Is Espanso safe to use for passwords and sensitive information? It can expand text without keeping a history of everything you type, according to the Espanso project, but that does not make it a secure place to store credentials. Its matches are editable configuration files, and some expansion methods use the system clipboard. For reusable passwords, recovery codes, private keys, and other high-impact secrets, use a dedicated password manager instead.
Does Espanso log everything you type?
Espanso must detect key presses to recognize a trigger and replace it with a match. The project’s security page distinguishes that input detection from recording a history: “While espanso detects key presses as a keylogger would do, it doesn’t log anything.” That is the project’s own statement, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every possible version and setup behaves identically. Espanso’s security documentation says it relates to version 1 and that its description of internals is only a “good approximation” for version 2.

The same document describes a limited in-memory buffer for matching: the last five characters by default for regular matches and up to 30 characters for regex matches. Those are details in version-1-era documentation, not verified guarantees for current releases. They should not be treated as proof that sensitive input is never exposed to other software or never retained elsewhere on a device.
Can you store passwords in Espanso?
Espanso uses editable, file-based match configuration. Its Getting Started guide demonstrates YAML match files, and the project describes Espanso as local and without tracking in its repository. Those project descriptions do not establish that credentials saved in match files are encrypted at rest. Anyone or anything able to read the relevant file—or a copy in a synced folder, backup, or repository—may be able to read the stored text.

That makes Espanso a poor place for reusable account passwords, recovery codes, private keys, payment details, or similarly consequential secrets. A dedicated password manager is designed for credential storage; Espanso’s documented match files are not presented as a secure credential vault. Do not assume that putting a secret in a snippet gives it password-manager protections.
What happens to the clipboard during expansion?
Espanso’s configuration schema provides clipboard, inject, and auto backends. The development-branch configuration schema describes auto as choosing an appropriate mechanism; by default, it uses the clipboard for matches longer than 100 characters. It also describes preserve_keyboard as an attempt to preserve the clipboard’s prior content after expansion.

This is a configurable implementation detail, not a promise that every expansion uses the clipboard or that clipboard contents are always immediately cleared or restored. Clipboard behavior can expose expanded text to other software that reads the clipboard, depending on the operating system and setup. If you use Espanso for lower-risk private snippets, review the backend and clipboard-related settings for your installed version and avoid assuming the clipboard is a protected channel.
Does Espanso work in password fields?
There is no universal answer established by the cited material. A historical Espanso v0.5.4 release note says macOS SecureInput can block text expanders from detecting input in sensitive areas such as password fields, and that Espanso may notify and log when an app triggers SecureInput. This is a version-specific historical note, not confirmation of current behavior across macOS versions or other platforms. The v0.5.4 release note should not be read as a guarantee that Espanso either will or will not work in every password field today.

How to reduce exposure if you use Espanso for private text
- Keep high-impact secrets out of matches. Store reusable credentials and recovery material in a dedicated password manager rather than plaintext snippets.
- Protect the files and their copies. Secure your operating-system account, and do not put secret-bearing configuration in an unencrypted or broadly shared sync location, backup, or repository.
- Limit where expansions can happen. Use app-specific configuration or toggle Espanso off in sensitive workflows. The official guide describes toggling it off to prevent unwanted expansions.
- Check your expansion method. Where clipboard exposure matters, review the backend and related settings for your installed version; configuration options and behavior can change.
