You cannot tell a USB-C cable’s charging, data, or video capabilities from its plug shape. Check the exact cable’s stated power rating, data rate, and display support separately, then confirm that the charger, host device, and display support the same features.
Why the USB-C plug does not tell you what a cable can do
USB-C identifies a connector system, not a guaranteed speed or feature set. As USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) puts it in its 2023 Type-C product and packaging guidelines, “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®.” USB-C also does not, by itself, promise USB Power Delivery (USB PD), fast data, or video.

A USB 2.0 Type-C-to-Type-C cable can support USB PD charging while carrying only USB 2.0 data. USB-IF says that cable type does not implement the TX/RX or Alt Mode signals needed for USB 3.2, USB4, or Alt Mode. So a cable can charge a device and transfer files, yet still be unsuitable for a high-speed connection or monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the cable’s markings and exact model
- Inspect the cable and original packaging. Look for a power rating, such as a USB-IF 60W or 240W symbol, and a data-rate marking such as USB 20Gbps or USB 40Gbps. Markings may appear on the cable, connector, tag, or box.
- Find the brand and exact model number. Check the manufacturer’s specification for that model. “USB-C cable” or “charging cable” in a product listing is not enough; look for separate statements about power, data protocol or rate, and video or display support.
- Verify certification claims when relevant. USB-IF’s compliance information and cable power-rating logo guidelines describe requirements for its compliance program and approved logo use. Those requirements do not mean every cable on sale is certified or marked. An unmarked cable may still have capabilities, but its markings alone do not establish them.
For an existing cable with no useful markings, identify the maker and exact model in its official documentation. If you cannot identify it or the specifications conflict, treat its capabilities as unknown rather than inferring them from its appearance or from a single successful connection.

How to tell whether a USB-C cable supports charging
Compare the cable’s stated power rating with the device’s requirements and the charger’s output. The cable rating is a ceiling, not a promise of the charging rate the device will receive: the charger, device, cable, and negotiated charging protocol all matter. USB PD is a separate capability from having a USB-C connector. USB-IF’s 2023 guidance describes USB PD implementations up to 240W; that is an upper limit, not a capability of every USB-C cable, charger, or device.
USB-IF’s labeling program calls for USB-C-to-USB-C cables to show a 60W or 240W power capability. These are program requirements, not a reason to conclude that every older or unmarked cable cannot charge. Check the exact model’s official rating when you need to know whether it meets a particular device’s requirements.

How to tell whether it supports data transfer
Check the cable’s data-rate or protocol specification, then compare it with the capabilities of the host port and the device. USB-IF’s 2023 product guidance gives up to 480 Mbps for USB 2.0 Type-C data operation; that figure applies to USB 2.0 operation, not to all USB-C cables. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable will not become a USB4 cable when connected to a USB4 port.
The connection uses the best capability shared by the host, device, and cable. USB-IF says all three need to support USB 3.2 or USB4 to achieve those respective capabilities; if a USB 2.0 cable is part of the connection, data remains at USB 2.0 speed. A power marking alone says nothing about data speed.

- High video resolution: 8K video. Single 8K@60 Hz, 4K@120 Hz or dual 4K@60 Hz resolution. Note: for video output, make sure that your USB-C device supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode. To reach 240 W charging, the device, charger and cable must all be EPR-capable.
- Enhanced durability: Tested to bend 95 degrees 5,000 times. Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) jacket for added flexibility and improved durability.
How to tell whether it supports video
Do not use the USB-C shape or a charging wattage symbol as evidence that a cable can connect to a monitor. Check the computer, tablet, or phone port for support of the required display mode or protocol; check the display input and any adapter or dock in the path; and confirm that the cable supports the relevant full-featured data and display path.
USB4 supports display traffic, but that does not mean every USB-C port or cable supports video. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable lacks Alt Mode signals. USB-IF’s documentation does not establish a universal visual test that identifies video support from a cable alone, so rely on the exact model’s specifications and the capabilities of both connected devices.

When to replace an unknown or unsuitable cable
If the cable cannot be identified, or its documented capabilities do not meet your needs, choose a replacement whose exact model specifies the required charging wattage, data rate, and display support. A USB4 40Gbps USB-C cable may be appropriate when those capabilities match your devices, but do not assume that every cable with that description supports every video mode. Check its length, current manufacturer specifications, and any certification claim before buying; choose only the power rating your device needs.
