How to Tell Which Git Branches Are Safe to Delete

Use Git’s reachability check against the right destination, review candidates, and delete with the guarded command. Remote-tracking refs and worktrees need separate care.

Git’s safest built-in signal is whether a branch tip is reachable from the branch it was meant to join—not how old or inactive it looks. Update the correct destination, review the merged-branch list, then remove only branches you recognize with git branch -d. Keep remote-tracking cleanup separate, and check linked worktrees before broader cleanup.

What Git means by “safe to delete”

git branch --merged <target> lists local branches whose tips are reachable from the target commit. That is Git’s useful signal for ordinary merged-branch cleanup. The target must be the intended destination: a branch merged into a release branch may not be merged into main, and the reverse can also be true.

Age, quietness, or lack of recent use does not establish that a branch’s work has landed. Git’s merged check evaluates commit reachability, not inactivity or an author’s intent. A listed branch is a reasonable deletion candidate only after you confirm the comparison target and recognize the branch’s purpose.

A branch absent from the list is not automatically abandoned. Squash merges and rebases can integrate equivalent changes without making the original branch tip reachable in the way a normal ancestry check expects. Investigate such branches rather than force-deleting them based only on the output.

Review and delete local branches one at a time

  1. Switch to and update the intended integration branch. Substitute your repository’s destination if it is not main:

    git switch main
    git pull
  2. Inspect branch names, upstream relationships, and merged candidates:

    git branch -vv
    git branch --merged main

With -vv, Git can also show linked worktree paths. Read the output and identify branches you actually intend to remove.

  3. Delete each reviewed local branch using the guarded form:

    git branch -d topic-name

Git refuses -d when it considers the branch insufficiently merged. This guard helps, but it cannot correct a mistaken target choice or determine whether your team considers the work represented.

Avoid using git branch -D as a shortcut when Git refuses deletion. Uppercase -D bypasses the merged-status safeguard; use it only when you have independently decided to discard unmerged work.

For a broader upstream-based preview

Git also provides a preview for deleting merged branches based on configured upstreams:

git branch --delete-merged 'origin/*' --dry-run

This uses each branch’s configured upstream and checks whether its tip is reachable from that upstream. The pattern can cover multiple branches, so inspect the preview and verify that those upstreams are the intended destinations before running the operation without --dry-run. Git skips branches checked out in any worktree, along with other protected cases documented for the command. Do not treat the preview as a substitute for understanding which branches the pattern selects.

The individual workflow compares candidates with a destination you name, while the preview workflow uses configured upstreams and can assess a broader selection. Either approach depends on comparing against the right integration point.

Check worktrees before cleanup

A local branch can be checked out in another linked worktree, even if it is not active in the directory you are currently using. Review git branch -vv for worktree paths before cleanup; the merged-branch deletion operation protects branches checked out in a worktree. Do not remove a branch another worktree is using.

If you deleted a worktree directory outside Git and its administrative metadata remains, git worktree prune cleans up stale worktree metadata. It does not delete local branches.

Prune remote-tracking refs separately

A local branch such as topic is distinct from a remote-tracking ref such as origin/topic. Deleting the local branch does not delete its counterpart on the remote, and pruning tracking refs is not a way to remove local development branches.

To remove remote-tracking references for branches that no longer exist on a remote, use either:

git fetch --prune

or, for a specific remote:

git remote prune origin

Git also documents git branch -r -d for manually removing a remote-tracking branch reference. These operations clean up local references; they do not delete branches from the remote repository.

If you deleted a branch and need to investigate

Git’s reflogs record when branch tips and other references were updated locally. They may help you locate a recent commit after branch movement or deletion, provided the relevant reflog entry remains available. A reflog is not a permanent backup or a guarantee that recovery will be possible.
