To make a sound card the default playback device, select it under Windows sound output settings. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound and choose the device under Output. In Windows 10, open the classic Sound control panel and set the device as default on the Playback tab.
Set the default output in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the sound card, speakers, or headphones you want Windows to use. Microsoft says selecting the device also sets it as the default: Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide.
The device name may identify an onboard audio chipset, a USB sound device, or an HDMI-connected display. Choose the endpoint physically connected to the speakers or headphones you want to hear; an HDMI display without speakers may appear as an output but produce no audible sound.

Set the default output in Windows 10
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
- On the Playback tab, right-click the intended output device and choose Set as Default Device.
- Select OK.
Microsoft documents this Control Panel route for Windows 10 in its audio troubleshooting guide. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this procedure describes its settings, not ongoing support status.

Use the classic Playback tab from either version
If you need the traditional list of playback devices, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings > Playback. Right-click the desired device and choose Set as default, then confirm if prompted. Microsoft also documents this route in its guide to fixing sound or audio problems. The exact labels can vary with Windows updates and device software.

If the sound card or output device is missing
A device absent from the output list may be disabled, undetected, or affected by a driver problem. Check whether Windows sees it before considering hardware replacement.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the audio device is listed but disabled, use the available enable option.
- If it is not listed, use Device Manager’s option to show hidden devices, then scan for hardware changes.
- If Windows still does not detect it, get a driver intended for your Windows version from the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support site, install it, and restart the computer.
These checks follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for missing audio devices. Use the manufacturer’s driver rather than assuming a generic download will suit the device.

If the selected device is silent
Changing the default only chooses the system’s playback endpoint. It does not unmute a device, restore a driver, or ensure that every application is sending sound to that endpoint.

- Check the endpoint: Confirm the selected output is the sound card or device connected to the speakers or headphones you intend to use.
- Check mute and volume: Make sure the device is not muted and its volume is raised.
- Check whether the device is enabled: Open its sound properties and verify it is enabled. Microsoft includes this check in its Windows 11 sound troubleshooting steps.
- Test audio enhancements: If the device is enabled and still silent, try turning audio enhancements off; they can interfere with playback on some systems, according to Microsoft’s guidance at the same troubleshooting link.
- Separate a system problem from an app problem: Check whether other system audio works. If it does, inspect the affected app’s own audio or output controls; the Windows default-device setting alone does not establish what that app is using.
- Revisit drivers: If the device remains silent across the system, investigate its driver using the manufacturer’s support resource.
