Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou cannot prove online backgammon dice are fair from a few surprising turns or a short run of doubles. The reliable approach is to look for independently checkable testing of the random-number generator, confirm exactly what was tested and whether the certificate is still valid, and prefer downloadable match records or a reproducible verifier. Operator assurances and roll histograms can support a claim, but neither is conclusive on its own.
What “fair dice” means online
In a physical game, fairness usually means two well-made dice give each face an equal chance and do not influence one another. An online game does not roll plastic dice. It generates outcomes with software, normally through a random-number generator (RNG), then applies those outcomes to the game state. A fairness assessment therefore has to examine both the random source and the way the game uses it.

Unpredictability
A cryptographically secure RNG is designed to make the next result infeasible to predict from previous results or publicly visible game information. This protects against a player, observer or operator forecasting future rolls. “Cryptographically secure” describes resistance to prediction; it does not by itself prove that every face appears equally often or that the application assigns outcomes correctly.
Uniform distribution
Uniformity means that each die face has the intended probability over a sufficiently large number of trials. For two dice, every ordered pair should have the same chance in a fair model. A short session can look far from uniform even when the underlying generator is sound, so a chart with a small sample is not a pass-or-fail test.

Independence
Independence means one roll does not alter the probability of a later roll. A run of the same number, several doubles, or repeated hits can occur in an independent sequence. Independence is a separate property from uniformity: a generator could produce each face equally often overall while still introducing a pattern from one roll to the next.
The evidence hierarchy
Not all “fair dice” evidence carries the same weight. Treat the following as progressively stronger forms of evidence, while checking the limits of each one.
| Evidence | What it can support | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Operator help page or statement | How the company says rolls are generated, what data the RNG supposedly receives, and what statistics it exposes. | That the deployed server actually behaves as described or that the claims were independently tested. |
| Profile statistics or match histograms | Visible aggregate results and possible imbalances worth investigating over a substantial sample. | When an outcome was assigned, whether player identity influenced it, or whether the displayed data is complete and unaltered. |
| Federation or code review | Evidence that a named game’s code and algorithm were examined against the reviewer’s stated criteria. | Fairness of other games, later code changes, or every production configuration unless those are within the review scope. |
| Independent laboratory test | Testing of specified RNG properties, such as unpredictability, distribution and statistical test batteries, for the identified system. | Anything outside the certificate’s system, version, dates or stated test scope. |
| Public records plus a reproducible verifier | A way for players to reconstruct a committed roll sequence and check that a published match follows the documented process. | That the server deployed the same code as the public verifier unless deployment equivalence is demonstrated. |
How to audit a game’s fairness claims
Use this sequence whenever you are evaluating a platform. Save the documents you checked, because a web page or certificate can later be replaced.

1. Find the platform’s exact description
Read the game’s fairness, RNG or help-center page rather than relying on forum summaries. Note whether the operator states that rolls are generated server-side, whether the generator receives the match score, board position or player identity, and whether the page provides a date or version. These are claims by the operator until a relevant review confirms them.

For example, Backgammon.com says its server uses a cryptographically secure RNG and that the generator receives no match score, position or player identity. That description tells you what to verify; it is not independent proof merely because it is written in a help article.
2. Identify who reviewed the system
Write down the reviewer’s legal name and role. A testing laboratory, a backgammon federation and an internal engineering team are not interchangeable. Check whether the reviewer examined the RNG algorithm, the compiled output, the complete application integration, or only selected source code.
Ask what properties were tested. A useful report states whether it assessed unpredictability, uniform distribution, independence or statistical test batteries. “Audited” without a scope, method or system identifier is too vague to evaluate.
3. Read the certificate itself
Do not rely solely on a badge or a paragraph quoting a certificate. Look for the document on the certifier’s own website when possible. Confirm the game or product name, the covered RNG or code, issue date, validity period, and any version or configuration identifier. A certificate for one title does not automatically cover another title from the same publisher.

4. Check whether it is current
Validity dates matter as much as the issuing body. A certificate can accurately describe a review that was completed years ago while no longer covering the code now running in production. Record both the issue and expiration dates, and look for a renewal or a notice that the covered system changed.
5. Examine the player-facing evidence
See whether the game lets you export match records, inspect every roll, view a profile histogram or download a replay. These features improve transparency, but they do not prove that the underlying values were assigned fairly. A histogram is a summary of what the platform displays; it does not reveal the decision point at which the server selected an outcome.
6. Look for reproducible verification
The strongest player-accessible design publishes a commitment or seed before play, releases the necessary information afterward, and documents a verifier that reconstructs the sequence. Check whether the verifier is open to inspection, whether the match report contains all required inputs, and whether the protocol explains how seeds are generated and protected from alteration.
7. Keep a dated record of your conclusion
Save the certificate file or a stable copy, note the page’s modification date, and write down exactly what is and is not covered. Your conclusion should be narrow: for example, “an independent laboratory reported testing the named RNG during the stated period,” not “all games from this company have fair dice.”

Why streaks do not prove cheating
Random sequences are not smooth. Genuine randomness produces clusters, gaps and apparent patterns. A player can receive several doubles, miss a needed number repeatedly, or see consecutive hitting rolls without the generator being biased. Backgammon.com summarizes this point as “Certified randomness still produces streaks.”
Human judgment is also affected by salience. A roll that changes a match dramatically is remembered; ordinary rolls are not. Comparing your emotional impression with a few dozen turns therefore has little evidential value. To investigate a suspected problem, collect complete records over many matches and define the test before looking at the result.
Uniformity and independence should be tested separately. A face-frequency chart can indicate whether outcomes are distributed plausibly, but it cannot show whether the next roll depended on the current board, score or player. Conversely, a sequence can have an unusual short-term pattern while still being consistent with an independent process.

