Those are different kinds of transparency, not interchangeable fairness scores. Backgammon.com’s claims are published by the operator, the WBGF work is a code review rather than a common laboratory test of several apps, and the available material does not establish an independent ranking of these services. The right choice depends on whether you value outside verification, visible statistics, or the ability to reproduce and inspect rolls yourself.

What “transparent dice” should mean
A digital backgammon roll has at least two separate questions behind it:
- How is the random value generated? This concerns the RNG, its entropy source and the algorithm.
- How can a player check what happened? This concerns statistics, saved records, seeds, replay tools and manual alternatives.
A provider’s statement that it uses a “cryptographically secure” RNG addresses the first question in broad terms. It does not, by itself, prove that every server component, game client and deployment is correctly implemented. Conversely, a replay file or profile statistic can make a game easier to inspect without proving that the underlying generator passed an independent security test.

For a useful comparison, separate four evidence levels:

Backgammon.com: the clearest recent external-verification claims
What the Fair Dice page says
Backgammon.com says its rolls are generated on its servers with a cryptographically secure RNG. The page says the generator draws from the operating system’s entropy source, operates independently of game state and is generated separately for each roll. It also warns that random sequences can contain conspicuous streaks.

It is useful context for the type of generator being claimed, but it should not be read as a guarantee that a particular match is immune from software defects or operational mistakes.
GLI test reported for July 2026
The Fair Dice page says Gaming Laboratories International tested the RNG behind every roll in July 2026 and certified it to standards used in highly regulated jurisdictions. This is the strongest outside-testing claim in the material covered here. It remains a claim published by Backgammon.com; the underlying GLI certificate was not independently available in the cited material. Before relying on it for a regulated or institutional use case, ask for the actual certificate and its scope: the tested version, jurisdictions, test methods, deployment and expiry.
WBGF code review in August 2026
A separate Backgammon.com page says the World Backgammon Federation conducted due diligence on the dice code in August 2026 and concluded that the algorithm was sufficiently strong for generating backgammon dice. The page dates the certificate August 21, 2026 and says it remains valid for one year, through August 21, 2027.

This is a federation code review, not the same thing as the GLI RNG test. A code review can examine whether an algorithm appears appropriate and whether implementation choices are reasonable; it does not necessarily reproduce a laboratory battery of statistical tests or monitor every production server. Treat the two documents as complementary evidence with different scopes.

What this evidence does and does not answer
- It gives the most detailed recent account of an external test and a separate code review among the services compared.
- It does not prove that Backgammon.com is objectively the fairest app overall.
- It does not address whether opponents are human, whether bots are present or whether matchmaking is balanced.
- It does not turn an individual run of lucky or unlucky rolls into evidence of bias.
Backgammon Galaxy: a security claim plus profile statistics
Published RNG description
Backgammon Galaxy’s official support article, modified May 20, 2025, states: “We use a high-quality, cryptographically secure Random Number Generator (RNG) for all dice rolls.” This is a clear operator description of the intended generator.
The cited support material does not name an external laboratory, describe a public code review or provide a certification. That absence is not proof that no testing exists; it means the referenced explanation does not document it. Readers who require independently verifiable credentials should ask the service for the tester, report date, tested version and scope rather than treating the security wording as a substitute.
Profile dice statistics
Galaxy provides dice statistics on player profiles. Those statistics can help you examine long-run results for an account and are more useful than relying solely on memory of dramatic losses. They still depend on the app recording and presenting rolls correctly, and they do not expose the RNG’s internal state or independently certify its implementation.
Use profile statistics as an inspection aid: look at a sufficiently large sample, note the period and game population, and avoid drawing conclusions from a handful of matches. A small sample can show large differences by chance, particularly when you remember unusual games more vividly than ordinary ones.

Backgammon NJ: reproducibility and manual control
Seeded roll lists
NJ Software documents a different transparency model. Its documentation explains that an RNG seed determines a reproducible list of rolls, while the next-roll number identifies the position in that list. If you have the same seed and roll index, you can reproduce the sequence used for analysis.

