How to Tell Whether Frame Generation Is Causing Stutter or Controller Lag

Higher FPS with frame generation does not prove lower input lag. The reliable way to find out whether DLSS Frame Generation or AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is responsible is a controlled on/off comparison in the same scene, followed by display-timing and latency measurements. Keep every other setting fixed, record both base and generated frame rates, and check frame-time consistency rather than trusting the headline FPS number.

If the same stutter or controller delay remains with frame generation disabled, frame generation is not the sole cause. Look next at the game’s base frame pacing, CPU or GPU saturation, VSync/VRR behavior, display connection, and controller path.

What you are trying to prove

Frame generation creates additional displayed images between traditionally rendered frames. Those generated images can make camera motion look smoother, but they do not remove the time required to render the next real frame and process your input. A game can therefore show a much higher generated-FPS figure while the controller feels no faster, or even slower.

A useful diagnosis separates three questions:

  • Did the symptom change when frame generation was enabled?
  • Did displayed frame timing become less consistent, even if the average FPS rose?
  • Is the extra delay caused by generation itself, a presentation queue, incorrect latency integration, or another part of the system?

Answer those questions with repeatable measurements instead of impressions from a single play session.

Prepare a repeatable test

Choose one reproducible scene

Use a location where you can repeat the same camera movement and controller action: a fixed route through a level, a training arena, or a saved position facing a busy scene. Record the exact action, such as moving the right stick through a 90-degree sweep for two seconds while walking forward. Avoid comparing unrelated gameplay moments; different enemy counts, effects, or streaming activity can change frame times.

Record the variables that affect presentation

Write down the display refresh rate, whether variable refresh rate (VRR) is active, VSync state in the game and driver, window mode, resolution, upscaler mode, graphics preset, frame cap, driver profile, frame-generation mode, base FPS, generated FPS, and any in-game latency indicator. If the game exposes a Reflex or Anti-Lag status, record that too.

Stabilize the environment

  • Use the same monitor input, cable, HDR state, and refresh-rate setting for both runs.
  • Close overlays and background applications that could change GPU or CPU load.
  • Do not change resolution, upscaler quality, ray-tracing options, or a frame cap between the two runs.
  • Allow shader compilation and asset streaming to settle before recording a pass.
  • Use the same controller, USB or wireless connection, polling setting, and battery state.

The controlled A/B procedure

  1. Set a baseline. Disable frame generation while leaving resolution, upscaler, graphics settings, window mode, VSync, VRR, cap, and driver profile unchanged. Enter the selected scene and perform the recorded camera and controller action several times.
  2. Capture baseline data. Record average FPS, frame-time behavior, 1% low FPS if available, the game’s latency indicator, and your qualitative observations about camera and controller response. Note any hitch, queue buildup, or recurring pause by time or location in the route.
  3. Enable only frame generation. Turn on DLSS Frame Generation or AFMF without changing another option. If the game requires a restart, restart it and repeat the same setup. Confirm that the feature is actually active rather than assuming the menu toggle succeeded.
  4. Repeat the identical action. Use the same save, camera path, movement duration, and observation period. Run enough passes to distinguish a repeatable effect from a one-off shader or streaming hitch.
  5. Compare base and generated rates. A generated-FPS increase is evidence that the feature is producing frames, not evidence that input latency fell. Check whether the real, traditionally rendered base rate changed and whether frame times became more variable.
  6. Measure displayed timing. For DLSS Frame Generation, use a tool that measures when frames reach the display rather than only when the application calls Present(). NVIDIA’s Streamline guidance identifies MsBetweenDisplayChange as the appropriate timing for frame-pacing quality and warns that MsBetweenPresents can be misleading because DLSS-G may delay the image after Present().
  7. Test the latency companion. For DLSS-G, enable NVIDIA Reflex when the game offers it. For AFMF, enable AMD Radeon Anti-Lag. Re-run the same scene and record whether latency and frame-time variance change. Treat this as a separate test, not as permission to change several synchronization settings at once.
  8. Test synchronization one variable at a time. Keep the frame-generation mode fixed while trying the documented VSync/VRR combinations, a lower generation multiplier where available, or a lower frame cap. Record each configuration so a queueing change is not mistaken for a rendering improvement.