What a large sample can reveal
Over a substantial, well-recorded sample, a strong imbalance may justify questions about implementation, data collection or the generator. Compare like with like: the same game mode, dice definition, time period and complete set of recorded rolls. State how missing games, abandoned matches and duplicate records were handled.

What a histogram cannot reveal
A displayed distribution does not establish when the server selected each outcome. It cannot, by itself, rule out an algorithm that gives plausible overall frequencies but chooses particular rolls at advantageous moments. It also cannot show whether the statistics include all games or only the current account’s records.
Why sample size and method matter
A small personal sample has wide natural variation. A large sample can still be misleading if it is selectively collected or if the platform’s logging method is opaque. Statistical evidence becomes more useful when the raw match records are available, the test procedure is published in advance, and another person can repeat the calculation.

The following examples show how to read evidence; they are not a ranking of online backgammon games and do not establish a market-wide guarantee.
| Game or platform | Published evidence | Date and validity | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backgammon.com | The operator says its server uses a cryptographically secure RNG and that the generator receives no match score, position or player identity. It reports an RNG evaluation by Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) covering unpredictability, uniform distribution and statistical test batteries. | The operator reports the GLI evaluation took place in July 2026. Check the laboratory-hosted certificate for the exact validity period and covered system. | This is stronger than an unaudited statement if the certificate matches the production system, but the certificate’s own scope controls what can be concluded. |
| Backgammon Galaxy | Its help page says it uses a cryptographically secure RNG and offers dice statistics on a player profile. | The page shows a modification date of May 20, 2025. | The statement and statistics are transparency measures from the operator. They are not a substitute for an independently accessible review. |
| Backgammon Plus | The World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) certificate says it conducted due diligence into the game’s code and judged the random dice generator suitably strong for backgammon dice. | Certificate dated April 17, 2025; it states validity until April 30, 2026. That validity had ended by October 15, 2026. | It is evidence of the covered review at the time stated, not a current certificate on the October 2026 date. |
| Lord of the Board | The WBGF certificate says it conducted due diligence into the code and judged the random dice generator suitably strong. | Certificate dated March 9, 2026; it states validity through May 31, 2028. | This supports a claim about the named game and covered code during the stated validity period, not every game from the same publisher. |
Reproducibility: the most useful transparency feature
A reproducible system lets a player verify a particular match instead of relying only on aggregate statistics. One common design commits to a secret value before the match, combines it with a player-visible value, and reveals enough information after the match to recompute every roll. The exact cryptographic construction and commitment rules must be documented; a label such as “provably fair” is not a method.
An open-source project called “Provably-Fair Backgammon Verifier” demonstrates a client-side approach that reconstructs rolls from a match report using an HMAC-SHA256 seed construction. That example shows what a verifier can do, but it applies to that project. It does not prove that another game uses the same protocol, that its server implementation matches the published code, or that the commitment cannot be changed in production.
AI Factory describes a different, product-specific method: replaying a game from a manual seed and checking whether the same roll sequence recurs. This can test reproducibility in that software. It should not be assumed to validate a server-based game whose seed handling and deployment are different.
What to do if your results still look wrong
- Preserve the records. Export match files or capture the complete roll sequence, match identifier, date, game mode and any available seed or replay data. Do not rely on memory or screenshots of isolated turns.
- Separate observations from conclusions. Record facts such as “18 doubles in 240 recorded rolls,” then state the collection method and whether the sample includes every game. Avoid labeling the result cheating before the assignment process is examined.
- Ask precise support questions. Request the current certificate, reviewer, covered version, validity dates, and documentation of how rolls are assigned. Ask whether the platform can provide a machine-readable match log or verifier.
- Compare independent evidence. If the operator cites a laboratory or federation, read that organization’s document rather than a marketing summary. Check that the named system and dates correspond to the game you played.
- Escalate only on reproducible findings. A repeatable verifier failure, a certificate that does not cover the deployed system, or a documented mismatch between published and observed rolls is materially stronger evidence than a streak.
Common mistakes when judging online dice
- Using a short personal run as a test. Short sequences naturally produce surprising clusters.
- Equating “cryptographically secure” with “uniform.” Prediction resistance and equal probabilities are different requirements.
- Treating a histogram as proof of fair assignment. Aggregate frequencies do not show when or why each outcome was selected.
- Ignoring expiration dates. An old certificate may describe a past version or a review period that has ended.
- Transferring a review between games. A certificate for one title does not automatically cover another title from the same publisher.
- Assuming public code proves production behavior. The deployed server must be shown to run the reviewed implementation and configuration.
- Accepting a badge without a document. Look for the certifier, scope, issue date and validity period.
- Inventing a market-wide conclusion. There is no general published prevalence statistic establishing how often online backgammon dice are biased, so one platform’s evidence cannot be generalized to all games.
A quick checklist before you trust a fairness claim
- Is the claim about the exact game and current production system?
- Who reviewed it: the operator, a federation or an independent laboratory?
- Does the report identify the RNG, application scope and tested properties?
- Are the issue and expiration dates visible, and is the certificate still valid?
- Can you read the original document on the reviewer’s own site?
- Are complete match records available rather than only a summary chart?
- Is there a documented seed, commitment or verifier for individual matches?
- Does the method explain its own limits, including what it cannot detect?
- Have you collected enough comparable data to make a statistical question meaningful?
The practical standard is not “never see a streak.” It is a current, independently checkable account of how rolls are generated, tested and recorded, with enough transparency for another person to verify the same evidence.