This is valuable when you want to study a decision without arguing about whether a particular throw was regenerated. It lets two people work from the same positions and rolls. The documentation, however, does not establish that this seeded mechanism is the one governing every online multiplayer session or that an outside auditor has tested the service.
Replay and match-file tools
The help material describes replaying positions with the same rolls and saving or viewing match files. It also documents swapping the opening rolls so that a game can be replayed with the players’ rolls exchanged. That last feature is useful for separating the effect of move quality from the advantage of receiving particular opening throws.
These controls are strongest as analytical tools. They let you inspect a completed game, reproduce a position and compare alternate roll assignments. They are not equivalent to a certificate that an online server’s RNG is unbiased.
Printing and entering physical rolls
A separate developer page describes printing rolls in advance, entering manual physical rolls and comparing a match after exchanging rolls with the computer. Manual entry gives you a way to use real dice while retaining the app’s board and analysis functions. It also creates a clear boundary: the physical dice are outside the app’s digital RNG, so this mode does not validate the service’s online roll generator.

Randomness does not mean “evenly distributed in every short session.” Independent rolls can produce doubles in clusters, repeated numbers or long runs that feel designed. Backgammon.com explicitly acknowledges this phenomenon, and it applies to any genuinely random sequence.

- Small samples: A few dozen rolls are too little to distinguish ordinary variation from a persistent bias.
- Selective memory: Memorable losses are easier to recall than routine games in which rolls looked unremarkable.
- Confusing outcomes with rolls: A bad result can follow a fair throw because the position, cube decision or move choice changed the consequences.
A provider’s cryptographic label and a player’s impression answer different questions. The label concerns the generator design; the impression concerns a subjective experience. Neither alone is a statistical audit.
How to evaluate an app before trusting its dice
- Identify the evidence type. Is the statement an operator assurance, a player-visible record, a code review or a laboratory test?
- Check the date. Record when the page, report or certificate was issued and whether it has an expiry date. For Backgammon.com’s WBGF document, the stated period is August 21, 2026 through August 21, 2027.
- Check the scope. Determine whether the evidence covers the RNG algorithm, source code, production deployment, every roll, or only a particular version.
- Separate dice from other trust questions. RNG evidence says nothing by itself about bots, human opponents, matchmaking, account moderation or server availability.
- Prefer records you can inspect. Statistics, match files and reproducible seeds let you analyze games instead of relying on anecdotes.
- Ask for primary documentation when stakes are high. Request the actual certificate or report, including the tested build and validity period, rather than relying on a marketing summary.
A practical reproducibility workflow in Backgammon NJ
If your priority is examining rolls and decisions rather than finding a certification, the documented NJ tools support this workflow:
- Save or open the match file for the game you want to study.
- Use the documented seed and next-roll information to recreate the same roll sequence.
- Replay a position with the original rolls and examine the move choices.
- Swap the opening rolls and replay the game to see how the assignment of throws affected the result.
- For a controlled AI comparison, print rolls in advance or enter physical rolls manually, then compare the resulting match with the computer’s play.
The outcome is a reproducible analysis record. It is not an independent certification of the app’s online multiplayer RNG, so label conclusions accordingly.
Can physical precision dice make digital rolls more transparent?
Physical dice provide a manual alternative for practice or analysis. The official Backgammon Galaxy site lists “Elite” Precision Dice and other physical backgammon goods, but availability and inventory can change. Search for “precision backgammon dice” if you want a manual option, and verify the current listing yourself.
Physical dice do not make an app’s digital rolls more transparent. They simply move the random event outside the app. You still need to enter the results accurately, and manual dice introduce their own issues, such as handling, surface and physical bias.
Limits of the available comparison
The services do not publish evidence in a common format. Backgammon.com discusses a reported GLI test and a WBGF code review; Galaxy publishes an RNG assurance and profile statistics; NJ Software emphasizes seeds, replay and manual entry. Because the methods, dates and scopes differ, there is no defensible single fairness score for the three apps.
Feature availability can also change. Galaxy’s cited support article is dated May 20, 2025, while the Backgammon.com certification dates are in 2026. Recheck the current help pages, certificates and app versions before making a decision based on a particular feature or validity period.
