Test it as an unlisted encoder-based YouTube live stream using the same sermon file, playback chain, audio routing, encoder and network you plan to use for the public event. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then open the watch page on desktop and mobile and confirm the picture, sound and access all work. An unlisted rehearsal tests the actual live-delivery workflow without making the event publicly discoverable.
Before the rehearsal: confirm the channel and event
- Confirm livestream access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so check well before rehearsal. YouTube’s live-streaming tips outline the requirements.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the event. Set its visibility to Unlisted before it starts. YouTube supports public, private and unlisted visibility for live streams. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the workflow.
- Use the event’s stream settings in your encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes the encoder to send a feed to the event. Do not put it in a public document, chat or screenshot.
For a public event, YouTube advises setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use those as conservative planning windows for the rehearsal too, rather than waiting until the service is about to begin. YouTube live-streaming tips and encoder tips provide this timing guidance.

Run the test through the real playback chain
Play the same sermon file through the route intended for the public broadcast. That means the planned computer or encoder, playback method, audio output and network—not merely a local file preview. YouTube recommends test streams that include audio and movement similar to the planned program. Its guidance does not prescribe a universal click-by-click media-source setup for a particular encoder, so use the controls documented for the software or hardware you actually have.

- A picture that is visible, correctly framed and not frozen.
- Clear audio that is present, in sync with the picture and not unintentionally routed from a microphone, desktop or backstage source.
- Transitions that behave as intended, including the beginning and end of the recording.
- Any unintended material—such as a desktop, notification or private backstage view—appearing in the program.
- Warnings or stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
These are practical acceptance checks for the rehearsal; a clean local preview alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube’s instructions say to check the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream health. Encoder tips
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS delivery and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video; it recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended bitrate examples include 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 1440p at 30 fps. These are recommendations for the stated codec, resolution and frame rate, not guarantees that a particular church connection can sustain them. Choose settings that match the source and test the actual upload connection.
Measure upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and says to allow 20% beyond the primary and backup stream bitrates: “That’s primary + backup + 20% is recommended.” If you are not running a backup feed, account for the bitrate you are sending and leave headroom for network variation. A wired connection to the router can be a practical option where Wi-Fi is unreliable, but it is not a mandatory purchase. YouTube’s encoder tips

Verify the viewer experience and end the test cleanly
- Open the watch page. Check that the event is accessible from the channel and its watch page. Open it on a phone as well as a desktop or laptop; YouTube recommends checking mobile access.
- Share the unlisted link deliberately. Send it only to the people evaluating the rehearsal. Unlisted limits discovery, but anyone who has the link may be able to view it.
- End the stream from the Live Control Room, then stop the encoder. Follow the end-stream controls for your event. If you are recording a local archive, check that file too; YouTube’s encoder tips advise verifying local recording integrity.
- Check what remains on the channel. Review the test video’s visibility and archive settings before leaving it there. Keep the rehearsal unlisted or remove it if it should not remain available.
- Recheck the public event separately. Before the service, confirm the correct event, visibility, title, thumbnail, start time, stream key, audio route and viewer link. A rehearsal exposes problems, but cannot guarantee that the later file, operator, schedule or venue network will be identical.
Copyright still matters for a prerecorded service: a rehearsal does not grant rights to sermon footage, music or other material included in the recording. Check that the church has the permissions needed for the material it plans to broadcast, and review the channel’s applicable YouTube copyright and live-stream rules before going public.
When to use a Premiere instead
Use an unlisted encoder live stream when the goal is to test the encoder, connection, program output or Live Control Room workflow. Use a YouTube Premiere when the goal is to let viewers gather at a scheduled time to watch an uploaded sermon together and chat. A Premiere is not an encoder rehearsal: YouTube creates a public watch page, viewers can set reminders and chat, and the video remains as a regular upload afterward. During the Premiere, viewers can rewind but cannot skip ahead past the live point. YouTube says Premieres do not support output above 1080p. YouTube Premieres

If the recording should simply be available without a shared scheduled viewing, upload it as a regular video instead; a Premiere is optional.
Common test problems and fixes
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is using the server URL and stream key for the event you opened, then check that the encoder is actually sending. Allow time for Live Control Room to receive the feed.
- The stream looks unstable or drops: Check upload bandwidth against the total primary and backup bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Lower the encoder bitrate or use a more reliable wired connection if the available upload capacity is insufficient.
- Picture is present but sound is missing or out of sync: Check the playback chain’s audio output and the encoder’s selected audio source. Test with the actual sermon file and listen from the YouTube watch page, not only at the encoder.
- The encoder preview looks right but viewers cannot open the event: Check the event’s visibility and whether the intended viewers have the correct watch link. Test from a phone and a browser that is not signed into the channel account.
- The rehearsal is visible more widely than intended: Recheck visibility in YouTube Studio. Unlisted is not private; anyone with the link may be able to watch.
- A local recording is incomplete: Confirm the encoder’s recording has finished writing and inspect the saved file before relying on it as an archive.
