Rockstar Games calls its extra sign-in protection 2-Step Verification. To enable it, open your account settings, enroll a compatible authenticator with a QR code or secret key, then confirm your Rockstar password and the current code from the authenticator. Enable the app’s cloud backup before you lose or replace your phone.
What Rockstar 2-Step Verification protects
2-Step Verification adds an authenticator-generated code to your Rockstar Games password. A person trying to sign in would need both credentials at the same time. Rockstar describes the protection this way: “With 2-Step Verification, anyone attempting to access your account will have to know your password and have your verification code at the same time.” That statement appears in Rockstar Games Support’s “Why Should I Add 2-Step Verification?” article, last updated May 20, 2024.

The feature is not a replacement for a strong password. It is a second check after the password is entered. Rockstar also lets you choose to remember a device. A remembered device can bypass code entry on later sign-ins, so only use that option on a device and user account you control.

- An active Rockstar Games account and its password.
- Access to the email address on the account. Rockstar’s current help-directory summary says the email may need to be verified before enrollment.
- A mobile or browser authenticator that can scan a QR code or accept a secret key manually.
- A way to preserve the authenticator’s backup or recovery information before you finish setup.
Rockstar’s support directory lists the setup guide as updated August 18, 2026. The detailed enrollment instructions were last updated January 10, 2025, so button names can change. If the live account page uses slightly different wording, follow the equivalent Settings and 2-Step Verification controls rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Compatible authenticator apps
Rockstar’s compatible-app list, last updated July 18, 2025, names four options. Rockstar presents them as compatible choices, not as a security ranking. Pick the one that works on your phone or browser and whose recovery process you understand.
| Authenticator | What Rockstar establishes | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Twilio Authy | Listed as compatible; Rockstar says the listed apps offer cloud backups. | Use it if you already have an Authy account and know how its account recovery works. |
| Google Authenticator | Listed as compatible; Rockstar recommends enabling the app’s cloud backup. | A practical choice when it is already installed on your devices. |
| Microsoft Authenticator | Listed as compatible and included in Rockstar’s lost-device recovery guidance. | Consider the recovery route for the Microsoft account or backup you use with it. |
| 1Password | Listed as compatible; Rockstar includes it among apps for which cloud backup and recovery should be planned. | Useful if you already use its authenticator feature; it is not required for Rockstar 2-Step Verification. |
All four are presented by Rockstar as supporting cloud backups. Turn that feature on in the authenticator you select. A backup is useful only if you can also regain access to the app’s account or recovery method, so review that process while you still have the original device.
There is no need to install every compatible app. Choose one authenticator entry for this Rockstar account and keep it consistent. If you use several phones, do not assume that installing the app on each phone creates several valid enrollments; the Rockstar enrollment must be completed through the account’s 2-Step Verification settings. A browser-based authenticator is acceptable when it supports the QR-code or secret-key enrollment flow, but protect the browser profile and its backup account just as carefully as a phone.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Cost should not determine whether you enable the feature. Rockstar lists these apps as compatible and does not require a separately purchased device. A paid app may be useful if you already rely on it, but no paid subscription, FIDO key, dedicated hardware token, replacement phone, or printed manual is established as necessary for this setup.
Pre-enrollment checklist
Complete these checks before opening the setup screen. They reduce the chance that you lock yourself out while moving between account pages and the authenticator.
- Confirm that you can sign in with the current Rockstar password.
- Open the account email and complete verification if Rockstar requests it.
- Install or open only the authenticator you intend to use.
- Sign in to that authenticator’s backup account, if it uses one, and learn its recovery method.
- Ensure the phone or computer clock is set to update automatically.
- Keep the original device available until a test sign-in succeeds.
- Use a private screen when displaying the QR code or secret key.
How to turn on 2-Step Verification
- Sign in to your Rockstar Games account. Use the account whose game access you want to protect.
- Open the account menu. Select your account avatar, then choose Settings.
- Open the security section. Select the 2-Step Verification tab or control.
- Start enrollment. Select Setup. If Rockstar asks you to verify the account email first, complete that verification and return to Settings.
- Display the enrollment secret. Rockstar shows a QR code. Scan it with your mobile or browser authenticator. If scanning is unavailable, enter the displayed secret key manually in the authenticator.
- Confirm both factors. Enter your Rockstar account password and the current code shown by the authenticator.
- Finish. Select Verify. Wait for the account page to confirm that 2-Step Verification is enabled before closing the tab.
The QR code or secret key links the authenticator to this particular Rockstar account. Treat the secret key as sensitive: anyone who obtains it may be able to generate codes. Do not post it in a screenshot, chat, support forum, or cloud note that other people can read.
If the setup page times out, start again from the live Settings page instead of reusing an old QR image. Keep the authenticator entry that was actually confirmed by Rockstar, and label it clearly if the app contains codes for several services. That makes later recovery and device migration less error-prone.

