling API responses with fixtures where useful, using a consistent rendering environment and fixed viewport, and choosing meaningful visual checkpoints. Hide or mask only areas that are genuinely dynamic. Component testing can also provide a more controlled surface for visual checks.

Playwright vs. Cypress: the practical differences
| Decision point | Playwright Test | Cypress |
|---|---|---|
| Image capture | Screenshot assertions capture pages or elements. | cy.screenshot() captures images. |
| Image comparison | Built into screenshot assertions through toHaveScreenshot(). |
Requires a plugin or service; Cypress core does not compare images. |
| Baseline lifecycle | First run creates a reference; later runs compare against it. Update through npx playwright test --update-snapshots. |
Depends on the chosen plugin or service, including how it stores baselines and presents diffs for review. |
| Workflow fit | A direct option when you want native visual assertions in Playwright Test. | A way to add visual comparison while retaining an existing Cypress test workflow. |
These are workflow differences, not evidence that one framework is universally faster, more accurate, or cheaper. The documented material does not establish a comparative benchmark.

Make visual results more reliable
Screenshot output can change with the operating system, browser version, display settings, fonts, hardware, headless mode, test data, timing, and animation. Keep baseline creation and comparison in a consistent rendering environment wherever possible.
- Fix the viewport: use the same dimensions for baseline and comparison runs.
- Control data and state: use stable fixtures or deterministic responses instead of variable live data where appropriate.
- Wait for a meaningful state: capture after the page has finished loading and reached the UI state the test is meant to protect.
- Handle motion and dynamic regions carefully: suppress or mask only content that is expected to vary, so the test still catches important visual changes.
- Choose purposeful checkpoints: compare pages or focused elements at states where visual regressions matter, rather than collecting indiscriminate screenshots.
- Review baseline changes: approve intentional design changes; investigate unexpected diffs instead of refreshing references to make failures disappear.
Choosing between the workflows
- Choose Playwright’s native comparison if you want screenshot assertions and baseline handling built into Playwright Test.
- Choose Cypress with a visual integration if your team already relies on Cypress and wants to add image comparison without changing its test workflow.
- Compare review needs, not just capture syntax: consider where baselines live, how CI artifacts are handled, who reviews diffs, and whether your selected plugin or hosted service supplies a workflow that fits.
- Use both only with a reason: a second framework or integration adds setup and maintenance; it is worthwhile only if it covers a testing need your current workflow does not.
Cypress visual-testing plugins and services
Cypress’s documentation describes open-source plugins that can compare locally or in CI, as well as commercial integrations including Applitools Eyes, Argos, and Chromatic. These are examples named by Cypress, not endorsements. Their current capabilities, supported integrations, pricing, and terms can change, so verify those details with each provider before choosing one.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for taking screenshots or PDFs—not a replacement for Playwright or Cypress visual-regression assertions. It is an alternative when your need is to capture a website from a request or an AI-agent workflow rather than build a browser-test comparison pipeline.
For visual regression in Playwright or Cypress, keep your test framework and baseline workflow. For standalone captures, ScreenshotNeo can remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. Free includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and the example URL with the page to capture. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Keep visual checks in their lane
A screenshot diff is evidence of a rendered-image difference, not a diagnosis of its cause. It does not replace functional assertions, and pixel comparison does not assess accessibility requirements such as contrast against defined standards. Pair visual regression coverage with functional tests and accessibility checks when those outcomes matter.
