Wi-Fi 8 could help if your main problem is unreliable wireless service in difficult conditions, but it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade. It is still in development, and there is no independent, representative measurement of how much a typical home would gain. First identify whether the bottleneck is your internet service, Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or device support; then decide whether waiting for Wi-Fi 8 makes sense.
What Wi-Fi 8 is designed to improve
Wi-Fi 8 is based on IEEE project P802.11bn. Its central aim is more reliable performance when wireless conditions are difficult, including congestion, interference, movement between access points, and devices operating near the edge of coverage. Qualcomm describes that goal in its Wi-Fi 8 white paper; TP-Link also outlines these intended use cases in its Wi-Fi 8 overview.

These are design goals and developing capabilities, not proof that every Wi-Fi 8 router will fix every home’s dead zones or slowdowns. The expected benefit depends on the router, the client devices, the home’s layout and interference, and whether the features aimed at the problem are supported at both ends.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Reliability is not the same as a higher speed-test result
A more stable connection can matter even if a speed test’s top result barely changes: fewer interruptions or better performance under load may be more useful than a higher peak. Conversely, if your present connection is already stable and fast enough for the devices and activities in your home, the available sources do not support promising a noticeable improvement from upgrading.

Do not treat a router’s maximum PHY rate as expected internet throughput. TP-Link lists the same typical maximums for Wi-Fi 8 and Wi-Fi 7—320 MHz maximum channel bandwidth, 46 Gbps maximum PHY rate, and 4096-QAM—on its overview page. Those vendor-listed maxima are not the speed a single device should expect in a household or an internet speed test. The same page also claims up to 30% higher throughput and up to 24% better interference handling in vendor lab results; TP-Link does not establish those figures as independently verified, typical home gains.
Check what is actually limiting your network
Diagnose the symptom before shopping. A router upgrade cannot repair a slow internet service, and a newer wireless generation does not automatically solve poor placement or inadequate coverage.

- Test whether the internet service is the bottleneck. If wired devices are also slow, investigate the ISP plan, modem, or service before replacing Wi-Fi equipment. A faster wireless router cannot increase the speed delivered by a constrained internet connection.
- Map where the problem occurs. If service is poor only in particular rooms, distance, walls, floors, or access-point placement may be the main issue. Consider repositioning the router, adding a wired access point, or using a mesh system with suitable node placement and backhaul.
- Check when instability happens. If several devices falter when the network is busy or nearby wireless activity is high, congestion or interference may be relevant. Wi-Fi 8’s reliability goals could be more pertinent here, but actual benefit depends on supported features and real-world implementation.
- Look at roaming behavior. If devices struggle while moving between access points, identify whether the problem is handoff, coverage overlap, or a particular client. A new router alone may not resolve an issue involving multiple access points or unsupported client behavior.
- Compare results with the home’s needs. Note which devices and activities are affected, whether wired connections work normally, and whether the problem is confined to one area or appears across the home. These observations help distinguish a coverage project from an internet-service or capacity problem.
Match the problem to the upgrade path
| What you observe | First thing to investigate | When Wi-Fi 8 may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Wired and wireless devices are both slow | ISP service, modem, or internet plan | A Wi-Fi upgrade is unlikely to address the underlying service bottleneck. |
| Only distant rooms have weak or unreliable Wi-Fi | Router placement, building layout, a wired access point, or mesh coverage and backhaul | Consider it only if the proposed equipment and supported features address the actual coverage issue; a newer generation alone does not guarantee better reach. |
| Several devices become unstable during busy periods or interference | Network load, local wireless conditions, and the capabilities of both router and clients | Its reliability focus may fit this problem, but outcomes for a typical home have not been independently established. |
| Connections drop or degrade while moving between access points | Access-point placement, roaming behavior, and client support | Potentially relevant to multi-access-point coordination, but verify that the implementation and client devices support the needed capabilities. |
| Current coverage and performance meet household needs | No upgrade may be necessary | Waiting lets specifications, certification, independent testing, and client support mature. |
Wi-Fi 8 is not finalized yet
As of the IEEE timeline checked for this article, P802.11bn was listed at draft D2.0. The timeline showed a 77% result for the D2.0 draft ballot dated September 2, 2026, with further milestones forecast into 2028. Those are project schedule estimates, not guaranteed dates for a final standard or retail availability. The IEEE 802.11 project timeline is the place to check the project’s status.

IEEE lists 802.11be-2024 (Wi-Fi 7) as published on its 802.11 working group page. That makes Wi-Fi 7 a more mature current comparison, though results still depend on the equipment and home. In a specific example—not a Wi-Fi 8 comparison—the Wireless Broadband Alliance reports a Wi-Fi 7 MLO Phase 2 trial in a 4,500-square-foot single-family home with walls, active interference, and multiple-device traffic, conducted with CableLabs and Intel. The WBA trial report describes that test; it should not be read as a universal prediction for homes or as evidence of Wi-Fi 8 performance.

Announcements are not proof of availability or final certification
TP-Link announced an Archer 8 router platform target for October 2026 and a Deco 8 mesh-system target for Q1 2027. These are vendor roadmap windows, not confirmation of local stock, final specifications, certification, or compatibility. Check the company’s announcement and current regional product information before making a purchase decision.
What to verify before buying
- Router and client support: Check the exact Wi-Fi generation and features supported by the router and the phones, computers, televisions, and other important devices. A new router does not make older clients support newer features. The sources do not establish a complete Wi-Fi 8 client-compatibility matrix.
- Coverage design: Decide whether one router is appropriate or whether you need a mesh system or additional access point. Check node placement, building obstacles, and whether wired backhaul is possible.
- Wired capacity: Compare WAN and LAN port speeds, port count, and backhaul needs with your internet plan and local-network uses. Wireless generation alone does not determine the capacity of the wired links.
- Local rules and product maturity: Confirm regional spectrum rules, the product’s certification and final specifications, firmware support, warranty, and vendor support. Do not assume every announced feature or configuration will be available in every region.
- Total upgrade cost: Compare replacing one router with replacing a full mesh system, adding a wired access point, or choosing a current Wi-Fi 7 option. The least expensive way to solve the diagnosed problem may not be a full generation upgrade.
Should you upgrade now or wait?
Consider current Wi-Fi 7 or a coverage fix now
If you have a specific, immediate problem, compare currently available equipment against that problem. A wired access point or better mesh placement may be a more direct response to weak rooms; a Wi-Fi 7 system may be worth comparing when you need an upgrade now and its supported features match your clients and network. The WBA trial provides an example of Wi-Fi 7 MLO being evaluated under demanding conditions, but it does not establish results for every home.

Wait for Wi-Fi 8 evidence if your network works well
If today’s network is stable and meets your household’s needs, waiting avoids paying early for a draft-era ecosystem before final specifications, certification, independent residential tests, broader device support, and local availability are clear. There is no independently measured, representative statistic in the available sources for the improvement a typical home should expect from Wi-Fi 8.