Measure smoothness and responsiveness, not just FPS

FrameView metrics for DLSS-G

NVIDIA FrameView measures smoothness and responsiveness, supports per-frame latency, and exposes a 1% low-FPS stutter metric. The current FrameView 1.7 User Guide documents the 1% low metric, and NVIDIA says FrameView is compatible with DLSS 4 Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation. FrameView version 16.1 and later uses MsBetweenDisplayChange for frame-pacing quality, matching NVIDIA’s Streamline recommendation.

Use the capture to compare the shape of the frame-time trace, not merely its average. A run with a higher mean FPS but repeated long spikes can feel worse than a lower-FPS run with even spacing. Per-frame latency also helps separate a visual smoothness gain from a controller-response penalty.

AFMF activity and latency indicators

AMD’s Adrenalin in-game overlay includes an AFMF activity monitor that confirms whether frame generation is operating. Use it alongside your frame-time and latency observations; an overlay showing AFMF activity does not by itself prove that the feature is the source of a hitch.

Why Present() counts can fool you

A present-call counter records application submissions. It does not necessarily tell you when the image changed on the panel. DLSS-G can use specialized hardware to delay the image after Present() has been called, so a regular Present() cadence may coexist with uneven or delayed display changes. This is why displayed timing and 1% lows matter more than an average counter when diagnosing pacing.

DLSS Frame Generation and AFMF: what differs during diagnosis

Why frame generation can feel delayed or stuttery

Generation adds to the input-to-display path

The real base frame still has to be rendered from current game state and input. A generated frame is inserted between real frames; it does not become a new simulation tick. If the base rate is low or uneven, generated images cannot fully hide that timing. AMD explicitly warns that AFMF can introduce additional latency and may be unsuitable for fast competitive titles.

A presentation queue can build up

When a generation multiplier produces images faster than a low-refresh display can present them, pending frames can accumulate. The controller then appears to act behind your movement because the panel is showing older work. NVIDIA documents this risk when high frame-generation multipliers are combined with VSync on low-refresh displays. Test a lower multiplier, a higher-refresh display, or a different VSync behavior while keeping all unrelated settings fixed.

Latency integration can be wrong

Frame generation depends on correct frame indices, motion data, and latency-tool integration. NVIDIA’s Streamline checklist states that incorrect frame values or Reflex integration can increase input latency and stutter, and that proper Reflex integration is required for frame generation. A game update, mod, or driver change can therefore create a problem even when the same feature worked previously. Compare the game’s current build and driver profile with the last known-good configuration, then test without mods.

The measurement method can report the wrong event

If you judge pacing from Present() intervals alone, DLSS-G’s delayed display path can hide a problem. Use display-change timing, frame-time variance, 1% lows, and latency measurements together. A stable average FPS is not enough to establish smooth delivery.

AFMF may be operating outside its preferred display conditions

AMD’s current AFMF documentation lists support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 with DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, and OpenGL applications. It lists VSync disabled in both driver and game settings and recommends a FreeSync monitor. A mismatch with those conditions can make the result unstable or make synchronization artifacts look like controller lag. Confirm the operating system, API, driver settings, game settings, and monitor mode before blaming the algorithm.

How to interpret your A/B result

Stutter and latency worsen only with frame generation on

This pattern makes frame generation or its presentation path a credible contributor. First verify that the feature is active, then enable Reflex or Anti-Lag, check the documented VSync/VRR conditions, and try a lower multiplier or frame cap. If the problem disappears after one of those changes, the original issue was likely queueing or latency integration rather than the mere existence of generated images.

Visual smoothness improves but controller delay increases

This is a valid trade-off, not a contradictory result. Generated frames can raise the displayed frame count while the base simulation and input sample remain unchanged. Keep frame generation for slower, cinematic, or single-player games if the visual benefit is worth the delay; disable it for situations where immediate aim or steering is more important.

