A Bitcoin transaction that appears in the mempool has been broadcast, but it has not yet been confirmed in a block. Treat it as pending unless your business has deliberately chosen a zero-confirmation policy and can tolerate a conflicting or delayed payment. A payment processor can provide checkout, invoice tracking, and order-status signals; it does not make an unconfirmed on-chain transaction final.
What changes when you use a processor?
A managed payment processor typically hosts checkout, creates invoices, monitors payment activity, and sends status notifications to your store or order system. That can save you from building transaction detection and invoice workflows yourself, but you still need to interpret its statuses correctly and decide when an order can be fulfilled.

For example, BitPay advises merchants to retrieve the invoice’s authoritative status after receiving an IPN because the notification itself is not secure. It recommends fulfilling only when the invoice is Confirmed or Complete. See BitPay’s guidance on preventing fraud on unconfirmed payments and its API integration status documentation. A webhook or IPN is a prompt to check status, not proof of settlement by itself.
Provider status names and policies are provider-specific. BitPay, for example, says it requires six BTC confirmations before funds are credited to a merchant account; that is BitPay’s stated policy, not a universal merchant rule. BitPay explains its confirmation and crediting policy, and notes that confirmation timing is determined by the Bitcoin network rather than guaranteed by the processor.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What changes when you accept payment directly?
With direct wallet acceptance, your own software or operating procedure must connect a transaction to the correct order, distinguish mempool observation from block confirmation, and apply your fulfillment policy. You also need a plan for delayed transactions and conflicting spends. Bitcoin’s developer guide specifically identifies accepting unconfirmed payments as a situation that may require double-spend risk analysis, alongside high-value payments accepted before six or more confirmations. Bitcoin.org’s Payment Processing guide discusses these risks.
The trade-off is operational control: you are not relying on a managed processor’s invoice workflow, but you take responsibility for payment monitoring, order association, system reliability, and the consequences of your chosen acceptance threshold. A transaction visible in a node’s mempool is evidence of broadcast, not the same thing as inclusion in a block.

BTCPay Server: a self-hosted middle ground
BTCPay Server supplies invoice and checkout workflows while payments go to wallets controlled by the merchant. It is neither ad hoc wallet acceptance nor a fully managed hosted checkout: the merchant retains wallet control and operates the supporting infrastructure. The BTCPay Server documentation describes its self-hosted payment acceptance model, and the user guide explains invoices, confirmation policy, and fulfillment.
For integrations, BTCPay distinguishes InvoiceProcessing—a full payment has been observed in the mempool—from InvoiceSettled, which means the configured confirmation policy has been reached. Your order system should preserve that distinction rather than treating every observed payment as paid for fulfillment purposes. See the BTCPay eCommerce Integration Guide.

Self-hosting makes infrastructure and monitoring your responsibility. The BTCPay Wallet FAQ also discusses mempool configuration and double-spend detection behavior, so do not assume that every node or setup will expose identical signals.
Choose a fulfillment rule based on the downside
There is no confirmation count that is right for every merchant. Set policy by considering the transaction, the order, and what happens if payment fails to settle as expected.

- Works seamlessly with Android, iOS and desktop: Connect wirelessly or via USB-C to your phone or computer. Manage your crypto anywhere with our companion Trezor Suite app.
- Reversibility: A cancellable booking or revocable digital entitlement has a different exposure from a physical item that cannot be recovered once handed over.
- Value and incentive: The Bitcoin developer guide flags high-value or fraud-sensitive payments as cases where merchants should wait for at least six confirmations before treating payment as accepted. This is risk guidance for those cases, not a blanket requirement for every sale.
- Payment state: Decide explicitly what your system does when payment is merely seen in the mempool, has one or more confirmations, or reaches a provider-defined state such as credited or complete.
- Operational capacity: A managed provider reduces the amount of monitoring software you must build; self-hosting gives you more control but requires reliable infrastructure and attention to alerts and order-state handling.
BitPay warns that fulfilling while an invoice is only in its Paid state increases double-spend risk. Its recommendation to wait for Confirmed or Complete is the provider’s guidance for its workflow; merchants should not assume that the same status labels or loss terms apply elsewhere. Read BitPay’s fulfillment and IPN guidance.

Lightning is a different payment route, not an on-chain transaction waiting at zero confirmations. BTCPay describes Lightning payments as settling without on-chain confirmations. If your checkout offers both routes, implement and communicate their payment states separately rather than applying the on-chain confirmation rule to Lightning. See the BTCPay Server user guide.

A practical order-state policy
- Record payment as pending when it is broadcast. Do not mark an order fulfilled merely because a transaction appears in the mempool.
- Use the authoritative status source. With a processor, fetch the invoice status after its notification; with a self-hosted or direct setup, consult your payment-monitoring system’s confirmation information.
- Define the transition that permits fulfillment. Configure it around the provider’s documented states or your own confirmation and risk policy, taking order reversibility and value into account.
- Handle exceptions deliberately. Decide how your team responds to a transaction that remains unconfirmed, is replaced or conflicts with another spend, or does not reach the required state.
- Test the integration against each payment state. Confirm that mempool-seen, confirming, and settled or complete events cannot accidentally trigger the same fulfillment action.
These steps reduce avoidable workflow mistakes, but no processor or integration should be assumed to eliminate double-spend exposure or guarantee a particular confirmation time. The sources cited here do not establish which party bears losses from conflicting spends across providers; check the terms and implementation details for the service you actually use.
