The quickest local check is the Windows SMS Agent Host service, named CcmExec. If it exists and is running, that is strong evidence the Configuration Manager client is present; Microsoft’s client health checks also expect the service to start automatically. To distinguish installation from successful registration or management, check the client’s properties and the Configuration Manager console as well.
Check the workstation’s SMS Agent Host service
On the Windows workstation, open the Services console and look for SMS Agent Host (CcmExec). You can also query the service from an elevated command prompt:

sc query CcmExec
A running service confirms that the client service is present and active at the time of the check. Microsoft’s client health checks also verify that the service exists and is configured for automatic startup. If the service is missing, stopped, or repeatedly stops, do not treat the client as healthy based on another sign of installation alone. Microsoft recommends reviewing client logs and Windows event logs when the service will not start or stay running. Microsoft’s client health guidance describes these checks.

Use Configuration Manager Support Center to load the workstation’s client details. It can show the client version, registration state, and assigned site code. The Configuration Manager client application also exposes properties including build number, assigned site, and the management point with which the client is communicating.

A version or build number supports the conclusion that client files are installed. Registration and site or management-point information add evidence about whether the client is enrolled and operating within the site, rather than merely present on disk. Microsoft Support Center documentation explains the client information available there; see client properties for the related application details.
Check the device in the Configuration Manager console
- In the Configuration Manager console, go to Assets and Compliance > Devices.
- Find the workstation and inspect the Client column.
- If the client was only just assigned to a site, update collection membership and refresh the view before drawing a conclusion.
Console presence by itself does not prove installation: discovery can create a device record when the client is absent. Microsoft states, “A device can also display in the console when the Configuration Manager client isn’t installed.” The reverse can also happen: a client that has not successfully assigned to a site may not yet display. Interpret the Client column alongside local service and client-property checks, allowing for assignment and console refresh timing. Microsoft’s client management guidance covers the console indicators and these limitations.

Use client logs when the result is unclear
ccmsetup.logrecords client setup, upgrade, and removal activity. Review it when you need to determine whether installation completed or encountered an error.CcmExec.logrecords client and SMS Agent Host service activity. Use it to investigate service operation.
Microsoft documents these log purposes in its Configuration Manager log file reference. If the service will not remain running, also check Windows event logs.
Verification on a Mac
On a Mac with the Configuration Manager client, open the Configuration Manager item in System Preferences to verify installation. Then check that the computer appears as a managed client in the console’s All Systems collection. This is a different local confirmation path from the Windows CcmExec check. See Microsoft’s Mac client installation guidance.

What each check establishes
| Check | Evidence it provides | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
CcmExec service |
Local service presence and current running state; health guidance also checks automatic startup. | Successful registration or effective site management. |
| Support Center or client properties | Client version/build and details such as registration, assigned site, or communicating management point. | That the console’s device view has refreshed or that every client function is healthy. |
| Console Client column | Management-console indication of client status for the device. | Local installation based on device-record presence alone; discovery can create a record without the client. |
ccmsetup.log and CcmExec.log |
Installation history and client/service activity, respectively. | A live service state by themselves; pair log review with a current service check. |
