To switch sermon videos without ending a church YouTube Live broadcast, keep OBS and the YouTube encoder connection running and change the media inside OBS. Use a Media Source for one video or VLC Video for an ordered playlist. Rehearse every handoff—including the playlist’s last-to-first repeat—and check the incoming feed in YouTube Live Control Room before going live. Neither looping nor a scene transition guarantees gapless playback.
Choose the right OBS source
One sermon video: Media Source
Add a Media Source to the OBS scene that will be on air, select the local video file, and enable Loop if it should repeat. OBS documents Loop as off by default, so check it rather than assuming the video will restart. Also review Show nothing when playback ends if the video is not set to loop; an ended clip can otherwise leave the source blank.

Several sermons in sequence: VLC Video
Use an OBS VLC Video source for multiple recordings. Add files in the order you want them played, leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence, and enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should repeat. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; confirm both settings in your scene. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Operator-controlled scene changes
If an operator needs to choose what plays, organize recordings in prepared scenes and switch scenes during the broadcast. Rehearse the transition style you plan to use—whether a cut, fade, or another OBS transition—on the actual files and setup. The documented controls do not establish that any transition style will be gapless.
Set up and test the handoff before service
- Keep the files available. Put the recordings on the computer running OBS and keep them accessible for the entire broadcast. Add a Media Source for one video or a VLC Video source for a playlist to the scene that will be on air.
- Set repeat and order deliberately. For one repeating recording, turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. For a playlist, confirm file order, leave shuffle off if the order matters, and check Loop Playlist if it should repeat.
- Check hidden-source behavior. In a Media Source, Close file when inactive unloads hidden media and can cause a short delay while it reloads. OBS documents VLC Video as stopping when it is not visible and restarting when visible by default. Choose settings for the way you intend to switch sources, then test them.
- Rehearse the whole sequence. Watch the end and beginning of every recording, including the last-to-first playlist loop. Check picture, audio, scaling, overlays, pauses, and any blank frames. These checks help reveal issues in your setup; they are not a guarantee of gapless playback.
- Connect to YouTube and inspect the preview. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the live event’s server URL and stream key in OBS. Start sending the encoder feed, wait for YouTube’s preview, and inspect it before clicking Go live. YouTube describes this encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Switch videos without restarting the YouTube event
Once live, change the OBS scene or media source while leaving the encoder connected and sending content. You do not need a separate YouTube event for each sermon recording. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to end the broadcast by stopping content from the encoder; for a mid-broadcast change, the approach is to change what OBS sends rather than stop the encoder.

Check the YouTube preview and, where possible, have someone monitor the actual live output during a rehearsal. A change inside OBS cannot prevent an internet interruption, an encoder failure, or a pause between differently encoded files. The OBS controls described above also do not promise universally gapless playback.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the church expects a saved replay from a longer loop, do not assume that archive behavior applies; plan a shorter broadcast or verify the current YouTube guidance for the event. Copyright and permissions still apply to sermon recordings and any music, images, or other material included in them. Use content the church has rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current policies for the channel and event.

Troubleshoot a blank or interrupted picture
- The video ends and the scene goes blank: For a repeating single video, enable Loop. If it should play only once, review the Media Source’s Show nothing when playback ends behavior and provide an appropriate scene or source for what follows.
- A source is blank briefly after switching: Check whether Close file when inactive is unloading the Media Source while hidden. Test the source’s visibility and reload behavior in rehearsal.
- A VLC playlist stops or starts over unexpectedly: Confirm the playlist order, Shuffle Playlist, Loop Playlist, and visibility behavior. OBS documents VLC Video as stopping when hidden and restarting when visible by default.
- VLC Video is not available in OBS: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS’s documentation calls for 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube has no incoming preview: Check that OBS is sending content and that the server URL and stream key in OBS match those shown for the event in YouTube Live Control Room. Inspect the incoming preview before going live.
- Picture or audio drops at a file boundary: Review that exact transition with the same recordings, scene, and settings you will use on air. A looping playlist alone does not prove the handoff is gapless.
