For packaged foods in the United States, check the current package’s full ingredient list and any allergen statements. If the label leaves you uncertain, FDA advises not buying the product or contacting the manufacturer or distributor.
Why peanut butter snacks are not a suitable choice
Peanut butter is made from peanuts, so a snack that lists peanut butter or another peanut ingredient is not an option to treat as safe for someone with a peanut allergy. This general label guidance does not determine whether a particular person will react or assess an individual product’s safety.

How to check a packaged snack label
For most packaged foods regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a major allergen food source must be identified in the ingredient list or a “Contains” statement. A “Contains” line, if present, does not replace reading the complete ingredient list; not every allergen-containing packaged food has one. FDA food technologist Carol D’Lima advises: “It’s very important to read the entire ingredient list to see if your allergen is present.” FDA: Have Food Allergies? Read the Label
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the entire ingredient list and look for peanut and peanut-derived ingredients.
- Read any “Contains” statement, if present.
- Check for precautionary wording such as “may contain peanuts” or “produced in a facility that processes peanuts.”
- Repeat the check each time you buy the product, because ingredients can change.
What “may contain” and “made in a facility” mean
Precautionary allergen statements are voluntary warnings about possible unintended allergen presence, such as cross-contact when products share equipment. Because manufacturers do not use these statements uniformly and the law does not require them, the absence of a warning does not prove that cross-contact cannot occur. FDA also says the wording does not provide a reliable way to rank risk: “produced in a facility” is not necessarily more or less likely to signal cross-contact than “may contain.” FDA: The Current Food Allergen Landscape The FDA describes precautionary statements as truthful, non-misleading warnings that cannot replace allergen preventive controls. - Do not rely on a broad “peanut-free” description or on having bought the snack before; check the current package.
- If ingredients or cross-contact wording leave you unsure, do not buy the product.
- Alternatively, contact the manufacturer or distributor listed on the package and ask what the product contains. FDA’s consumer guidance gives the same advice when a consumer is unsure about an ingredient.
No specific snack product is established here as safe for peanut allergy. A product-specific decision requires current label information and, when necessary, clarification from its manufacturer or distributor.
