Most PCs do not need a dedicated sound card if their existing audio works and provides the connections, microphone input, volume, and headphone performance you need. Consider adding hardware only when you can identify a specific capability your current setup lacks. If sound is missing, quiet, or distorted, check Windows settings, connections, and drivers first; those problems do not by themselves mean you need a new card.
Start by identifying what is wrong or missing
Be specific before shopping. Is there no sound, is audio coming from the wrong device, is the output too quiet, is a microphone input missing, or do you need a connector, channel arrangement, or headphone-amplifier capability that your current PC does not provide? The answer determines whether you need troubleshooting or different hardware.

Check Windows and the physical connections first
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft recommends checking the selected output, volume, connections, device status, enhancements, and drivers before treating an audio problem as a hardware limitation. Follow these checks in order:
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the intended output device. USB and HDMI audio devices can appear as output choices, but you may need to select the one you want as the default.
- Check that the output device and the app playing audio are not muted, and raise their relevant volume controls.
- Check that speakers or headphones are connected to the correct jack and that cables are seated properly. Some systems use green for audio output and pink for microphone input; others label the jacks.
- Make sure the intended output device is enabled. Temporarily turn off audio enhancements if they may be causing the problem.
- Restart the PC and test again. Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide covers these checks and further troubleshooting.
If Windows does not show an output device
A missing device is not proof that the PC needs an add-in card. Microsoft says Windows may fail to detect an output when its audio driver is missing, outdated, disabled, or not loading correctly. Check for a detection or driver problem first:

When dedicated audio hardware may make sense
A sound card is worth considering when you can name a concrete gap that software and setup checks cannot resolve—for example, a required input or output, a particular channel or connection arrangement, or headphone amplification suited to your headphones. A dedicated card can provide specific hardware features, but those features vary by model.

- 1) PCIe sound card, 5.1 stereo audio card
- 2) Easily convert the PC into a cinematic entertainment system by providing a 5.1 3D stereo surrounding sound
- 3) With low profile bracket for 2U case, your best choice of sound card for PC desktop
- 4) 16-bit multimedia digital signal editing decoder inside, Supports 32/64-bit audio processing, recording and playback
For example, the ASUS Xonar DG manual describes a PCI 5.1 audio card with a headphone amplifier. That is evidence of what this particular card was designed to offer, not proof that it fits a current PC, has drivers for your operating system, is available now, or would improve your sound. The ASUS Xonar DG user manual documents the model’s features.

Compare options against the requirement
Depending on the connection or feature you need, compare your existing motherboard audio with a compatible internal card and, where appropriate, an external USB audio device. There is no universal winner established by the available evidence; choose by fit rather than by the assumption that a dedicated card automatically sounds better.

- REFERENCE-GRADE HI-RES AUDIO – Powered by the ESS ES9039Q2M DAC with up to 130 dB SNR, supporting 32-bit / 384 kHz playback for exceptional clarity and detail, far beyond typical onboard audio
- POWER FOR DEMANDING HEADPHONES – Built-in high-performance headphone amplifier delivers up to 350mW @ 32Ω. Easily drives studio-grade headphones
- LOW-LATENCY PERFORMANCE – Supports DSD256 and ASIO 2.3 for high-resolution playback and low-latency audio, ideal for music, gaming, and PC audio workflows.
- PRECISION SOUND PERSONALISATION – 10-band parametric EQ + AutoEq in Creative Nexus add meaningful personalization and offers advanced audio tuning and control
- FLEXIBLE CONNECTIVITY – Coaxial output and optical input for seamless integration with desktop audio setups.
- Connections: Does the device provide the exact microphone, speaker, headphone, or other connection you need?
- Channels and features: Does it support the required channel arrangement or a relevant feature such as headphone amplification?
- Compatibility and fit: For an internal card, check the motherboard slot and case clearance. For any option, confirm operating-system and driver support for the exact model.
- Cost: Compare the price with the specific capability you gain, not with a general promise of better sound.
Microsoft’s guidance explains how to troubleshoot and select Windows audio devices; the ASUS manual describes one card. Neither provides comparative listening tests or measurements showing that dedicated cards universally outperform motherboard audio or USB devices. Treat sound quality as a system-specific question rather than a guaranteed benefit of buying a card.

Make the decision
- If audio works and your current inputs, outputs, volume, and headphone performance meet your needs, there is no identified reason to add a card.
- If audio is missing or malfunctioning, work through Windows routing, settings, connections, and driver checks before buying hardware.
- If you have identified a specific missing capability, compare compatible devices for that requirement and verify fit, connections, OS support, and drivers before purchasing.
