Those checks separate a configuration problem from a keyboard-input or operating-system integration problem. If snippets expand when you did not expect them to, identify the exact trigger and inspect only the match or package that provides it.
Diagnose the failure in order

Check whether Espanso is running
Open a terminal and run
espanso status. If the daemon is not running, checkespanso logfor errors, then tryespanso restart. These commands are listed in the Espanso command reference.As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Confirm that the match is loaded
Run
espanso match listand look for the exact trigger. If the snippet comes from a package, runespanso package listto identify the package, andespanso path packagesto locate its files. Espanso documents packages as YAML-based configuration; see its package documentation.Quick wins for a faster PC:

Run the match without typing it
Use
espanso match exec -t ":trigger", replacing:triggerwith the exact configured trigger. This checks whether Espanso can execute the match through its CLI. A successful CLI test does not prove keyboard-triggered expansion works; it narrows the remaining investigation to live keyboard input, the active application, permissions, or service integration.#1 Best Overall

Compare the results in a plain text field
Try the trigger in a simple text editor or another plain text field, then compare that result with the CLI test. If the match is listed and CLI execution works but typing does not expand it, focus on keyboard capture and platform integration rather than rewriting the match. If the match is absent or CLI execution fails, inspect the match configuration or package first.

Inspect package configuration before changing it
For a package-provided snippet, open the relevant YAML files and review any recent edits or package updates. Check the package list and package path before uninstalling or reinstalling anything; preserve local changes you may need. The package documentation lists package-related commands, including update and uninstall options.

If Espanso expands a snippet unexpectedly
Write down the text you typed, the expansion that appeared, and the application in which it happened. Find the exact trigger in the loaded matches and determine whether it belongs to a package. Then temporarily disable or edit only the suspect match using your normal configuration method, and test again in the same application.

Platform-specific failures need version-specific troubleshooting
Keyboard expansion can fail even when the match itself is valid. Record your operating-system version or build and Espanso version, and distinguish a service-startup problem from missing permission prompts or failure to capture typed input. Individual issue reports are useful clues, not universal fixes:

A macOS report for Espanso 2.3.0 on macOS 15.7.2 says the user had granted Accessibility approval but still experienced failure; leaving

Before trying a workaround, verify that your OS and Espanso versions match the report. Prefer current official troubleshooting guidance for permission changes or low-level input settings, since platform behavior may change.

Espanso documents optional statistics tracking for frequently used triggers, introduced in v2.4.0 and disabled by default. Statistics may help identify which triggers are being used, but they do not diagnose whether Espanso is capturing keyboard input.
