CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, and rewritable Blu-ray discs are examples. Each is a distinct format, so the disc and the drive or player must support compatible specifications.
What does “rewritable” mean?
A rewritable disc lets you record information, erase it or overwrite it, then use the same disc for new information. That distinguishes it from write-once media such as CD-R and DVD-R: those formats can be recorded, but are not designed for erasing and rewriting.

Ecma’s description of CD-RW says it gives users the opportunity to “write, erase, overwrite and read CD information.” ISO/IEC 26925 similarly describes +RW data as writable, readable, and overwritable many times.

Which formats are rewritable optical media?
The label identifies a format family, not a universal type of disc. Common examples include:

- Rewritable.
- Cost-effective data management.
- Share large files easily.
- Superior archival life.
- Rewrite up to 1,000 times.
- CD-RW: rewritable compact-disc media.
- DVD-RW and DVD+RW: separate rewritable DVD formats.
- DVD-RAM: another rewritable DVD format.
- BD rewritable media: rewritable Blu-ray discs.
ISO/IEC 29121:2021 includes DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, +RW, CD-RW, and rewritable BD discs among the optical formats in its data-migration scope. The names are not interchangeable: a recorder or player may support some formats and not others.
How does rewriting work?
Several documented rewritable optical formats use phase-change recording. ISO/IEC 26925:2009 specifies +RW discs and says their data can be written, read, and overwritten many times using this method. That description applies to the specified format; it should not be taken as a detailed account of every rewritable disc’s materials or operation.

Will a rewritable disc work in any drive or player?
No. Compatibility depends on the disc format and the device’s specifications. In particular, ECMA-395 notes that recorded CD-RW has lower reflectivity than a conventional CD and requires a CD-RW-enabled player. For DVD, Blu-ray, or other media, check the drive or recorder’s supported-format list before buying a blank disc or trying to play one.
If you need blank DVD-RW discs, confirm that your optical writer explicitly supports DVD-RW; a drive that reads or writes another DVD format may not support it. The same check applies when choosing a player for recorded media.

- Verbatim has been a leader in data storage technology since 1969, and guarantees this product with a limited lifetime warranty and technical support
Is there a standard capacity or rewrite limit?
There is no single capacity or rewrite-cycle count that applies to all rewritable optical media. As one format-specific example, ISO/IEC 26925:2009 specifies 120 mm +RW discs with capacities of 4.7 Gbytes and 9.4 Gbytes. Those figures describe that standard, not CD-RW, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, or every rewritable disc. The reviewed standards establish repeated rewriting, but not one universal cycle count or lifetime.