Average FPS rises but 1% lows and frame-time spikes worsen

The feature is masking a pacing problem instead of solving it. Check CPU and GPU saturation, shader compilation, asset streaming, background load, and the presentation queue. A lower generation multiplier or a cap that leaves headroom for the display can be preferable to the highest possible generated number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The symptom is identical with frame generation off

Frame generation is not the sole cause. Investigate the base renderer and display path: CPU-bound simulation, GPU saturation, unstable clocks, shader compilation, background overlays, VSync/VRR conflicts, an overloaded USB or wireless controller link, and the monitor’s own processing mode. Repeat the baseline with a different controller or display only after the game’s frame pacing has been characterized.

The problem appears only after an update

Capture the game version, driver version, frame-generation plugin version, and changed settings. For DLSS-G, retest Reflex integration and display-change timing. For AFMF, confirm that the Adrenalin profile still has the intended VSync, FreeSync, and Anti-Lag settings. A clean test without mods helps isolate an integration regression from a hardware fault.

AFMF-specific checks

  1. Open the AMD Adrenalin profile for the game and confirm AFMF is enabled for the correct executable.
  2. Verify that VSync is disabled in both the driver profile and the game, as listed in AMD’s current guidance.
  3. Use a FreeSync-capable display when possible and confirm the monitor is actually running at its intended refresh rate.
  4. Confirm the game uses a supported API: DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan, or OpenGL, on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  5. Watch the Adrenalin overlay’s AFMF activity monitor during the repeatable scene.
  6. Start from AMD’s preview guidance of 55 FPS at 1080p or 70 FPS at 1440p and above as a diagnostic baseline, not as a guarantee. If your base rate is below those figures, test with AFMF off before drawing conclusions about latency.
  7. Enable Anti-Lag and repeat the same pass. Record whether the latency feel changes independently of the generated-FPS figure.

DLSS-G-specific checks

  1. Enable NVIDIA Reflex in the game when available and verify that its status is active during the test.
  2. Use FrameView or another measurement path that exposes per-frame latency and display-change timing.
  3. Do not use MsBetweenPresents alone to judge pacing; NVIDIA’s Streamline guidance says it is unsuitable for DLSS-G’s delayed presentation behavior.
  4. Check for a recent game, driver, mod, or DLSS plugin change. Incorrect frame-index or Reflex integration can create both stutter and latency.
  5. Test the generation multiplier, VSync, VRR, and frame cap separately, especially on a low-refresh display where a queue can form.

A practical decision checklist

  • Same scene, same action: Can you reproduce the symptom on demand?
  • Controlled A/B: Did you change only frame generation between the first two runs?
  • Base rate recorded: Did you separate traditionally rendered FPS from generated FPS?
  • Display timing measured: Did you use display-change timing for DLSS-G rather than Present() intervals alone?
  • Latency companion tested: Did you test Reflex for DLSS-G or Anti-Lag for AFMF?
  • Synchronization isolated: Did you test VSync, VRR, refresh rate, multiplier, and cap one at a time?
  • Persistence checked: Does the symptom remain with frame generation off?

The strongest conclusion is not “the FPS number went up” or “the feature felt bad once.” It is a repeatable difference in displayed frame timing or measured latency between matched runs, with synchronization and latency integration accounted for.

Limits of what you can conclude

There is no authoritative universal controller-latency threshold that defines when frame generation becomes unacceptable, and there is no universal base-FPS minimum that applies to every game, display, API, and genre. AMD’s 55-FPS and 70-FPS figures are guidance from its 2023 AFMF preview, not a law of physics. Likewise, a stutter event is not automatically caused by frame generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the feature’s own telemetry and a controlled comparison to establish causality for your system. If the result is better visual continuity with a small, acceptable response penalty, keep it for that workload. If the queue, pacing variance, or controller delay outweighs the visual gain, disable frame generation or reduce its multiplier and cap the base pipeline instead.
