To find out whether a third-party cordless tool works with your Makita battery, check the tool maker’s documentation for the exact battery platform and model. A battery that slides into the tool—or carries a matching voltage label—is not proof of compatibility. If the manufacturer does not confirm the combination, treat it as unverified and do not test it as a substitute for confirmation.
What to check before using the battery
Record the identifiers for the complete setup. Battery capacity alone is not enough: the platform and model matter, as do any adapter and its intended use.

- The tool’s brand and full model number, from its label or manual.
- The battery platform—CXT, LXT, or XGT—and the full model number printed on the battery.
- The adapter’s exact model number, if one is involved.
Verify the exact combination in the tool maker’s documentation
- Open the tool manufacturer’s manual, official product page, or compatibility list.
- Look for the battery platform and model you have, along with the tool’s full model number.
- If an adapter is required, confirm that the manufacturer names that adapter for that tool and use case. A matching connector shape is not enough.
- If the documentation is silent, ask the tool manufacturer to confirm the exact tool, battery, and adapter combination. Until it does, compatibility is unverified.
Keep physical fit separate from electrical, electronic, and operating compatibility. A tool may accept a battery mechanically without its maker specifying that the battery will operate properly with it.

What Makita’s platform guidance does—and does not—establish
Makita U.S.A.’s battery FAQ says its batteries are compatible within their respective Makita platforms. Its stated boundaries are CXT 12V max batteries with CXT products; LXT 18V batteries with LXT products, including 36V (18V X2) products; and XGT 40V max batteries with XGT products, including 80V (40V max X2) products.

Those are Makita-platform claims, not certification of a third-party tool. They do not establish that a battery will work in another brand’s product, even if the voltage appears to match.
Why adapters need model-specific confirmation
An adapter is not a general compatibility guarantee. Makita’s product information for the SK106GDZ laser describes using an 18V LXT battery as an alternate power source through the Power Source Adapter ADP05 and adapter cord, sold separately. That is a documented accessory path for that named Makita product—not evidence that a generic adapter works with an arbitrary third-party tool.

Charging is a different use case. Makita’s XGT system page describes the ADP10 adapter with the DC40RA charger for rapid-charging 18V LXT batteries. This charger-and-battery arrangement does not make an XGT battery compatible with an LXT tool, or vice versa.

Understand Makita’s battery warning in context
Makita says genuine lithium-ion batteries use internal circuitry to monitor battery conditions when used with Makita tools and chargers, and warns that non-genuine or altered batteries may defeat electronic communication. For non-genuine or altered batteries used with Makita tools, Makita warns of possible warranty and UL/CSA approval consequences, as well as bursting, fire, injury, property damage, and unknown performance. Its genuine-parts page says it does not approve non-genuine lithium-ion batteries marketed for use in Makita cordless tools.

These are Makita’s stated positions about batteries used with its tools and chargers. They do not establish that every third-party tool used with a genuine Makita battery will fail or is unsafe. Nor does using a genuine battery by itself prove that a third-party tool is compatible.

If the tool maker does not name your battery model or confirm the exact combination, do not buy an adapter or try the setup on the assumption that it will work. Ask the tool maker for a clear confirmation covering the tool model, battery model, and adapter, if applicable. Without those details, compatibility cannot be determined.