Verify that enrollment really works
After selecting Verify, sign out only if you are confident you can sign back in. A controlled test can confirm the setup: start a new sign-in on a device that is not marked as remembered, enter the Rockstar password, and provide the authenticator code. If you choose “remember this device,” record which device received that trust and avoid using the option on shared computers.
Keep the authenticator installed until you have successfully completed a fresh sign-in. Removing it immediately can leave you with no working second factor if the enrollment was not saved.
During the test, wait for a newly generated code and submit it before the countdown changes to another value. Confirm that you are entering the code from the Rockstar entry, not a similarly named account. Once the test succeeds, close the test session and review whether any remembered-device setting was enabled unintentionally.
Backups are part of the setup, not an optional afterthought
Rockstar strongly recommends enabling cloud backup in the compatible authenticator. The purpose is continuity: a lost, damaged, or replaced phone should not also remove your only way to generate the Rockstar code.
- Enable the authenticator’s cloud-backup feature while the current device still works.
- Know which account or sign-in protects that backup.
- Test that you can authenticate to the backup service before wiping or trading in the old phone.
- Keep the Rockstar password available through your normal password-management process; the authenticator code alone is not enough.
- Do not assume a phone backup automatically restores every authenticator account. Confirm the provider’s own recovery procedure.
Cloud backup does not eliminate the need to protect the backup account. A person who gains access to that account may gain access to restored authenticator data. Use the provider’s normal sign-in and device-lock protections, and do not email or post the Rockstar secret key as an informal backup.
Rockstar does not require a separately purchased physical product for this procedure. Its instructions describe using a mobile or browser authenticator, and they do not establish a FIDO security key, dedicated hardware OTP token, replacement phone, or printed manual as necessary or recommended.
Move 2-Step Verification to a new device
If your old phone still works, move the enrollment before erasing it. Rockstar’s migration guide was last updated January 6, 2025.

- Remove the existing device enrollment using the control shown on that page.
- On the accessible new device, open your chosen authenticator and enroll it by scanning Rockstar’s new QR code or entering the displayed secret key.
- Enter the Rockstar password and the new authenticator code, then select Verify.
- Confirm a test sign-in before wiping the old device.
Removing the old device is different from merely installing the authenticator app on a second phone. The new installation must be enrolled in the Rockstar account. Because the migration article dates from 2025, use the current on-screen labels if Rockstar has renamed the removal or setup controls.
Do not wipe, sell, or trade in the old phone between removing the enrollment and confirming the new one. If the migration fails, the old device may be the only working route back into Settings. After the replacement device passes a fresh sign-in, turn on its backup and keep the old device available until you are satisfied that recovery works.
If you lost the phone or authenticator
Rockstar’s July 9, 2025 support guidance directs users to the recovery process for the authenticator they used. The recovery path depends on the provider:
- Authy: use Authy’s account-recovery process to restore the authenticator data.
- Google Authenticator: use the Google Authenticator backup or account-recovery route associated with your setup.
- Microsoft Authenticator: follow Microsoft Authenticator’s restore and account-recovery instructions.
- 1Password: use the recovery method for the 1Password account or vault that held the authenticator.
Recovering the authenticator provider is not the same as recovering a Rockstar account. If provider recovery does not restore the Rockstar entry or you cannot complete the sign-in, contact Rockstar Support and explain that the enrolled authenticator is unavailable. Do not assume support will bypass the second factor without account verification.
If you still have a browser or computer that Rockstar remembers, use that access carefully to open Settings and remove or replace the old enrollment. Do not sign out of the remembered session until the new authenticator has been verified.

Once access is restored, check the account’s 2-Step Verification page and confirm that the replacement enrollment is the one generating accepted codes. Then enable cloud backup and test a new sign-in. Do not keep relying indefinitely on a remembered session; it can disappear when cookies, the browser profile, or the device is reset.
Fix rejected or expired authenticator codes
Rockstar’s June 23, 2026 support article for error #0.200.4 identifies several likely causes: the code was entered incorrectly, it expired, or the authenticator device changed.

Enter a fresh code
Wait for a newly displayed code, type it exactly as shown, and submit it before it expires. Avoid adding spaces or copying an older code from a notification or screenshot. If a code has already been rejected, generate a new one instead of repeatedly submitting the same value.
Synchronize the clock
Authenticator codes depend on the authenticator and the sign-in service having the correct time. Make sure the device’s date, time, and time zone are set automatically. For Google Authenticator on Android, use the app’s documented time-correction option and synchronize the codes, following Rockstar’s instructions. On iOS, Rockstar specifically advises ensuring that automatic date and time is enabled in the device settings.
Check whether the device changed
If you recently moved to another phone, the old enrollment may still be active. Follow the migration procedure: open Rockstar account Settings, enter 2-Step Verification, remove the existing device, enroll the authenticator on the accessible device, and verify with the password and new code.
Escalate only after local checks
If a correctly timed, freshly generated code still produces #0.200.4, stop retrying random codes. Confirm that you are using the authenticator entry created for this Rockstar account, then contact Rockstar Support with the error number and the steps already attempted. Never send Rockstar your secret key or a complete authenticator screenshot.

Security practices after activation
- Use a unique Rockstar password and do not reuse it on unrelated services.
- Keep the authenticator app and device operating system current through their normal update process.
- Protect the phone, browser profile, and authenticator backup account with their own lock or sign-in controls.
- Be cautious of messages asking for your Rockstar password, one-time code, QR code, or secret key. A support representative should not need your current authenticator code in an unsolicited message.
- Review remembered devices periodically, especially after selling, repairing, or sharing a computer.
- Before replacing a phone, verify the authenticator backup and complete a successful Rockstar sign-in on the replacement device.
There is no Rockstar-provided study or statistic in the cited support material that quantifies how many accounts are protected by 2-Step Verification. The practical benefit established by Rockstar is the additional requirement for both the password and the verification code.
When to contact Rockstar Support
Use Rockstar Support when the authenticator provider cannot restore your account, the current settings page will not let you remove or replace an inaccessible device, or error #0.200.4 continues after a fresh code and correct time synchronization. Include the exact error number, whether the phone changed, and which authenticator you used. Do not include the authenticator secret key, backup codes, or a full QR-code image in a support request.
